Selfnet and its ally WH-Netz provide network access and other IT-infrastructure for students in Stuttgart. It is a non-profit organization, run by students and was founded in 1999. The network connects more than 4200 dormitory rooms with over 9000 devices using Gigabit-Ethernet. The core network consists of a 20GE fiber ring through Stuttgart and a sufficient uplink to the Internet.

About 40 active members take care of putting the 'software' in 'software-defined networking', sign up new users, build the network and turn the office into a small hackerspace.

Besides the usual IT needed to run such a network, a few other services like TV via IP-Multicast have emerged. Selfnet is also providing servers and bandwidth for the congress streaming relays.

Wherever possible, open source software and open standards are beeing used. The organization is largely independent from third parties or fundings.
