| Tracking users and managing their online identity across multiple services is the cornerstone of the dominance of the Internet by the big OTTs. Currently, Google, Facebook and other companies who live off user data monetization are the only ones offering Internet-wide single-sign-on services to average users; these services build more walled gardens which give no choice, no rights and no freedoms to the users. This is why it is strategically important to create an open alternative: a federated, public, free identity infrastructure for the Internet that would give users the same level of convenience and security, but empower them to choose their identity provider and control which personal information is shared and to whom.
The session will open with a general presentation, including data, of how the big OTTs are growing and focusing their revenue sources on advertising and on tracking online identities, centralizing the economy of the Internet and of the world, to prove how crucial this issue is. Then, the talk will discuss introduce the work done within the DomainID/iNetID project to create a decentralized public identity infrastructure for the open Internet, going into technical details on the proposed architecture, and looking for community feedback and participation.
