Join the Angels for the best Congress experience

Our Camp and our Chaos Communication Congress would not be possible without the great work of our volunteers, called Angels. Your engagement as an Angel is the perfect opportunity to become a part of Congress and make it even more amazing for everyone involved. Apart from that, volunteering is a great chance to meet new people.

What makes being an Angel so special, you may wonder? Let us answer this with another question: Are you able to run an event with thousands of visitors, creative minds, eager to discuss, explore and most of all: create?

Join the Angels and find out! Doing so, you will join a community as old as the Congress itself. Since the very first Congress in 1984, everything is done by volunteers, later called ‘Angels’. In return, the Angels get some quiet space in the famous ‘Heaven’ including food and drink supply, a Hackcenter exclusively for Angels, and the good feeling of helping out and being part of the Congress experience. If you love crafting and do some construction work we would love if you show up for buildup.

We want to plan the right amount of food and drinks for our build up Angels. Therefore it would be great if you signup right now under engelsystem.de and tell us when you arrive. We will use this to inform you of important dates and the setup schedule. In the near future you can also sign up for your favourite shifts, tasks, and times in the Engelsystem.

Many of the tasks do not need any knowledge besides showing up on time but are nonetheless vital for the Congress. Other tasks may need an introduction with which you will be provided in time at the Congress. Please read the Angel wiki page for basic information. If you are not sure about the whole Angel-stuff or have any questions, just show up in Heaven and ask. Heaven will also announce tasks to be done and short notice tasks. For all new angels out there, there will be special introduction meetings for you the first few days of Congress, in addition to the daily general angel meetings.

So if you have two or more hours to spare, sign up for a shift! We will be waiting for you in Heaven! If you don’t want to participate in making the Congress work, at least take your time and thank at least three Angels every day to show your gratitude. :)

Werde ein Engel!

Das Camp und auch der Congress würden ohne die Hilfe unserer ehrenamtlichen Helfer, den Engeln, nicht möglich sein. Auf dem Congress zu “engeln” ist die perfekte Gelegenheit, die Veranstaltung mitzugestalten und neue Leute kennen zu lernen.

Was macht das Engeln so besonders? Das lässt sich am besten mit einer Gegenfrage beantworten: Bist du bereit, ein Event mit tausenden von Besuchern, die entdecken, diskutieren, hacken und vor allem erschaffen wollen, am Laufen zu halten?

Werde ein Engel und finde es heraus! Engel sind eine großartige Community, so alt wie der Congress. Seit dem ersten Chaos Communication Congress 1984 wird jede Veranstaltung von Freiwilligen organisiert und durchgeführt. Als kleines Dankeschön haben Engel Zutritt zu einem speziellen Rückzugsort, dem berühmten Himmel. Dort gibt es auch Getränke, etwas zu Essen, ein Hackcenter nur für Engel und das gute Gefühl, in einer coolen Gemeinschaft eine großartige Veranstaltung gewuppt zu haben.

Wir brauchen tatkräftige Unterstützung. Du bist gerne gesehen, es gibt sehr viel zu tun. Wir wollen die richtige Menge Essen und Getränke für unsere Aufbau-Engel planen. Darum registriert euch bitte bald unter engelsystem.de und gebt an, wann ihr ankommt. Im Engelsystem findet ihr aktuelle Informationen und Zeitpläne für den Aufbau und die Veranstaltung. Ab demnächst könnt ihr euch auch für Schichten, Aufgaben und Zeiten im Engelsystem eintragen.

Viele der Aufgaben erfordern kein besonderes Wissen, nur pünktliches Erscheinen, aber sind dennoch wichtig für den Congress. Für andere Aufgaben gibt es eine Einführung, die ihr auf dem Congress vorher mitmachen könnt. Bitte lest die Engel-Wikiseite für grundlegende Informationen. Wenn du dir unsicher bist, oder Fragen zu den Engeln hast, und dich fragst, wie du ein Engel werden kannst, komme doch einfach in den Himmel. Wir erklären dir gerne, wie alles funktioniert. Weiterhin wird es tägliche Engel-Meetings geben auf denen die wichtigsten Sachen besprochen werden. Für Interessierte und Neu-Engel wird es auch in den ersten Tagen Einführungs-Meetings geben. Wann die Engelmeetings stattfinden, erfährst du im Himmel oder direkt im Engelsystem.

