Camp 2023 – Village Reminder

Dear villages,

Since the third and last ticket round ended last Saturday, you should now have a good picture of how many people your village will involve. Also, you should have developed some ideas around now on what you want to do and what you need to bring.

Don’t miss the registration deadline

If you haven’t registered your village yet, it’s high time: Registration closes this Friday, 30 June 2023 at 23:42 CEST (UTC+0200). Don’t wait until midnight.

The original Call for Villages is here:
https://events.ccc.de/2023/05/30/camp23-call-for-villages/

Register your villages here:
https://events.ccc.de/camp/2023/hub/backoffice/

Update your village registration

This is the perfect moment to give some love to your village registration. Please update your registration data and tell us what you want to to. Please fill in the “signup information” field as soon as possible. If you are using a pad or a wiki for the organisation of your village, we’d be happy to have that link. The more precisely the village crew knows what you intend to do, the better they can plan everything – which also benefits you.

Plan your presentation

Use this moment now to put content into the description fields “Öffentliche Beschreibung [de]” and “Description [en]”. This info will be available publicly on the event website later, giving you the opportunity to present yourself and to lure visitors into your village. Even if you’re not planning to attract visitors, these fields should be filled by day 0 at latest.

Order stuff in the shop

Camp takes place in the high season of outdoor events. Especially furniture and those ugly white standard tents have a long lead time for renting. Order these preferably no later than Friday, 7 July 2023. After that day, the chances that we can still get something for you will drop rapidly.

[NEW!] We’re pleased to announce there’s a new item in the shop: Cooling-as-a-service (CaaS), meaning shelf space in a shared refrigerated container, is now available for order. All details can be found in the village shop.

Questions? You can contact us at camp2023-villages@cccv.de or in the public Matrix channel #camp2023-villages:events.ccc.de.

The Call for Particpation has been extended not only in terms of the deadline, but also its scope. We want to inspire you to use the stages for more than just talks! Two new tracks have been added for this purpose: “performance” and “entertainment”. These can include practically anything that can happen on a stage beyond a regular talk (or DJ set).

Among the things we had in previous events were code readings or beautiful Fnords – there also were poetry slams or lyrical code. Games, contests or audio features have been staged regularly. Maybe you would enjoy reenacting your village organisational meetings as an audio drama, or one of your plenaries as theatre? It is not a requirement that you a cover a full time slot; we will surely find a space for a shorter performance, sketch or reading as well.

Read the original Call for Participation with all details about the process:
https://events.ccc.de/2023/05/09/camp23-call-for-participation/#camp2023-cfp-english

We are very keen to receive your creative ideas and submissions of an entertaining/artistic kind, and we would be very happy if you spread this call beyond our usual bubbles!

Please use the conference planning system for your submissions as usual, and help others with the form filling:
https://pretalx.c3voc.de/chaos-communication-camp-2023/cfp

Dear people,

we have received requests – especially from international speakers – to extend the CfP until after the pre-sale rounds. Additionally, some potential submitters wanted to wait to see if they would get a ticket before doing so.

We have therefore decided to extend the Call for Participation. It’s possible that some stages no longer have openings in their schedules and cannot accept any more talks. In this case, submissions will be released to any other stages that have more capacity left.

Camp 2023 – Call for Villages

Camp 2023 is getting closer – villages, what’s your plan? Cool f00 that is sustainable and reusable? We can’t wait to find out how Chaos envisions a society of tomorrow.

Structures

Once again this year, we want an event that is safe for everyone. Please discuss your plans with the village coordinators early on, especially for large villages and elaborate structures. For example, a permit is required for canopies larger than 75 square metres or structures taller than 5 metres. Structures must be constructed in such a way that they are not a fire hazard. Let us know in your application if you have bigger plans.

Vehicles

Cars or similar vehicles generally do not belong in the villages. Exceptions are made for vehicles that are an integral part of the village, i.e. not just for sleeping. Examples would be a mobile hackspace in a bus, a water cannon with a protest background or a car whose CAN bus is being hacked. An open hardware project with active development on the camp is welcome (after confirmed registration), a cool DIY project alone is not enough.

No digging, no large earth nails

Like last time, no holes, pits or sub-basements are allowed. There are still various pipes and cables that are just below the surface and insufficiently documented. So please plan without long ground nails and pegs and do not sink them deeper than 25 cm into the ground.

