Chaos Communication Congress (C3) is a big annual event for people who love technology, cybersecurity, free culture, and creativity. Since 1984, it has been held in Germany, first mostly in German, then in English to connect people worldwide.

Today, thanks to International Sign (IS), everyone deaf or hearing can fully join. IS makes communication open, equal, and accessible, helping people overcome language barriers and work together.

There are over 300 sign languages in the world, some more than 5,000 years old. IS has been used for several decades by the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) and the Deaflympics Games (ICSD). These organizations used to have a hierarchy, but today IS allows a holarchy, where everyone has a place and communication is shared equally.

A big question is: why choose English instead of International Sign? English helps hearing people communicate worldwide. But IS allows deaf and hearing people to connect more equally, opening space for sharing and understanding deaf cultures.

Nest of Sign Language is a multilingual, participatory Signmunity at House of Tea. It brings together deaf and hearing participants to share knowledge, culture, and experiences and explore the future of cypherpunks in International Sign. The community supports sign language rights, privacy, and fights audism and Signocide – the erasure of sign languages and deaf cultures through oral education, bans, and lack of access.

Fediverse Signmunity helps online by providing a decentralized platform where members worldwide can interact, create, and share content, strengthening the visibility of global Signmunities.

Workshops let participants practice IS, DGS, OGS, LSF, BSL, ASL, and more, as well as create, share, and connect in a friendly and inspiring space. Some IS interpreters are certified, but will they be at 40C3? Conferences and workshops are moments to learn, share, and dream together, no matter your language or background.

Sumain concept raises awareness among hearing people, promotes gestural and language diversity, and strengthens the coexistence of deaf and hearing cultures. The goal is a fairer, more conscious, and equal society, where International Sign and other sign languages are freely used.
