Tape Backup Service
The tape backup service is a concept that will be tested for the first time at 39c3.
Our initial goal at the Congress is to offer interested individuals access to and a place to exchange tape storage. To this end, we will bring a server, a tape library and tapes with us.
Whether we continue to offer this as a service in the future will depend on the response and our capacity.
But first, let's talk about 39c3:
We want to give everyone at the Congress access to tape backup. To this end, we are providing LTO5 (1.5 TB) and LTO6 (2.5 TB) tapes free of charge* (while stocks last) and are also operating the necessary infrastructure to read and write them.
This is how we envisage the project:
-
You click to create a user account.
-
You transfer your data to tapes via our cache server (see Implementation).
-
You take your tapes with your data home with you (cold storage).
-
If you want to recover your data after losing it on other media, you contact us for a possible solution.
Implementation:
We provide a server with encrypted storage. The data can be uploaded to this server. You then generate your own encryption key, which is used to encrypt the data on the tapes.
- A tape costs between €15 and €25. These are costs that we actually incur, as we do not receive any sponsorship for them. We therefore welcome donations so that the project can continue to exist.
