After r0ket launching into the world of electronic name badges four years ago, this year we bring you rad1o.
We enjoyed seeing r0ket being used for all sorts of purposes, even years after camp, still in use with old and new ideas. With rad1o we want to go one step further and give you a Toy and Tool that will stay a huge, useful playground after camp.
Inspired by the HackRF, rad1o wants to give you access to the world of Software Defined Radio – the generation and reception of electromagnetic waves, controlled by software rather than analogue technology. Where previously large chunks of money had to be invested in analogue hardware, SDR can save quite some money and every camp visitor can become an SDR hacker. And if that’s not what you’re planning or looking forward to, please hand on the opportunity to someone else, e.g. in your local Hackerspace.
With the rad1o transceiver you can send and receive between approximately 50/100 and 4000 MHz. Have a look what is going on in that spectrum (for example here)
If you got your hands on the HackRF, it’s a quick switch to rad1o. The software is compatible. Exact specs will be available soon on the rad1o website:

Last camp we already were impressed by the large variety of projects using the name badge — but since we chose to surprise you with the first badge some projects were lacking the needed hardware (especially the micro-USB cables…).
This time we want an even larger variety at camp! We tested our first prototype and we are optimistic that they can do everything we want to offer. While we now spend the remaining time until camp moving thousands of components across the globe* and placing them onto PCBs, the challenge for you is to find things to do with rad1o! (*please, please wait a few more weeks if you fancy a few hundred of the components on our part list in your electronics lab)

You want to make your village something special? Maybe some of the objects you brought can be controlled via rad1o. Or you have some SDR riddles to solve with rad1o. Or you’ll use rad1o for transmitting… radio? or …
For more fun and games with rad1o, we recommend to definitely bring a micro USB cable, and a external power bank will also come in handy. Additionally an external antenna might come in handy, see the wiki for Details. For more blinking lights we added space for LEDs (WS2812B LEDs). We probably don’t need to mention the opportunity for more crazy cases for the badge, right? :) (find CAD data in the Wiki, too).
BTW: If you like listening to the rad1o, you’ll need headphones (3.5mm standard mono headphones/microphone) or a 4-pin Headset with Microphone (like the Iphone Standard).

Nach dem r0ketstart in die Welt der elektronischen Namensschilder vor vier Jahren gibt es dieses Jahr für alle Teilnehmer des Camps ein rad1o.
Es war toll zu sehen wie auch Jahre nach dem letzten Camp 2011 die r0ket-Badges für alle möglichen Zwecke eingesetzt wurden (und werden). Mit dem rad1o wollen wir diesen Anspruch weiterverfolgen und euch ein Gadget bieten, welches auch lange nach dem Camp jede Menge Hackvalue zur nachhaltigen Weiterverwendung haben wird.
Inspiriert vom HackRF will rad1o euch den Einstieg in die Welt der Software-Defined-Radios schmackhaft machen, insbesondere für diejenigen, die mit SDR – also dem Erzeugen und dem Empfangen elektromagnetischer Wellen mit den Möglichkeiten moderner Software – bislang noch nicht viel zu tun hatten.
Wo bisher in komplexe Analogtechnik investiert werden musste, hat mit SDR Geräten viel mehr Möglichkeiten, auch sehr komplexe Kommunikationsverfahren können mit geringem Aufwand realisiert werden. Während und nach dem Camp können alle zum SDR Hacker werden. Und wer das nicht vorhat, kann Softwareprojekte von anderen für das rad1o einfach nur nutzen, es auch als ARM Microcontroller Experimentierboard nutzen, oder diese Möglichkeit an andere – z.B. im lokalen Hackerspace – weitergeben.
Mit dem rad1o Transceiver kann zwischen ca. 50/100 bis 4000 MHz gesendet und empfangen werden. Zum Beispiel hier könnt ihr einen Blick ein typisches SDR Spektrum werfen und sehen was da so los sein kann. Falls ihr schonmal etwas mit dem HackRF experimentiert habt, kann das rad1o einfach mit einer angepassten HackRF Firmware benutzen. Genaue Spezifikationen fehlen hier noch, diese werden noch vor dem Camp vom rad1o Team veröffentlicht.

Auf dem letzten Camp war die Vielfalt der Projekte für die r0ket, die auf dem Camp entstanden sind, bereits beeindruckend — aber weil wir euch mit dem ersten Badge überrascht haben mangelte es für manche Projekte an der nötigen Hardware (insbesondere an Micro-USB Kabeln…).
Diesmal wollen wir noch mehr Vielfalt auf dem Camp! Wir haben unsere ersten Prototypen getestet und sind zuversichtlich, dass sie alles koennen was wir euch bieten wollen. Waehrend wir die naechsten Wochen mit aller Kraft tausende Teile durch die Welt bewegen* und für euch auf Platinen platzieren, seid ihr jetzt gefordert euch etwas fuer das rad1o badge einfallen zu lassen! (*bitte bitte haltet euch noch ein paar Wochen zurueck wenn ihr gerade ein paar tausend Teile aus unserer Bestueckungsliste in eure Elektronikwerkstatt bestellen wollt o.o)

Ihr wollt euer Village zu etwas besonderem machen? Vielleicht lassen sich ein paar Objekte die ihr mitgebracht habt, mit dem rad1o steuern. Oder euch fallen ein paar SDR Raetsel ein, die sich mit dem rad1o loesen lassen. Oder ihr macht… radio :) oder…
Fuer mehr Spaß mit dem rad1o empfehlen wir unbedingt ein micro USB-Kabel mitzubringen, eine Power Bank für mehr mobilen rad1o Spaß ist auch sehr empfehlenswert. Außerdem koennte eine externe Antenne und eine SMA Buchse (Spec, siehe Wiki) nuetzlich sein. Für mehr Blinkenspaß haben wir Bestückungsmöglichkeiten für WS2812bLEDs vorgesehen. Die Moeglichkeit, verrueckte Gehaeuse fuer das Badge zu basteln brauchen wir wahrscheinlich nicht extra zu erwaehnen, oder? :) (CAD Daten im Wiki)
Wer gerne rad1o hoert, braucht uebrigens Kopfhoerer (3.5mm standard Stereo Stecker) oder ein 4 poliges Headset mit Mikrofon (entspricht Iphone Standard).