Wenn du also 2-3 Stunden Zeit hast und helfen willst, diese Veranstaltung so grandios werden zu lassen wie die bisherigen, melde dich einfach im Himmel. Wir freuen uns auf dich! Wenn du nicht beim Congress helfen willst, nimm dir doch stattdessen Zeit und danke mindestens drei Engeln jeden Tag, um deine Dankbarkeit zu zeigen. :)

If you are multilingual and fluent in German and English, please consider joining the translation team.

We interpret ALL THE talks in the four main halls live. German talks are interpreted into English, and vice versa. Our work is transmitted via the internal phone network, streamed to the Internet, and recordings are published on CCC sites and YouTube. Also, this year we are expanding: for the two large halls (Saal 1 & 2) we have a second translations channel that will be broadcast in the same way.

That is a lot of stuff to translate, and for that we need YOU. At Saal 1 & 2, you have the chance to contribute in an even more special way if you can interpret into another interesting language (from English or German). The first language we would like to add so far is French, but if your interest is elsewhere just let us know – especially if you can bring a few interpreters for the same target language along.

Don’t be shy. If you are uncertain whether you’re good enough, chances are that you’ll do just fine. If we believe you might be struggling, we will talk it over, no harm done.

Simply send an email to “translate-subscribe(at)lists.ccc.de” and write a quick intro to the mailing list after you’ve completed subscribing. Also sign up as a translation angel at the Engelsystem a few days before 33C3.

Wenn du mehrsprachig bist und flüssig in Deutsch und Englisch, dann würden wir dich gerne in unserem Übersetzungsteam begrüßen.

Wir dolmetschen ALLE Talks in den vier Sälen live. Deutsche Talks werden nach Englisch übersetzt und umgekehrt. Unsere Arbeit wird über das interne Telefonnetz übertragen, ins Internet gestreamt, und Aufzeichnungen werden auf CCC-Servern sowie auf YouTube veröffentlicht. Und dieses Jahr gibt es eine Erweiterung: in den zwei großen Sälen (Saal 1 und 2) haben wir einen zweiten Übersetzungskanal, der auf die gleiche Weise verbreitet wird.

Es gibt also viel zu übersetzen, und dafür brauchen wir DICH. In Saal 1 und 2 hast du die Gelegenheit, einen ganz besonderen Beitrag zu leisten, wenn du in eine andere interessante Sprache übersetzen kannst (von Englisch oder Deutsch). Die erste Sprache, die wir momentan dazunehmen wollen, ist Französisch, aber wenn du andere Interessen hast, sag einfach Bescheid – besonders dann, wenn du einige Dolmetscher·innen für die gleiche Zielsprache mitbringen kannst.

Trau dich. Wenn du dich fragst, ob du gut genug bist, wirst du wahrscheinlich gut klarkommen. Wenn wir glauben, dass du Schwierigkeiten hast, dann reden wir darüber, aber das ist nicht schlimm.

Schicke einfach eine E-Mail an „translate-subscribe(at)lists.ccc.de“ und schreibe eine kurze Vorstellungsmail an die Liste, wenn du fertig eingetragen bist. Registriere dich außerdem als Übersetzungsengel im Engelsystem einige Tage vor dem 33C3.

Also, ergreife bitte diese Chance und hilf uns, C3 für ein noch größeres internationales Publikum zugänglich zu machen.

A commonly used phrase by software developers to indicate that the bug reported by a user is not repeatable on their machine, and will therefore receive no more attention. Usually connotes a dismissive approach, where anything that is not visible immediately to the developer is „someone else’s problem“ and is therefore not worth fixing.