Village Shop

Like last time, there will be a store for villages where you can order large tents, seating, gas, etc. centrally instead of all of you having to transport these things across the country or rent everything individually somewhere else. We are also working on having community coolers. As soon as we know more about this, we will let you know.

Kitchens, Water

Villages are allowed to run a kitchen for self-catering. (Possible add-on: we recommend that the main person in charge of the kitchen has a basic food safety certificate [“meatball diploma”]. Any initial training that may be required can also be done at camp, details to follow.)

For fire safety reasons, only electricity or gas may be used for cooking, no open fires.

If you need water for your kitchen, please let us know – but be prepared to use hand trucks and water containers.

Music and other noise

Music is great. But not always, and not at any volume. The permitted volume depends on the location. It’s best to let us know if you want your village (including any other noise) to be above lounge volume, or if you’d rather be in a quieter corner. If you are expecting a completely silent campsite though, you will likely be disappointed at the camp. It is still an open air event and not an idyllic nature vacation in a mountain hut.

In general: pay attention to your fellow human beings and take care of each other so we will all have a good time.

Registration

Please register your village as soon as possible at:
https://events.ccc.de/camp/2023/hub/backoffice/

We have put together a form for you there. The more precisely you can answer the questions, the easier it will be for us to plan and save you from having to ask further questions. If your registration is accepted, you will get access to the village shop for tents, tables, chairs etc..

Remember to update your data regularly after registration, especially if your village size changes.

The deadline for villages to register is Friday, 30 June 2023 at 23:42 CEST (UTC+0200).

Any questions?

You can reach us at camp2023-villages@cccv.de or in the public matrix channel #camp2023-villages:events.ccc.de.

It is one of those special years again – a Chaos Communication Camp is going to happen. We invite you to submit talks for this hacker event that only takes place every four years.

There will be five channel stages where talks will be held over five days at Ziegeleipark Mildenberg. The stages are managed by multiple groups, each with their own focus. We are looking forward to your submissions on topics around technology, hacking, InfoSec, decentralised networks, Free Software, sustainability, digital & human rights.

We welcome all content proposals and submissions. In particular we want to encourage FLINTA* (Female, Lesbian, Inter, Non-Binary, Trans, Agender) and Queer individuals, BIPOC and humans from the Global South to submit their talks, workshops or Lightning Talks.

These channels are keen to receive your submissions:

Milliways with the following topics: InfoSec and “hands-on” talks on offensive and defensive security. Other focal points on the Milliways stage include hacking, tinkering with or without software, firmware, computer architecture and algorithms, as well as presentations on social engineering.

Digitalcourage is curating a programme on (digital) politics and welcomes submissions for talks, workshops or artistic contributions. In a tent hosting about 50 people, there will be room for all kinds of topics dealing with a world worth living in the digital age.

Jugend hackt [youth is hacking] will be happy to receive your submission for ages 12 to 21. We welcome any proposals ranging from talks, workshops, to sports, games and other fun activities. Follow this link to the CfP of Jugend hackt.

Bits & Bäume [bits and trees] has a technical and socio-political focus, and is looking forward to talks and workshops on decentralised networks, free software, sustainability and social responsibility.

The Nerds from the OberRheinische Tiefebene [Upper Rhine Plain] and xHain (N:O:R:T:x) are looking forward to anything “normal”: fnords, whacky, unfinished, cute, fluffy, …

If you don’t want to submit a talk or workshop, but would like to present your musical talents at the event, we are looking forward to your submission.

You can choose between the track “live act” for a band or solo project and “DJ set” for DJ Sets.. In order for us to find your submissions, please choose ‘Performance’ as the submission type.

Dates und Deadlines

This Call for Proposals end on 9 June 2023. We will let you know one month later whether your talk was selected.

Notes on Submission

All proposals must be submitted through our Conference Planning tool (Pretalx).

You can find it here: https://pretalx.c3voc.de/chaos-communication-camp-2023/cfp

Content Notes

Please consider adding content notes to your submission. This can help your audience to be prepared especially for sensitive topics. We recommended that you read the information provided by the Inclusion Operation Center.

Feel free to indicate whether your talk is suitable for or even aimed at minors.

Formats

The following content formats can be submitted (“session type” in Pretalx):

Talks (45 minutes + 15 minutes for questions)

Short Talk (20 minutes + 10 minutes for questions)

Lightning Talks (5 minutes, no questions)

Live Workshop (60 Minutes)

Performance (60 Minutes)

Submissions for workshops without live streaming will be made possible in other ways.

