[edit] NEWS UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
Bucket (of booze, duh) party at Camp Anaconda. Enjoy our booze and fine visual entertainment. From 2200h Saturday until whenever the booze runs out.
All the tents and equipment has to go as it costs more to take back to the (dis?)United States than it's worth. Campers are invited to come and pick over the material wealth of the Great Satan in exchange for (generous please!)donations on Sunday.
- Technically speaking we're not allowed to sell anything (customs!) so everything is open to negotiation. Try us.
[edit] Introduction
This is the camp housing US and EU citizens and friends who have signed up for the Hacker Foundation's Hackers on a Plane event.
The name of our camp is slightly controversial. While Camp Anaconda is the name for the primary logistics base for the US Armed Forces in Iraq, its primarily a reference continuing in the theme of "Snakes on a Plane", where we derived the name for our travel project, "Hackers on a Plane". We are fully poking fun at ourselves and people who take things a bit too seriously.
Our goal is to introduce US hackers to the European hacker scene, make friends and learn more about the culture that leads to all the cool projects we see coming out of Europe!
[edit] What is Hackers on a Plane?
Hackers on a Plane is a Hacker Foundation project designed to bring US hackers in closer contact with their European counterparts and facilitate exchange between the European and US hacker cultures.
Nearly 40 participants paid $1,337.00 (or €1,337.00) to take part in this historic event.
The charter flight from Düsseldorf, departing at 16:00h is scheduled to land at the camp at 18:00h.
The charter flight didn't happen but the Hackers on a Plane became Hackers on a Bus and drove approximately 10 hours from Düsseldorf to Finowfurt. An extensive effort was conducted to raise over 12 tents in a manner that even Halliburton would envy. (It was dark out, okay?)
Other feats of historic significance performed on this landmark trip included the first (that we know of) setup and use of a wireless access point on an international flight at 39,000 feet. On this network we had dhcp, web serving, streaming video (sort of), and, of course, IRC on a Plane!
[edit] What are you doing for c-base?
12 HoAP passengers have generously donated their seat on the charter flight to Camp in order to help save c-base. We encourage you to get involved and donate what you can to support Berlin's independently funded hacker culture!
You can buy a ticket and land directly at the camp! Tickets on the HoAP charter flight from Dusseldorf to the airport next to camp will go on sale starting Monday, July 30 at 12:00h CET
[edit] Camp Anaconda Village Specifications
In continuing with our snake theme (and to provide the distribution of 110V power more conveniently), Camp Anaconda will be laid out as a "snake ready to pounce".
The dimensions of the camp are 35 meters by 20 meters.
Personal tents will be pitched along the edge of the hotel between tents "Yankee" and "Zulu"
[edit] Tents
10 Dome Tents: 2006 Model SwissGear Elite Series dome tents with an approximate diameter of 4.3 meters and a floor area of 14 square meters. Camp citizens will be staying in these tents, 4 persons each. (Tents ABCDEFGIYZ)
2 Q Tents: 2006 Model SwissGear Elite Series cottage tents. (Tents Q1, Q2)
1 HOTEL Tent: 12m x 6m tent provided by the CCC organizers and sponsored ToorCon (Tent HOTEL). Parties, Workshops, Contests and HoAP meals will happen here.
Personal Tents: Personal tents of varying sizes may be pitched on the opposite side of HOTEL.
[edit] Power
We are running on the assumption that the camp will provide 230 V/50 hz power to the tent.
That being said, Camp Anaconda will be providing 110V feeds from Q2 to all tents. Each feed will come with its own power strip attached to the end of it.
Do not allow your power connection to be exposed to the elements! There should be only unexposed wire running throughout Camp Anaconda
[edit] What kinds of things will I be able to plug in?
For laptops, cell phones and PDAs, you should be fine. The thing to look for on the power adapter is "INPUT: 100-240VAC ~ 50/60HZ". This basically means you can plug it into any outlet in the EU if you can get the prongs to fit. If you have a question on this, e-mail campanacaonda@hackerfoundation.org
[edit] What kinds of things will I not be able to plug in?
Things that require 60 Hz power, like:
- Anything with an AC powered electric motor. (Fans, clocks, etc.)
- Anything that relies on a 60Hz timebase (electric clocks). You'll get minutes that are only 50 seconds long.
- Desktop computers (if you're bringing something like this overseas, then you can go leave it at the hackcenter)
- Stereo equipment
[edit] What happened to the Geodesic tents?
Nick Farr mistook them for in&out burgers and ate them.
[edit] What services will Camp Anaconda offer?
[edit] T-Shirts
Come by and take advantage of the schwag! We will have various Hacker Foundation shirts available.
[edit] Free Services
- On-Site Language translation, English to/from:
- German
- French
- Spanish
- Polish
- Russian
- 220/110 voltage conversion
- Dazed and/or Confused US Citizen handling
- Liquor, Mate and Good times, sponsored by ToorCon!
[edit] Transportation Services
We will have three rented cars on site. Transportation, depending on need, will be offered.
This does not mean we are your personal taxi service. If you are there when we head into Berlin or Town, or are at the train station when we happen to be in town you're welcome to ride with us.
[edit] So, you're the AMERICAN embassy?
We say that only because we're US hackers interested in building relationships with other hacker cultures throughout the world.
[edit] Will you be offering any official consulate services?
No. We urge you to contact the US Embassy in Berlin. US Consular Services are located here, an easy train ride from camp. We will be happy to put you in contact with them in the event of an emergency.
[edit] I have a lost American and I don't know what to do with them.
We will gladly exchange a liter of non-US beer or a bottle of Club Mate for any lost Americans safely delivered to Camp Anaconda. (One liter per unique lost American.)
[edit] FAQ

Building the Global Hacker Community Breakfast
Believe it or not, Hackers on a Plane and Camp Anaconda have a purpose. The US Hacker Foundation is working on building its Hackerspace Action Community in the US and decided to bring almost 40 hackers from the US to show them Europe's more well developed network of Hackerspaces. HF will present the outcomes of the Defcon Prototype Hacker Space and seek input from those who have already built other hackerspaces. Come join us for breakfast as we kick off the global hackerspace movement! | ||