Like no other, the year 2016 pointed out how well „works for me“ works for us.
It does not. Mutual hate, envy, insensibility and exclusion have driven us apart.

Feeling isolated and threatened, we turn further against each other, take less care of each other and worry even more about ourselves. And yet, we are never alone: Excessive surveillance is now politically normalized, if not for all then at least for those who are different, intractable, foreign.

Let’s break this vicious circle.
Let’s get together and live our utopia.
Let’s strive for something that works for all of us.

And let’s fight those, who will not let us!

The Call-For-Participation to submit a talk for the main halls is long over – but congress wouldn’t be congress if there weren’t many more options to get on a stage to tell a crowd of curious listeners what you have to say!

Lightning Talks:

These fast paced sessions are perfect for pitching new software or hardware projects, exploits, creative pranks or strange ideas you need to get out to a global audience. Even if you don’t have an awesome idea or project to share, a Lightning Talk is perfect for pitching your Assembly, your workshop or even a longer talk you’ll give as a Self-Organized Session.

Did you think that the thrill of sharing your ideas in front of a huge audience at a C3 was something you’d never experience? Do you work on a cool project and want to get the word out? Was your talk one of the hundreds that got rejected? Did you come up with an awesome hack that you need to share? Go ahead and enter your Lightning Talk now!

Self-Organized Session:

Self-Organized Sessions used to be called “workshops”, but we changed the name to include everything – even if it’s not hands-on or about making things – as long as it’s done by you for all of us!

It doesn’t matter whether you want to give an introduction to your favorite programming language or want to make new friends with similar interests, if you want to screen a movie or if you want to organize a follow-up from a presentation on the big stages: All you have to do is use the wiki to create a Self-Organized Session and choose a free space and time to get going!

As usual both options come with the first-come-first-serve principle, please check the calendar carefully to see what rooms and slots are still available.

33C3 halfnarp: Diese Vorträge funktionieren bei uns!

Voller Stolz präsentiert das 33C3-Content-Team die Auswahl der Vorträge für den 33. Chaos Communication Congress. In harter Arbeit haben unsere fünf Track-Teams die besten 150 aus rund 500 Vortrags-Einreichungen für das beste Vortragsprogramm ausgewählt, das wir Euch an den vier Tagen des 33C3 in sechs Tracks anbieten wollen.

Um diese Vorträge zu einem möglichst schmerzarmen Fahrplan zusammenzuschnüren, brauchen wir Eure Hilfe! Tanzt den halfnarp unter https://halfnarp.events.ccc.de/ und sagt uns, welche Vorträge Euch interessieren, und im Tausch versuchen wir, sie nicht gleichzeitig stattfinden zu lassen. Klickt auf die Vorträge, klickt auf Submit, den Rest machen wir! Ihr könnt Euch jederzeit umentscheiden und Eure Auswahl sogar mit Euren Freunden teilen. (Momentan fehlen noch ca. 15 Vorträge, die von den Einreichern noch nicht bestätigt wurden: Guckt mal in Eure Spam-Ordner. ;)

Ihr werdet bemerkt haben, dass es einen neuen „Space“-Track gibt. Wir finden nämlich das Interesse an europäischer Raumfahrt durchaus noch ausbaufähig!

Das Interesse, auf dem Congress vorzutragen, hat uns überwältigt, vor allem, wenn man bedenkt, dass kein Vortragender ein Honorar erhält und viele sich sogar ihre Karten selber kaufen. Da naturbedingt die überwiegende Mehrheit der Vortragseinreichungen abgelehnt werden musste, heißt das aber nicht, dass deren Themen für die Teilnehmer nicht interessant wären. Daher laden wir Euch ganz herzlich ein, Eure Ideen, Projekte und Ausarbeitungen in einem Lightning Talk vorzustellen, eine Assembly anzulegen und dort mit Gleichgesinnten zusammenzukommen oder Euch gar in einem Workshop Eure Hände gemeinsam schmutzig zu machen.