Language

The Camp has an international audience. But of course many German speakers will be in attendance. A lot of content was presented in English in past events. If you struggle with presenting in English, we encourage you to consider if presenting in German would suit you better. C3Lingo will try their best to provide simultaneous translation between these two languages for many talks.

Please submit the meta information for your talk in the same language that you will use to give your talk. This helps reduce confusion.

Publication

Audio and video recordings will be published in multiple formats on media.ccc.de under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license. This license allows other media to commercially use this content for news reporting.

If you do not wish your talk to be recorded or livestreamed, please state so in your submission. For technological reasons it does not make sense to livestream but not record a talk, as livestreams can be recorded and published by the audience.

What we do not want

Submissions for this event should be entertaining and educational. The audience is much more interested in social and/or technical aspects of a topic than in a “product presentation”.

The Camp is a forum for civil society. It takes a critical stance on topics such as “security” policy, copyright, surveillance and intelligence agencies. We reserve the right to be less open towards submissions from active actors in these fields.

Entrance fee & travel expenses

The Camp is a non-commercial event. It is facilitated by the community and costs are to be distributed on a basis of solidarity between all participants. We therefore do not differentiate between attendees, speaker and angels. This means that speakers cannot be reimbursed for travel or other expenses.

A talk submission does not guarantee access to the Camp. Please make sure to buy a ticket as soon as the presale starts.

Should your circumstances make it impossible for you to afford the entrance fee, you can ask for a “friends” ticket.

If you are travelling from outside the European Union, please remember to arrange for a visa in time. Unfortunately we are not able to issue invitation letters. If you need to apply for a visa, please state this in your content submission. We will then strive to expedite your submission in the selection process.

The rumours are true! The 36th Chaos Communication Congress (36C3) is going to happen in Leipzig and will, for the most part, be organised and structured like last year’s 35C3.

We’ve just launched our Call for Participation and announced an official invitation on our website.

Heads Up: Due to a more relaxed start after an exhausting Camp, the due date is approaching rapidly. Please hand in your submissions before 26 October 2019.

The Chaos Communication Camp in Mildenberg is an open-air hacker camp and party that takes place every four years, organized by the Chaos Computer Club (CCC). Thousands of hackers, technology freaks, artists and utopians get together for five days in the Brandenburg summer – to communicate, learn, hack and party together.

We focus on topics such as information technology, digital security, hacking, crafting, making and breaking, and we engage in creative, sceptical discourse on the interaction between technology and society.

We’d love to see your submission for these tracks:

Arts & Culture,

Ethics, Society & Politics,

Hardware & Making,

Security & Hacking,

Science.

Apart from the official conference program on the main stages, the Chaos Communication Camp also offers space for community villages, developer and project meetings, art installations, lightning talks and numerous workshops (called “self-organized sessions”).

Lightning talks

Got something interesting to say but don’t want to submit a full talk? Consider doing a lightning talk instead! You will have five minutes to present your ideas or projects – or just to rant, if you need to vent. A formal submission through our submission system (called „frab“) is not required; as usual, the lightning talks are organized via our public wiki. Lightning talks can be held in German or English and will be streamed, recorded and published (see below).

For projects, installations, workshops, sessions hosted in assemblies and other fun stuff is no formal submission through frab required. There will be a wiki page to keep track of requirements for space and other resources. Simply start already considering now what you would like to make, bring, or show, and write it down once the wiki goes online.

Dates & deadlines

May 22th, 2019: Call for Participation

June 11th, 2019 (23:59 CEST): Deadline for submissions

July 10th: Notification of acceptance

August 21st – 25th, 2019: Chaos Communication Camp at Ziegeleipark Mildenberg

Submission guidelines for talks

All lectures need to be submitted to our conference planning system under the following URL: https://frab.cccv.de/cfp/camp2019.

Please follow the instructions there. If you have any questions regarding the submission, you are welcome to contact us via mail at camp2019-content@cccv.de.

Please send us a description of your suggested talk that is as complete as possible. The description is the central criteria for acceptance or rejection, so please ensure that it is as clear and complete as possible. Quality comes before quantity. Due to the non-commercial nature of the event, presentations which aim to market or promote commercial products or entities will be rejected without consideration.

