Artificial intelligence is at the top of its hype... again, because as we shall see in this session, the cycle of hype and disappointment ("AI winter") is as old as the field itself. The current phase is driven by big data and advances in machine learning, and promises to have a massive impact on all kinds of industries and society in general.

But where there is potential, there is also hype, confusion, overpromise, bullshit bingo, and even charlatanry. Nowadays even the simplest use of algorithms often gets branded as AI. And grand visions of intelligent machines are in contrast with many companies still struggling with the basics. Are we inevitably headed for a new AI winter?

This is the chasm: After hype and inflated expectations, there will be disappointment. And after the disappointment, there may be insight and productivity, if we do it right. How can we get over the chasm in one piece?

All creatures, but especially hackers with practical experience in the field of AI, Machine Learning and Data Science, are invited to join the conversation.
