GPN24: Update on financing, merchandise and call for participation

GPN24 is happening

Thanks to the fantastic support from the community, we are able to organise GPN again this year. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone whose donations have made this event possible. You can find the current status of the fundraising campaign at donate.gulas.ch. We have surpassed the €80,000 target, so GPN24 is now confirmed. We will invest any further support in making GPN even better, in future events and in the GPN storage.

All places for the event are already taken through registrations. On the day, we will still be offering a limited number of free day passes to visitors from the Karlsruhe area.

We will provide updates on the availability of day passes during the event at gulas.ch and on the Fediverse at @ampel@gulas.ch.

Order merch until the 29th of April – no sale at the event

Until April 29th, you still have the chance to order exclusive merchandise. For the first time, we are also sending out (limited) merchandise by post from the Gulasch headquarters, so you don’t necessarily have to collect your order at GPN24.

There will no longer be any on-the-spot sales at the event; this year, merchandise can only be purchased via binding orders.

Trolling at GPN24

If you’d like to troll – that’s what we call helping out – you can register now in the Troll System at troll.gulas.ch and become a stakeholder. The most active trolls will also receive a goodie featuring great GPN24 design and the chance to register early for the next GPN. Please don’t forget to tick the relevant box in the Troll System.

Talks, workshops and music

Proposals for talks and workshops can be sent in via Pretalx at cfp.gulas.ch/gpn24/cfp until 26 April. Help promote the event, showcase your skills and gain experience. If you know anyone you’d love to see as a speaker at GPN, feel free to get involved and let them know about this call for submissions!

Talks are usually recorded and posted online at media.ccc.de; you can opt out at any time.

You can submit entries for the lounge via cfp.gulas.ch/gpn24-lounge/cfp by 19 April to enhance the GPN with your music or visuals, creating endless added value.

TL;DR:

GPN is an open, donation-funded community event where you can hack together, eat goulash, watch lectures, and more. As with the last GPN, registration is required.

€80,000 – Help us reach this fundraising goal. The GPN is made possible primarily by you and your donations. We need every donation (including yours!) to continue celebrating Goulash Programming Night in the future!

Contrary to our expectations, the GPN has failed to break even in recent years. This year, we need about €80,000 in donations to make GPN24 and future events possible. Registration fees will not cover the costs of the event.

The event only works because, in addition to your donation, you also contribute as a participant, be it by helping with various tasks (“trolling”) or submitting lectures/workshops/meet-ups (click here for the CfP).

About GPN

As one of the largest Chaos events, Gulaschprogrammiernacht (GPN for short) offers our participants many opportunities to exchange ideas, gather new impressions, and simply have a great time. To this end, we organize a wide range of lectures, workshops, and music, we set up a large hack center with space for art and crafts, and produce large quantities of Tschunk and, of course, goulash.

Be part of these magical four days, regardless of whether you’ve always been involved in Chaos or have no idea what to expect.

This year, you’re not just the participants that make this event possible, you’re also taking on the role of valued stakeholders of GPN24.de, the super corporation that can do everything. All at the same time!

From long-distance goulash pallet transport to remote data transmission – we no longer just hide the patterns, we’ve productized them, labelled them, and squeezed them into 24-hour service cycles. We invite you to dive deep into this hypercapitalism, ride the flood of information, and examine critically: Do we really need an AI DLC for everything … oh wait, a domain? (Spoiler: Yes!)

In a world of information overload, we offer you the logical synthesis: Everything about everything, around the clock. We have optimized the right interface for every need:

First time at GPN?

Here you can watch presentations, participate in workshops, bring your own project, hack, help out, dance to music and visuals in the lounge, get coffee, mate, or Tschunk at the bar, eat goulash and other delicacies, meet and reconnect with people, collect stickers, and much more. At https://gulas.ch/ you will find information about how the event works, with links to further wiki pages on various topics. If you register there, you will receive the latest information by email before and during the event. We always welcome new people and try to create an open atmosphere in which everyone feels comfortable.

Registration

This year, registration for GPN will again be necessary to avoid overcrowding. To allow spontaneous visits to GPN, there will again be a small number of day passes available on site (while supplies last).

Registration and day passes serve to ensure that we do not exceed the capacity limits of the building.

When registering, you can still pre-order T-shirts, mugs, etc. as usual. As you have probably read already, we rely on your donations during registration.

Registration & voucher

To ensure that all slots are filled, we have linked registration to a €10 voucher. It can be used freely at the GPN. This does not constitute admission, but is intended to ensure that registrations are actually used (or cancelled).

Registration without purchasing the voucher is not possible.

If you cancel your registration by June 3, 23:59 CEST (end of day 0), the voucher will be refunded. This will allow another person to attend the GPN.

If you would like to attend the 24th Gulaschprogrammiernacht but are unable to purchase a voucher, please contact us at friends@gulas.ch. If your presentation submission is accepted in the CfP, your registration is guaranteed.

