What is CAcert? --- Was ist CAcert?

CAcert is a certification authority offering free digital certificates through a network of 4000 assurers worldwide.

You can gain more trustpoints for your CAcert account and you'll also meet some interesting people. ;-)

Digital certificates can be used for HTTPS (secured websites), S/Mime (secured emails), and other applications.

CAcert ist eine Zertifizierungsstelle, die digitale Zertifikate gratis ausstellt. Die Identität der Personen wird durch ein Netzwerk von ca. 4000 Assurern weltweit überprüft.

What can I do to participate? --- Was muss ich tun, um teilzunehmen?

You should follow these steps:

1. If possible, create your account before: Create CAcert Account.
2. Remember your password! Forgetting it might cost you 10 USD/EUR
3. Take 2 governmental issued photo IDs (drivers license, passwort, personal ID) to Berlin and visit the CAcert assurers there :-)

1. Bitte wenn möglich vorher einen CAcert Account anlegen. (Ansonsten möglichst bald danach nachholen)
2. Mit amtlichen Lichtbildausweisen (Personalausweis, Führerschein, Reisepass) zu den CAcert Assurern kommen

How does the whole thing work? --- Wie funktioniert das alles?

You proof your identity to assurers of CAcert by showing official photo IDs (i.e driving licence and passport). Those can issue you points. You need 100 points to be fully assured. To get them you have to meet at least 3 people who have 150 Points or 10 other people who have 100. On the 22c3 you can get 120 points directly. Sie beweisen ihre Identität gegenüber Assureren (Leute die Ihre Identität bereits hinlänglich bewiesen haben) durch die Vorlage von offiziellen Lichtbildausweisen (z.B. Führerschein und Paß). Die Assurer können daraufhin Punkte vergeben. Sie brauchen 100 Punkte um CAcert vollständig nutzen zu können und müssen dafür 3 Leute mit 150 Punkten oder 10 Leute mit 100 Punkten treffen.
