We (the Lucy Parsons Labs), will be presenting on our project OpenOversight which aims to build a public database of police officers and their faces in Chicago. In Chicago thousands of complaints against police are thrown out due to no officer identification being available. This tool aims to enable people to identify the police officers that harmed them in order to file misconduct complaints against them. Using methods inspired by police surveillance on citizens, we've collected data from scraping social media, monitoring police officer activity at protests, as well as from public records requests. Called "a little bit extreme" by the Chicago Fraternal Order of Police (the police union), we hope to discuss challenges, how to create projects like this at
scale, and potential political challenge for projects like this. Further, we will discuss motivations, community feedback, data management and ideas for further surveillance on police officers.
