Ways of Talking about IoT for CryptoParties

From 35C3 Wiki

Description A facilitated conversation on IoT for people involved in the CryptoParty community. The current IoT landscape presents many security and privacy issues, plus most of the projects currently on the market are inseparable from major corporations who make their money from data harvesting. Alternatively, there are self-made alternatives and self-hosting, but are there inherent concerns to the expanding network of connected sensors? How do we balance possible benefits of IoT, the inevitability of this technology, and our desires for a freer and more compassionate future?

Thing to talk about:

Philosophical

  • What constitutes IoT?
  • Self-made device security concerns
  • Values beyond free software
  • Understanding the potential role of AIC triad? (Accessibility, integrity, confidentiality)
  • Machine learning
  • The future of IoT (bad consumer products and sky net)
  • Data fetishisation and inadvertent data collection in the context of massive modelling and deanonimisation

Four categories of IoT:

  • Wearables/ self-tracking/ quantified self
  • Smart home/ energy efficiently
  • Smart cities/ mass tracking
  • IIoT (industrial internet of things or Industry 4.0)

Population concerns:

  • Disabilities (differential benefits, technologically facilitated autonomy)
  • Health
  • Stalking/ domestic violence
  • Children and the elderly
  • Workers’ rights (both consumer tech surveillance by employers and from IIoT)

What kinds of advice for harm reduction/ mitigation for IoT can we come up with?
