What is happening in the parliamentary investigation in Germany, how does it work, what has been achieved so far and will there be asylum for Snowden in Berlin?
What's the point and the purpose to do this work in parliament? I'd also like to discuss what is happening along these lines in other countries with participants from the respective countries.
This will be a mix of talk and discussion: I'll talk about some facts and findings and then there will be lots of room for debate.
Background: The German federal parliament voted unanimously in March to have an investigation on mass surveillance, its effects on people in Germany and what to do about it. The so-called inquiry committee on mass surveillance, aka 'NSA inquiry' has been going on for 9 months now. I have joined as a researcher for one of the opposition parties in parliament and will talk about what has happened so far, what is possible to achieve in a situation where the government coalition has 80% of the seats in parliament and is not eager to digg too deep into the involvement of German politicians into mass surveillance.
Germany is becoming known increasingly as a safe haven for whistleblowers these days but its government clearly is no ally. What can a parliamentary inquiry be good for under these circumstances?