33C3 halfnarp: The talks that ‚work for us‘

The 33C3 content committee is proud to announce a lecture selection that ‚works for us‘. Our five hard-working 33C3 track teams have hand-picked a set of around 150 excellent lectures to be formed into the best four day, six track programme possible.

Having to select talks from an impressive lot of more than 500 submissions was a hard and sometimes frustrating task. But we have been amazed by the overwhelming interest in volunteering to present at 33C3. We’re thrilled to see that support and enthusiasm to contribute to this year’s event is as high as it ever been. Some speakers even refuse to accept a free ticket!

With this post, we want to do three things: Whet your appetite for our programme, ask for your help in putting together a collision-free schedule, and call for your workshops and self-organized sessions.

First, we present: The halfnarp https://halfnarp.events.ccc.de/.

In the halfnarp, you’ll find a list of all re-confirmed talks for each track (note: around 15 lectures are not yet re-confirmed, if you’re a speaker, please check your spam folder ;). You might notice that we offer a new track ‚Space‘, simply because we think all hackers should absolutely make space ‚work for them‘.

Second, we ask that you to help us put together a collision-free schedule that ‚works for you‘:

1. Select all lectures you would like to attend.
2. Press submit.
3. That’s it, there’s no step three. We’ll do the rest.

You can modify your choice at any time (don’t forget to press Submit again), or share it with your friends.

Third: The vast majority of submissions did not make it into the curated lecture programme. But that does not mean they wouldn’t be interesting to the crowd at 33C3. We invite you to present your ideas in lightning talks, gather in your assemblies or even get hands-on with a self organized session.

Es ist wieder soweit – der 33C3 steht vor der Tür, und die Chaospatinnen werden auch dieses Jahr wieder Menschen willkommen heißen, die zum ersten Mal den Congress besuchen. Wir freuen uns auf Euch und darauf, Euch einen guten Start zu ermöglichen!

Für alle Menschen, die zum ersten Mal den Congress besuchen:

Du wolltest schon immer mal am Chaos Communication Congress teilnehmen, weißt aber nicht, an wen Du Dich wenden kannst oder hast Dich bisher noch nicht so richtig getraut? Oder hast Du das Gefühl, dass Du eigentlich gar keine richtige Hackerin bist und deswegen nicht auf den Kongress passt? Hattest Du bestimmt wenig Kontakt zur Welt der Hacker und Technologie? Gibt es bestimmte Hürden für Dich, welche Dir die Teilnahme erschweren?

Aber Du interessierst Dich für Computer, Technik, Hacken oder Netzpolitik? Du würdest gerne den Vorträgen lauschen und lernen, wie man lötet, Roboter baut, programmiert, verschlüsselt oder Schlösser knackt?

Dann fühl Dich herzlich willkommen auf dem Chaos Communication Congress und bei den Chaospatinnen!

Du bist hier genau richtig. Wir möchten Dich ermutigen, dieses Jahr am 33C3 teilzunehmen, und wollen Dir dabei helfen, einen spannenden und schönen Aufenthalt zu haben. Als „Chaospatenkind“ bekommst Du einen Paten oder eine Patin und eine Gruppe, die zu Dir passt. Die Paten sind im Vorfeld für Eure Fragen da, heißen Euch am ersten Tag willkommen und erkunden mit Euch das Gelände. Gemeinsam finden wir raus, wo es für Dich interessante Workshops und Talks gibt. Auch im Vorfeld sind wir Ansprechpartnerinnen für Deine Fragen, Sorgen, Bedürfnisse oder Wünsche.

Wie geht das?