Since most participants find – or don’t find a lecture by its title, it’s important to keep your talk description precise, accessible and comprehensible. Our teams will keep a keen eye on title and subtitle and make suggestions to change them if necessary, so please avoid insider jokes and stereotypes.

As it is likely that there will be multiple submissions on the same topic, please show us exactly why your talk should be part of the conference. Remember that the teams are diversely staffed, and not every reviewer knows every submitter and their backgrounds. Please write something about yourself, your research, and your motivation. It does not matter if the talk has been held at another conference somewhere on this planet, as long as it is up to date and relevant.

Talks should be 45 minutes long and can include up to 15 minutes for questions and answers. Longer slots are possible if absolutely necessary, but should be an exception. Please take our limited amount of presentation time into consideration, check how much time you really need to bring home your points and then tell us the proposed length of your talk.

Language

Although the Chaos Communication Camp is an international event and a lot of content is presented in English, there will again be a translation team that will simultaneously translate most German talks into English. So if you are not comfortable with presenting in English, don’t hesitate to present your lecture in German. If your talk will be held in English, your submission should also be in English.

Publication

Audio and video recordings of the lectures will be published in various formats at media.ccc.de under the license Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0). This license allows commercial use of excerpts by media institutions as part of their reporting. If you do not wish for material from your lecture to be published or streamed, please let us know in your submission.

Note: As German law (and therefore the license) might differ from the law of your country, please let us know if you have any issues or questions regarding the exact implications. Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee a perfect translation.

Travel, costs & visa

The Chaos Communication Camp is a great adventure for us, also financially. As we’re all there to have a nice time together, and split the costs, we cannot offer a different entrance fee for speakers, workshop organizers or angels. The camp is a non-commercial event where neither the organisers nor the speakers are being paid – thus, we cannot provide a free entrance ticket, even for speakers. If necessary, we are however able to provide limited support for travel costs.

If you need help applying for a visa, such as an official invitation to present to the German embassy, please let the content team know well in advance. Please be aware that the visa application procedure may take up to six weeks or longer!

The CCC calls for participation and your submissions!

34C3 – 34th Chaos Communication Congress
December 27th through 30th 2017, Leipziger Exhibition Grounds in Leipzig.

The Event

The Chaos Communication Congress is the Chaos Computer Club’s (CCC) annual symposium and hacker party. During four days between Christmas and New Years Eve, thousands of hackers, technology freaks, artists, and utopians get together in Leipzig to communicate, learn from each other, and party together. We focus on topics such as information technology, networks, digital security, making, and breaking. We engage in creative, sceptical discourse on the interaction between technology and society.

We’d love to see your submission for one or more of our six tracks:

Art & Culture,

Ethics, Society & Politics,

Hardware & Making,

Security,

Science,

Resilience.

Apart from the official conference program, the Chaos Communication Congress also offers space for community assemblies, developer and project meetings, art installations, lightning talks, and workshops. We also have special places for kids to learn and tinker.

Tracks

Art & Culture

This track awaits submissions that address, from an artistic perspective or with artistic means, the societal changes and contradictions caused by computers, the internet, robots, and general digitalization.
One can create art and beauty with computers: We’re also open to lectures that include art installations, performances, concerts, readings, etc., that involve past, contemporary, or upcoming technologies. We will try to help with the organizational side of such lectures as much as possible.

Ethics, Society & Politics

We’re looking forward to submissions which address present and future societal, ethical, and political questions that arise from the technologization and digitization of all aspects of life. What will the future bring? Which commercial and political interests are in the way of an utopia worth living, and how can they be overcome?
Any activistic, fantastical, solidary, and commerce-free ideas and concepts are welcome here.

Hardware & Making

This track is all about developing and creatively using things that allow the digital to make a physical impression.
The focus is on creating things of all kinds of (e. g. textiles, musical instruments, robots, alternative energy, medical tools, etc.), the expansion, repair, and liberation of proprietary systems (from the decapped smart-card to the firmware of your toaster to a modified agricultural machine), the sovereign use of technology, getting your hands dirty, and all the things we can’t imagine yet – and of course rockets!

Security

For this track we would like to request submissions that show how hardware and software can be made either more secure or less secure.
If you want to share your discoveries with thousands of fellow security enthusiasts, if you have developed new solutions to previously unsolved problems, or if you have found new problems which we knew nothing about, then this is the right track for you.

