Finding accomodation in Berlin shouldn't be a big problem. There are a ton of cheap hostels around the city and many of them are pretty close to Alexanderplatz.
You might also want to try the Hospitality Club.
If you have a lean budget, maybe the Gym is a good pick.
Also a lot of rooms for low prices are available now at travel.ian.com or www.hrs.de.
