This talk contemplates the absurdity of our world and claims to know one simple reason for it: Human desire.
During our congress we discuss the future in many different ways. We discuss how technology might contribute to a positive future or how to mitigate the threats posed by technology. However, during our discussions we are often not talking about one crucial aspect of any future world: Human desire. Maybe because it is a little embarassing, messy and hard to grasp. Maybe because we are more comfortable talking about facts than feelings. At any rate, our desires do not come up very often. Why not?
Human desire is what moves us and makes us happy (and miserable). Human desire is insatiable and limitless, and most of our modern world is focused on its fulfillment. Of course, trying to fulfill a need that is insatiable and limitless must result in escalating absurdity. Any future will be absolutely insane from today's point of view. Is that a bad thing? What should we do about it?
