DiVOC Push to Talk: Submit your session now!

tl;dr Interactive Online Event, September 4 to 6. CfP: Submissions, Wiki with all info: di.c3voc.de

During the past couple of months, we have increasingly moved our lives into cyberspace, where chaos is digitally distributed. We have gone on-line for events, streamed content and clicked on talk recordings.

There was lots of lecturing—now we are looking for more interaction: instead of just watching a stream, let’s go do cool stuff together!

From September 4-6 we will have the third Digitally Distributed Online Chaos, this time under the theme “Push to talk”.

The event will be streamed on media.ccc.de and participation is free of charge. As during the first DiVOC, the VOC is at the ready with their infrastructure to stream sessions from anywhere and enable participants to engage in exchange.

Now we want to fill the program with talks, ideas, discussion panels, art performances or other submissions! With slots of up to 75 minutes, we can try new and more interactive things.

There is also space for shorter pitches: in slots of 15 minutes, let’s experiment with interfaces of all sorts, tell each other about interesting discoveries, present exciting projects, and extend invitations to self-organised sessions, or do crazy things we might come up with.

We are collecting the proposed submissions here until August 14th.

For any questions about the implementation we are happy to help via e-mail.

Additionally, Digitally Distributed Online Chaos truly comes alive through self-organised sessions and impromptu flashes of inspiration!

In the wiki for the “Push to Talk” event, we provide all the details, including communication channels to fellow chaos creatures, and we will publish the schedule in time before the event.
@diC3voc@twitter.com and @dic3voc@chaos.social in the fediverse are keeping us posted about current developments.

So let’s go, and be excellent to each other!

Hidden Service – A Digital Distributed Online-Chaos

TL;DR On April 11th und 12th, we’re doing a *Digital Distributed Online-Chaos* with many talks. More info at https://di.c3voc.de/en:start

April 2020, the hackerspaces in all of Germany are closed, and all events cancelled. Chaos is disappearing from shared spaces, workshops and craft corners, and retreats into the living room. The community can only stay visible through the hidden heroes of Chaos: the infrastructure. Mostly ignored and assumed to be a given, the decentralized, non-commercial, and tracking-free services allow Chaos to continue to be Chaos. These otherwise hidden services become more visible than ever. Video and audio conference systems allow hackspaces to be transferred to the virtual realm; pads, gits, and wikis enable us to continue to work together. It’s time to stay home, but no time to go into hiding.

We believe that our events can be run like this too, and want to try a digital distributed online Chaos. At least you should not be left alone over Easter! So we’re hiding an easter egg for you: on the 11th and 12th of April, we’re going to have the first Online Chaos – Hidden Services. The whole event will be streamed at https://media.ccc.de. All information and the schedule Fahrplan will be published shortly at https://di.c3voc.de/en:start and on Twitter @dic3voc and in the Fediverse at @dic3voc@chaos.social.

Together with the VOC, we have designed an infrastructure that allows speakers to stream their talk from home, or pre-record it. Viewers can ask questions, and heralds will accompany the talks. The schedule Fahrplan will be online soon, but you can already register your own self-organised session https://di.c3voc.de/sessions-liste.

All talks will be presented in German. Through the services of the c3lingo team, many of them will be translated into English, and maybe even additional languages. Check the schedule for the details. For the best experience listening to the translation, you should install a Mumble client on your system. Please see https://wiki.c3lingo.org/for-attendees for further details.

Let’s create a distributed conference together and learn a lot—not just for now, but for times to come.

Dear Congress visitors and those who didn’t make it: Like in the previous years, the Video Operation Center will provide you with live streams and recordings of all main lecture halls (1, 2, G and 6) and the stage at Sendezentrum. As usual, you’ll find the video and audio streams at https://streaming.media.ccc.de and the recordings at https://media.ccc.de/c/32c3.
We also publish to our YouTube Channel “media.ccc.de” to cater to those with broken playback devices. We’ll continually be publishing the recordings there during Congress. Please avoid linking other channels which re-upload our work (with ads).

<a href="../../../../wp-content/uploads/2015/12/31c3-voc-jj-0773.jpg

Again, we’re happy to be able to bring you additional content: Audio from the “Podcaster-Tisch” (Podcasting-Table) of the Sendezentrum as well as music from the Chaos-West Assembly, the Lounge, the Anti-Error-Lounge and from the Dome on the roof of the CCH.