Science

The rapid development of science and technology is steadily changing our view of the world. But that doesn’t only mean that we’re profiting from new technology as a byproduct. We are also increasingly trying to understand the complex relationship between nature and society, in order to comprehend how our actions parameterize this whole system. We see science as a method of reverse engineering the world API and are interested in the newest diffs. No matter whether research centres, universities, or garage-driven science: If you explore and evaluate interesting and important developments from a scientific standpoint, then send us your submissions!

This year we’re especially interested in submissions regarding the phenomenon of climate change in its whole width and complexity. We are interested in everything from sociocultural effects to frost-resistant measurement technology, from the past to the near future, from the depth of the oceans up to the atmosphere. What are the actual effects of the technical and societal systems we have built? What will be the next Dieselgate, and which active approaches towards solving the problems are there?

Resilience

The world is developing at an increasing pace, and most of it involves computers and algorithms. Unfortunately, those developments do not necessarily equal progress. Some increase complexity; others require waiving freedoms. But many projects already incorporate recent research, like p2p gossipping networks (meaning less data accumulates at central points as everyone runs their own infrastructure), extended OS security (reducing persistence, new policies, virtualisation), or reorganised social frameworks intended to simplify life (by eliminating bureaucracy and sources of stress), and, of course, reduction of our dependency on human competition.

In the resilience track all submissions are welcome that lead to a world more worthy of living in – be they long-running projects or recent developments.

New Feature: Classifier

In addition to the content tracks you know from previous years, we now ask you to rate your submission by dynamic tags we call „classifiers“. Those help your reviewers and your audience to better understand the content and what your audience can expect. If, for example, your topics cover both hardware and security, you now can show us on a scale between 0 and 100 percent – making the classic „tracks“ much more fluid. You can also tell us what level of prior knowledge you expect your audience to bring.

Further Program at the 34C3

Lightning talks

Got something interesting to say but don’t want to submit a full talk? Consider doing a lightning talk instead. You will have five minutes to present your idea or project, or to do a rant. A formal submission through our conference system (frab) is not required; as usual, the lightning talks are organized via the public wiki. Lightning talks can be held in German or English and will be streamed, recorded and published (see below).

Assemblies

Assemblies are places where communities around a certain interest can meet, talk, exchange ideas and be inspired. Assemblies play a huge part in creating the special “congress atmosphere.” We will have lots of space, so some bigger installations will be possible.

To further the exchange and the get-together of communities and groups, we will cluster the assemblies at the 34C3 along key subjects. We will link these key subjects to bigger workshop areas, stages, or auditoriums which will be available for the assemblies connected to the subject for workshops, self-organized sessions or after talks discussion.

You and your community are interested in adopting a key subject, or your established assembly wants to take care of more space? Then write an email to c3-assemblies(at)lists.ccc.de and join the effort to create a great congress. Installations with up to 30m² big roofs are possible!

The usual application for assemblies will happen in due time at the public wiki.

Projects, installations, workshops and other fun stuff

A formal submission through frab is not required. There will be a wiki page to keep track of requirements for space and other resources. Simply start already considering now what you would like to make, bring, or show, and write it down once the wiki goes online. We are open to crazy and surprising stuff.

Submission Guidelines

Please send us a description of your suggested talk that is as complete as possible. The description is of particular importance for the selection, so please ensure that it is as clear as possible. Quality comes before quantity. Due to the non-commercial nature of the event, presentations which aim to market or promote commercial products or entities will not be entertained.

As it is likely that there will be multiple submissions on the same topic, please show us exactly why your talk should be part of the conference. Remember that the teams are diversely staffed, and not every reviewer knows every submitter and their background. Please write something about yourself, your research, and your motivation. It does not matter if the talk has been held at another conference somewhere on this planet, as long as it is up to date and relevant.

Talks should be either 45 minutes long plus 15 minutes for questions and answers or 20 minutes long plus 10 minutes for questions and answers. Longer slots are possible in principle. Please tell us the proposed length of your talk at the time of submission.

Language

Although the Chaos Communication Congress is an international event and a lot of content is presented in English, this year there will again be a translation team that will simultaneously translate most German talks into English. So if you are not comfortable with presenting in English, don’t hesitate to present your lecture in German. If your talk will be held in English, your submission should also be in English.

Publication

Audio and video recordings of the lectures will be published in various formats under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license.

