Live-Streams

To access 31c3 live streams use the web player interface at http://streaming.media.ccc.de. It includes an live subtitles player and irc client.

Follow @c3streaming on twitter to get up to date information.

The live streams are available in a different of formats, over a variety of transports. For each room is at High Definition (HD, 1080p?) and Standard Definition (SD, 576p?) stream available.

Each stream is available in the native language of the talk (english or german), as well as including a translation (german or english).

The video are encoded in either AVC h.264 or WebM VP8, the audio only streams in mp3 or opus. AVC/h.264 is provided via RTMP and HLS.

This time we won't provide a full matrix of the available streams, as the streaming urls are already listed in the above web interface.

In the following sections we try to collect some more information when to use which stream and client. Please add your own experiences.

Opt-out

The following events will not be streamed:

28.12.2014, 00:00: Citizenfour (Saal 1)
30.12.2014, 00:15: Googlequiz – 2015er Edition (Saal 1)

RTMP

RTMP only works with native clients like VLC/mplayer or flash. They contain a h.264 stream and there is one stream per available resolution/quality which have to be switched manually if required. This one of the stream types with lower latency. In the CCH you can expect around 15 seconds.

The player on the website falls back to rtmp and therefore flash if nothing else works.

Live Streaming with Kodi (XBMC) as a client works fine also.

HLS

HTTP live steams (HLS) contain h.264/MPEG AVC video and should work on

  • most iOS devices
  • Android with
    • native (since Android 4)
    • Daroon Player
  • PCs with
    • VLC >1.2
    • current FFmpeg
    • current MPlayer
    • Quicktime X
    • Safari webbrowser

If you choose the "Auto"-Stream URL, your player will choose the optimal quality for your connection. Rewinding to the past, also known as VOD or Relive is provided at http://streaming.media.ccc.de/relive/ .

WebM

This http stream uses VP8 as video codec and Vorbis for audio. They should work natively in on PC in Firefox, Chrome and Android ≥ 4.

Audio

Audio only streams are good if you don't need video or only have low bandwidth (e.g. mobile phone). MP3 should be played with nearly every player out there. Opus works in VLC and is even more bandwidth-friendly.

Images

As an alternative to video or as an addition to audio-only there is a page, where you can follow the video streams by screenshots only. This uses very low bandwidth and gives you an idea of what's happening. You can read the slides and see a face to what you hear, but nothing more. You can use the images provided to create your own screenshot page as well and post it here.

On-site

DVB-T

There will be three 500mW DVB-T transmitters placed in the CCH. Each of them is going to transmit all the main lecture halls with native and translated audio.

The frequencies are as follows:

  • Transmitter 1 (Location: Haal 3, ground floor): Channel 22 (482 MHz)
  • Transmitter 2 (Location: Gaderoben Foyer 1, first floor): Channel 24 (498 MHz) Not yet deployed
  • Transmitter 3 (Location: Zwischenfoyer 1+2, third floor): Channel 26 (514 MHz) Currently deployed at VOC with 2mW output power, might have reception at Saal 1 and 2.

For VLC, you can use the following XSPF-file: http://pastebin.com/EXp5Hpkn

More details will be published here once they are known.

Multicast

All streams will be multicast throughout the event network (Ethernet only). Use VLC -> Network Streams (SAP) to discover streams, URIs are:

  • Saal 1 udp://@233.50.220.1:2342
  • Saal 2 udp://@233.50.220.2:2342
  • Saal G udp://@233.50.220.3:2342
  • Saal 6 udp://@233.50.220.4:2342

All halls should be working now.