Melde Dich bis zum 10. Dezember bei uns an, indem Du eine Mail mit ein paar Infos über Dich an unsere E-Mail-Adresse chaospatinnen at lists punkt ccc punkt de schreibst. Schreib uns aber bitte so früh wie möglich. Verrate uns, wofür Du Dich interessierst und wieso Du dieses Jahr zum ersten Mal auf den Congress kommen willst. So können wir für Dich einen passenden Paten oder eine passende Patin suchen, die Dich dann bald kontaktieren wird.

Warum machen wir das?

Wir selbst haben seit 1, 2, 10 oder 30 Jahren immer wieder eine großartige Zeit auf dem Congress. Wir wissen aber aus eigener Erfahrung, wie schwierig der erste Schritt sein kann. Eine große Hacker-Konferenz, passe ich da überhaupt hin? Aber ist der erste Schritt getan, warten tolle Menschen und die Gelegenheit, unheimlich viel zu lernen auf Dich. Aber nicht nur Ihr könnt etwas Neues auf dem Kongress lernen. Auch für die vorhandene Community ist es wichtig, immer wieder ihre Tore für neue Perspektiven und Menschen zu öffnen und von denen dazuzulernen. Deswegen wollen wir mit den Chaospatinnen auch solche ermutigen, die sich von alleine nicht getraut hätten.

Für Paten und Patinnen:

Natürlich suchen wir auch dieses Jahr wieder tatkräftige Unterstützung von netten, erfahrenen und zuverlässigen Paten und Patinnen. Wenn Du Lust hast, Dich einer Gruppe von Neulingen anzunehmen und sie zu betreuen, dann melde Dich bei uns per Mail an chaospatinnen at lists punkt ccc punkt de.
Erzähle uns etwas über Dich und womit Du Dich gut auskennst, damit wir passende Patenkinder für Dich suchen können.

It is that time of the year again – 33C3 is approaching and the Chaosmentors are getting ready to support new visitors during their first Congress experience.

For those who visit the Congress for the first time:

You always wanted to visit Chaos Communication Congress but worry about getting the best out of the experience? You are interested in computers, technology, hacking, privacy, free speech and perhaps just need pointing in the right direction?

We are the „Chaospatinnen“ (chaos mentors) and we welcome you to the Chaos Communication Congress. We encourage you to participate in 33C3 this year and we will do our upmost to help you to have an exciting, enjoyable and most of all memorable congress. As a „Chaospatenkind“ (chaos mentee) you’ll have a mentor and a group that suits you. Mentors are available in advance of the congress for your questions, welcome you on the first day and explore congress with you. Together, we will find talks and workshops that interest you as well as answer any questions or concerns ahead of congress.

How does it work?

Signup by the 10th December by emailing us with a little about yourself to our email-address chaospatinnen at lists dot ccc dot de. Please write to us as early as possible and tell us what you are interested in and why you want to come to the Congress for the first time. With this information, we can find you a suitable mentor, who will then contact you before congress.

Why do we do this?

We have always had a great time at the Congress for 1, 2, 10 or 30 years. But we know from our own experience how difficult the first step can be. However, once the first step is taken, great people, knowledge and unforgettable experiences await you. But it’s not only you who will learn something new, it’s also important for the existing community to open doors to new people and perspectives year after year. Many of the Chaospatinnen took this first step just like you are about to – So what are you waiting for? Get in touch!

Chaos Mentors Assembly

The Chaos Communication Congress lives off your participation and engagement. It is an event for the community by the community. In the long and colorful tradition of utter chaos, we foster decentralization and self-organization. In an attempt to offer some orientation and coordination, we keep a wiki.

The wiki works for you (and everyone else, we hope!) to find information about congress, but its main purpose is enabling you to contribute and make congress work for everyone.

The 33c3 Wiki is now online, you can enter Assemblies and share useful information.
(Registration for self-organized sessions will open in some time)

If you just want to have a look around for now, the FAQ page is a good entry point.
Also, the startpage lists and links to lots of relevant info.

We are trying to organize each C3-Conference as decentralized as possible, so this is one of the multiple bits where everyone can participate and contribute. Please go ahead, it’s a wiki!