The Chaos Communication Congress is a non-commercial event where neither the organisers nor the speakers are being paid. As a speaker, though, you get free admission. If necessary, we are able to provide limited support for travel costs. If you need help applying for a visa, such as an official invitation to present to a German embassy, please let the content team know well in advance. Please be aware that the visa application procedure may take up to six weeks.

We’d love to see your submission for one or more of these tracks:

Art & Culture,

Ethics, Society & Politics,

Tracks

Art & Culture

One can create art and beauty with any technology, including computers. This track awaits submissions that address, from an artistic perspective, the societal changes and contradictions caused by computers, the internet, robots and general digitalization.
Any activistic, fantastical, solidary and commerce-free ideas and concepts are welcome here.

Hardware & Making

This track is all about developing and creatively using things that allow the digital to make a physical impression. Reverse engineers, micro-controller developers and quantum physicists are all very welcome. Decapped smart cards and system-on-chips, sanded-down PCBs and reverse-engineered firmware should feel right at home, next to the cocktail-mixing 3D-printer and the hidden nuclear reactors you are secretly operating in your basement. The focus is on all kinds of hardware design, the expansion and liberation of proprietary system, getting your hands dirty – and of course rockets!

Security

For this track we would like to request submissions that show how hardware and software can be made either more secure or less secure.
Science

We have science to thank for our blinking computers, but not just that – nearly all progress in society and technology is facilitated by science in one way or another. This track features talks that look into progress from a scientific point of view and evaluate what has been achieved by science, whether it happened in research institutions, in universities, or in your backyard.
Besides topics in the social sciences, such as the history of secret services, research of alternative coexistence or economies, we are also interested in pressing questions of humanity’s growing need for energy, drug-resistant pathogens or access to drinking water. Furthermore, the big questions are also relevant: Are we alone in the universe? How does life work? How do I detect an infinite loop?

Submission guidelines

For talks

Please send us a description of your suggested talk that is as complete as possible. The description is of particular importance for the selection, so please ensure that it is as clear as possible. Quality comes before quantity. Due to the non-commercial nature of the event, presentations which aim to market or promote commercial products or entities will not be entertained.

As it is likely that there will be multiple submissions on the same topic, please show us exactly why your talk should be part of the conference. Remember that the teams are diversely staffed, and not every reviewer knows every submitter and their background. Please write something about yourself, your research and your motivation. It does not matter if the talk has been held at another conference somewhere on this planet, as long as it is up to date and relevant.

Talks should be either 45 minutes long plus 15 minutes for questions and answers or 20 minute long plus 10 minutes for questions and answers. Longer slots are possible in principle. Please tell us the proposed length of your talk at the time of submission.

For lightning talks

Got something interesting to say but don’t want to submit a full talk? Consider doing a lightning talk instead. You will have five minutes to present your idea, project, or to do a rant. The lightning talks will only be organised during the event. A formal submission is not required.

For projects, installations, workshops and other fun stuff

A formal submission is not required. There will be a wiki page to keep track of requirements for space and other resources. Simply start considering already now what you would like to make, bring or show, and write it down once the wiki goes online. We are open to crazy and surprising stuff.

For Assemblies

Assemblies are places where communities around a certain interest can meet, talk, exchange ideas and be inspired. Assemblies play a huge part in creating the special „congress atmosphere“. They are comparable to villages at the Chaos Communication Camp. The assemblies are organized in the public wiki.

This license allows commercial use of excerpts by media institutions as part of their reporting. If you do not wish for material from your lecture to be published or streamed, please let us know in your submission.

Note: As German law (and therefore the license) might differ from the law of your country, please let us know if you should have any issues or questions regarding the exact implications. Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee a perfect translation.

Travel, costs & visa

The Chaos Communication Congress is a non-commercial event where neither the organisers nor the speakers are being paid. As a speaker you get free admission though. If necessary, we are able to provide limited support for travel costs and accommodation. If you need help applying for a visa, such as an official invitation to present to the German embassy, please let the content team know well in advance. Please be aware that the visa application procedure may take up to six weeks.

Dates & deadlines

27|28|29|30 December 2012, CCH, Hamburg, Germany

The Event

The Chaos Communication Congress is an annual four-day conference organized by the Chaos Computer Club (CCC). First held in 1984, it has since established itself as “The European Hacker Conference” attracting a diverse audience of thousands of hackers, scientists, artists, and practical utopists from all around the world.

