Neuschwabenland Retro Hacking
Neuschwabenland is a virtual hackerspace for real, fake and perceived real Swabians who have been wandering the diaspora of new territory for decades.
We are retrocomputing enthusiasts who keep old computer technology alive as a culture and when we talk about getting hammered, we mean with a soldering iron, not (only) a bottle. We programme on computers that are as slow as Knight Rider is old, and tinker with music, demos and games in prehistoric programming languages. We believe that computer should be tools that we own (and not the other way round). We want to understand, change and shape what happens in them.
All galactic co-inhabitants are cordially invited to share in our enthusiasm for vintage computing and let themselves be infected by it. (Beings from outside of our galaxy are welcome too.)
Neuschwabenland (New Swabia) is not just a funny portmanteau word, but also exists as a geographical region in Antarctica that has been affected by several madmen throughout world history: it was once the destination of a Nazi expedition, later a projection screen for conspiracy theorists, and most recently it was hit with punitive tariffs by an orange-coloured American. Virtually always on site, we see ourselves not only as a nice, ironic group of 80s freaks, but also as a rebellious and grass-root(!) democratic resistance (measurable in ohms), with our slogan: "Penguins of Antarctica - Antifa New Swabia!".
Hands-on activities
- Browse through old programmes from a time when paper was still a data storage medium.
- Play, test and develop with us the first release of ‘Grünkohl Diktator’, based on the legendary BASIC game ‘Imbiss’.
- Ever seen a vector monitor? Forget pixel-based graphics – you won't find lines this smooth anywhere else.
- Designing graphics on a Commodore 64 with 16 colors, strange limitations, and a total screen resolution smaller than a modern icon. (And the pixels aren't even square!)
- Join us in creating synth soundscapes using analogue and digital signal processing.
- Take part in retro coding code golf and show everyone who's got the shortest! 16 challenges await you.
