Can't touch this: Introduction to self defense for women
Hi, I don't know what the intention was, but the description of this session is quite sexist. When I read "for women", I do expect a safe space of a kind, or at least the intention of trying to create a safer space where women/non-binary people can learn, share and discuss without having the typical hierarchies, or I'm-so-important-and-cool-and-experienced-dude attitudes which are characteristic for society as a whole and unfortunately for hacker communities in particular. This expectation is not met. It is in fact lifted in the first sentence of the description: "This workshop is of course open to men and women". I mean, if it is open for men and women, one can write "for men and women" (what about people who don't define themselves are neither men nor women though?) or can leave out "for women" altogether. People wouldn't get the wrong impression that way. However, it is the second sentence of the description, which I find really really bad. "It is however not an introduction on how to become Rambo and therefore labelled "for women" to avoid false expectations." What I read here is: "women cannot be good, skillful martial arts practitioners. This is something only men can. So "for women"="for people who are weak, inexperienced, clueless and from nature not predisposed to become good at it." I hope, the sexism inherent to this reading is obvious without further remarks. I actually do think, the sexism in the description is also self-evident and blatant. So, again, maybe the intention behind the session was good. The description is however not ok. NOT. -- lusy [28.12.2016 13:30]
Dear lusy, the issue was discussed with the Awareness Angels and the misleading descriptions were corrected. I am sorry that you feel offended. If it helps, I warmly invite you to discuss the topic personally with me.
Best regards,