29C3 will be an entirely new Congress experience. The location will change to the city of Hamburg in northern Germany to provide a large venue to the growing number of enthusiastic participants of the Congress who have always been much more than just visitors. Expect a spirit more similar to that of outdoor hacking events like the CCC Camp, just indoors. There will be room for all kind of fun activities, smaller informal talks and workshops, more permanent installations and way more options to relax and socialise. To make this happen, we offer lots of space for groups to set up installations, project demonstrations, small workshops and come together in a village-style setting like you know it from the CCC Camps.

Keeping that in mind, we invite you to send us proposals for talks, lectures and workshops on all topics of relevance, also bring your installations and projects. The following areas are of particular interest:

Hackers as the digital armourer for the coming cyberwars?

Ethical responsibility of exceptional talents and powers

Dancing with the devil – funding models for research and development, risks and ethical dilemmata

Mobile Device Hacking and Telecommunications Security, Security of Apps

Privacy enhancing technologies – next generation anonymity systems, filesharing security, overlay networks, encryption

Privacy in the age of Big Data – policy options, power questions and new human rights

Net and device neutrality – ownership, censorship, circumvention and the politics of de-facto standards, search engine politics

Novel Exploitation Techniques for all kind of technology

Programming languages — state of the art and research

Future or no future of IT security – state of fail, new concepts and methods, implications for society and infrastructure

Retrocomputing, Video Game Culture and Art

Molecular cuisine and kitchen hacks

Energy – concepts for a future world with scarce and expensive energy resources

Robotics – humanoid, football playing, autonomous vehicles, (armed) drones, ethics, utopias and dystopias

Hacker Space Program, Space Travel and Satellites – technology, goals and ethics

Submission Guidelines

For Talks, Lectures and Workshops:

Please try to submit a meaningful and complete description that tells us about your presentation. The description is all the content committee has to judge your submission by, so better be convincing. Quality, not size does matter. Sales and marketing droids are known to vanish without any trace at the congress, please refrain from submitting company or product propaganda. Also consider that other people may submit a talk on the same topic, so please indicate why your talk is special. Feel free to also include some facts about yourself and your motivation. We don’t care if your talk has already been held at a conference on the other side of the world, but please make sure your content is up-to-date.

Lectures should not exceed 45 minutes plus up to 15 minutes for questions and answers. Longer time slots are possible if we feel the topic demands it (please tell us if necessary). Due to the success at last year’s 28C3, there will also be slots for 20 minutes. Please state the length of your presentation clearly on your submission. There are also five-minute “lightning talk” slots for “I have written this cool thing”-announcements, “someone should do this”-rants and other brief contributions. Those are not reviewed by our content team, check the wiki-page beforehand.

For Projects, Installations and other fun stuff:

A formal submission is not required. There will be a Wiki with some guidelines on the data needed to plan for space and other requirements. Feel free to already start thinking about what you may want to bring, show or organize so you are ready when the Wiki goes online. There will be lots of space, so we are very open for crazy and surprising things to show up.

Language of the Presentation:

While the 29C3 is an international conference that aims to present lots of content in English, we would rather have a good presentation in German than a bad one in so-called Denglisch. So please be honest when judging your language skills and choose your lecture language accordingly. There is no language bias in judging the merit of submissions. There is a live-translation project that hopes to provide cross-translation for many lectures.

Publication:

Audio and video recordings of the lectures will be published online in various formats. All material will be available under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Germany License.
Note that this license allows for the commercial use of the content to allow media organisations to use snippets from lecture recordings for their reporting. If you wish to use alternatively a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 3.0 Germany License or if you require that your lecture is not recorded or streamed at all, please state this with your submission.
If you don’t tell us otherwise, audio and video of your lecture will be under Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Germany License.

Travel expenses:

The Chaos Communication Congress is a non-profit oriented event and speakers are not paid. However, financial help on travel expenses and accommodation is possible. It needs to be agreed upon after acceptance of the submission, though. Don’t be shy and state your requirements in the application when submitting your lecture and we’ll work something out.

Dates and Deadlines:

– September 30th, 2012 (23:59 UTC): Submission deadline
– November 15th, 2012: Final notification of acceptance
– December 27th – 30th, 2012: Chaos Communication Congress

Online Submissions only:

All talks, lecture and workshop proposals must be submitted online using our online lecture submission system at
https://cccv.pentabarf.org/submission/29C3.
Please follow the instructions given there. If you have any questions regarding your submission, feel free to contact us at 29c3-content(at)cccv.de