Like at the previous Congress and this year’s Camp, all videos will be produced and published in HD and we try hard to ensure the best image quality and correct metadata on the files. Thus, we ask you not to record the streams (or at least not to publish such recordings), as those do not live up to the standards we set for our recordings. For the time between a talk and when we publish the recording, you can use the Relive system. We wrote more on the topic of stream dumps in this blog post.

We also did some upgrades with the live subtitles. They should now work on more devices and also when watching the video stream in fullscreen mode. The subtitles team will focus this time exclusively on halls 1 and 2 and wants to cover those 100%. In both halls the live subtitles can be watched on two screens in the front rows as well as on an arbitrary device via a web frontend. For this Angels are still wanted, both for live transcription and as responsible contact person for a hall.

There are still various reasons to experience the Congress from a safe distance. Family, job, travel expenses or this year again, no ticket. We are very sorry but the capacity of the building is limited. But we invite all interested people to attend the 32C3 via Congress Everywhere. Watch the

streams, participate via twitter or IRC, celebrate your own Hackcenter experience, drink Tschunk, cook together and have a good time.

You can ask a question to a speaker via IRC or Twitter, you can listen the audio streams and the simultaneous translations via phone (also SIP). You can join the 32C3 network via VPN. You can dispatch a signal angel to an area in the CCH. For an online interactive coming together just use the IRC-channel #32C3-everywhere at hackint.

No 32C3 location in your city? Create a new Congress Everywhere space and add the location in the wiki. During 29C3 we had 34 places in 9 countries, last year even so 31. This year we are very happy to say hello to the already announced spaces in Graz (Austria), Antwerp (Belgium), Sofia (Bulgaria) and in Germany: Berlin, Bochum, Darmstadt, Düsseldorf, Erfurt, Freiburg, Heilbronn and Siegen.

The YouTube and stream dump problem

In the past the CCC has decided to not run its own YouTube account as we didn’t want to advertise this service. Despite the growing success and continual improvements to media.ccc.de as a streaming platform, people still want to watch CCC talks on YouTube. Unfortunately, many YouTube accounts have shown up which claim to be official CCC accounts. We ignored this for a long time as it was a nice service for the viewer and hey – it’s CC-BY content. However there are some problems with these accounts which we will address later.

To understand the problem we need to discuss another topic, stream dumps. In the past when the release of congress talks sometimes took a few days, stream dumps have been a nice way to watch a talk that you have missed before the final releases where available. But stream dumps have lower quality than the final releases – because the streams also have a lower quality for bandwidth reasons. They also have a watermark applied to show clearly that they are just stream dumps. Stream dumps often contain audio / video from breaks between the talks which can be anything from private conversations near an open mic to just noise.

To remove the need for stream dumps we have built a video on demand portal for your convenience and everything is now instantly available on our own video platform http://media.ccc.de/.

And here is the problem with the rogue CCC YouTube accounts: we politely ask every year for stream dumps to be removed; not only for the reasons above but also because the stream dumps miss the correct metadata, and are often published under the wrong license. This is also true for final releases that are published by these rogue CCC accounts. A look at the view counts of these stream dumps shows a huge number of people are watching ugly SD stream dumps from events that are available professionally edited in crystal-clear HD.

We recently learned about another problematic point: some of these accounts participate in the Youtube advertisement program, which means they display ads next to our videos. We do all of our work as a non-profit and want our viewers to get the content without ads and in case of media.ccc.de without any retention of their personal data. Running a YouTube account with high viewer counts and ads is basically profiting unfairly from content that is provided free of charge by our speakers, produced free of charge by the CCC orga team and brought to you free of charge by the video team.

To mitigate this we have decided to open an official media.ccc.de YouTube channel to at least make sure users don’t have to suffer advertisements, incorrect licenses and incomplete metadata. This account can be found on https://www.youtube.com/mediacccde.

As all attempts to contact the account owners have failed we ask you to not use these channels, feel free to leave a comment on the video that they need to get in touch with the CCC. From now on we will publish everything we are allowed to on YouTube so these accounts will have no reason to exist.

We are aware that we could have chosen a stricter license for the streams in order to have a stronger legal basis. We would very much like to avoid doing so. Due to the new Video-On-Demand feature it should no longer be required to publish stream dumps.

We strongly encourage you to use http://media.ccc.de/ or if you like a more simple view http://cdn.media.ccc.de/; and if you link to a video on your twitter / facebook / diaspora / you name it, think twice which platform is the best to watch a talk about ITSec, digital surveillance or building a rocket.

The VOC team
