Getting around safely at 40C3
In short: Please leave bicycles, scooters, skateboards, roller skates, and similar wheeled vehicles at home. Riding them is not permitted on the 40C3 event grounds. Mobility aids are, of course, exempt.
We want everyone at Congress to feel safe and welcome. Making that possible is a shared responsibility. When many people come together, meet, stop to chat, and explore, we all need to look out for one another. Not everyone can notice an approaching vehicle in time or move out of its way quickly. Even a minor collision can have serious consequences. That's why we want to keep the risks in our shared spaces as low as possible.
At 40C3, riding bicycles, kick scooters, electric scooters, Segways, skateboards, inline skates, roller skates, and similar wheeled vehicles is not permitted anywhere on the event grounds. This applies indoors and outdoors, whether motorized or not, regardless of speed. Riding slowly or finding a seemingly empty path does not change this rule.
This rule is intended to keep everyone at Congress safe. Especially when large numbers of people are present, it is not possible to reliably determine when riding is still safe and when it becomes dangerous. That's why we have deliberately chosen not to introduce speed limits or other exceptions that would be difficult to judge and follow in practice.
Please allow enough time to get around Congress on foot. We ask you to leave these vehicles and recreational devices at home whenever possible, or park them outside the event grounds without blocking entrances or pathways.
These restrictions do not apply to mobility aids used by people with disabilities, such as wheelchairs and other necessary mobility devices. They make participation possible and are a natural part of Congress. Please be especially considerate of people who rely on these aids and keep their paths clear.
Thank you for helping make Congress safer and more accessible for everyone. As always, our shared principle remains: Be excellent to each other.
