A culinary journey through the villages of the Camp
Villages are a big part of the Camp experience. These places are more than just a bunch of tents put up together – here people tend to camp together under a common theme. While there are thematic villages, there are also villages with a regional focus.
It makes sense to travel together and set up a village of tents from one specific region. Being an international event, this means that you can experience a rich selection of samples of international cuisine at the Camp, as several hackers already announced to bring local food to the site.
You may want to start your day in the Austrian village, called LeiwandVille (“leiwand” is Viennese slang for “cool” or “fabulous”), as these people promise on their page to provide breakfast. So sit down, enjoy true European coffee culture and have a “Milchkaffee” or “Kaffee verkehrt” (coffee with milk). And if you want to order this in original Austrian-German pronunciation, you should memorize this sound file.
For lunch you have several options, but one of the best is probably Italia, the (you guessed it) Italian village. “Silvano Sartore is trying to organize an Italian Hacker Restaurant in the Italian Embassy, dani suggests the name CCCC (Cookin’ in CCC)” they say on their page and who wouldn’t love this? There’s probably not a single person on this planet who doesn’t like Italian food.
After lunch you may want some sweets, so go over to the Portuguese village, known as CampoTuga (“tuga” is the short slang form of “português”, as in “Hip Hop Tuga”, Portuguese rap). According to their page, they will bring traditional cream cakes, pastéis de Belém. Sounds like the perfect dessert, doesn’t it?
If you’re still hungry around dinner-time, why not pay a visit to the Spanish village? Their page promises paella, gazpacho, and tortilla de papas, yummy!
Then, late at night, for a midnight snack, the Belgian embassy is the place to go. Hackers from Belgium seem to know what the international hacker community expects from them: “Een friteuse voor fritten te maken ;)” – a deep fryer to make authentic Belgian fries! Hooray! Let’s hope that they have enough mayonnaise with them to make that “pak friet” a true delight.