Trolls who helped out sufficiently last year will receive a guaranteed registration if it is redeemed by March 28 at the latest. Before the first registration date, an email will be sent to everyone who gave us their consent last year. For trolls, registration is also possible outside the registration periods.

Day passes

The free day passes are for anyone who only wants to visit GPN for one day or who finds out about GPN spontaneously. Those travelling from further away should not rely on day passes being available, as these are primarily intended for interested persons from Karlsruhe.

There is only a limited number of day passes available. We will provide information on the availability of day passes during the event at https://gulas.ch/ and in the Fediverse at @gulasch@gulas.ch.

Children and minors

Children and minors up to (and including) the age of 16 years can be added to a registration free of charge.

Registration dates

For registration (including purchase of the voucher), we will release quotas at join.gulas.ch at the following times:

Monday, 23 March 2026, 20:00 (CET = UTC+0100)
Sunday, 29 March 2026, 15:00 (CEST = UTC+0200 – including waiting list)

Unpaid or cancelled registrations will be re-released, so it may be possible to register between the dates – a waiting list will be opened immediately after the last date.

Financing the GPN

You’re probably wondering where the figure of €80,000 comes from.

An event with over 2,500 participants adds up to quite a lot. From transport trucks to earplugs to the most comfortable beer benches in chaos. And much more.

Of course, we sell your beloved waffles, goulash, and the best Tschunk. However, we do this not to make money, but because it is part of the GPN. We cannot finance our event from this, as we want to keep prices low and also have to pay taxes on it.

We want to maintain an open & inclusive GPN with the lowest possible prices.

Your donations, on the other hand, go fully towards the event, and you can also claim them in your tax statement.

Those who can donate more invite someone else to the GPN.

The current progress of the fundraising campaign is visible at donate.gulas.ch. If we do not reach our donation goal, we will probably have to cancel the GPN entirely. In that case, we would refund the vouchers and donations for the GPN. If you would like us to use the donations for other charitable purposes at Entropia, please indicate this.

Lectures and workshops

We want to offer an interesting workshop and lecture programme at the GPN again – for this we need you and your topics! We look forward to talks on a wide range of topics and a broad workshop programme for all participants.

You will soon be able to submit your suggestions in Pretalx at https://cfp.gulas.ch/gpn24/ until 26 April 2026, 23:59 CEST. If you know people who you would definitely like to see as speakers at the GPN, get active and let them know about this call for proposals!

Do you do art or a performance? Bring it to the GPN on the stages of ZKM & HfG Karlsruhe!

Share your ideas, projects, research, art, or other interesting topics in a talk or workshop during the GPN.

The GPN is hosted at the ZKM (Center for Art and Media) and the HfG (Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design) – a perfect place to combine art and hacking!

Would you like to get creative at the GPN and embellish the event or exhibit your art project? If it is a smaller project, just bring it with you! Anything that does not fit on a small table, needs to be hung up or has special requirements (electricity, internet, etc.)? We will be happy to work with you to make it possible. Trolling

Like all other Chaos events, GPN only works thanks to the energetic efforts of many helpers who keep everything running smoothly, from the info desk to the kitchen to the livestreams. If you want to troll – that’s what we call helping – you will soon be able to register in the troll system. The troll cave is the place to go for those of you who habitually seek out the Heaven. The most active trolls will of course receive a goodie with the GPN24 motif and will have the opportunity to register early for the next GPN. Please don’t forget to check the appropriate box in the troll system. No special prior knowledge is necessary; if needed, there will be an introduction to the respective task or a talk introducing trolling.

Mini FAQ

“How much does a ticket cost?” – There are no tickets.
- When you register for the GPN, you must also purchase a €10 voucher (redeemable at the kitchen and bar). This ensures that registrations are actually used.
- If you are unable to purchase the voucher, please contact friends@gulas.ch and we will find a solution.
- We still rely on your donations; we cannot finance the GPN with the registration package alone. A total of approximately €80,000 in donations is needed to cover the costs of the GPN. You can donate during the registration process.
What happens if I can’t come after all?
- It would be sad if you can’t come to the GPN. You can transfer your registration to someone else or cancel it.
- You will receive a refund for the voucher if you cancel your registration by the day before the event, which makes your registration available to others.
But I only want to attend the GPN on Saturday!
- Day passes are available on site. The availability of day passes will be indicated on the start page at gulas.ch.
Why no tickets?
- An event with tickets is simply not possible in our circumstances.
- We run the event in parallel with university and museum operations, which also brings us great financial benefits.
- Likewise, spontaneous visits with day passes and the open nature of the event would no longer be possible.
- The purpose of the €10 voucher is solely to prevent abuse of the (otherwise free) registration and to enable as many of you as possible to participate.
What are trolls?
- That’s what we call our helpers, comparable to the angels at other Chaos events. Come and troll with us!
Why are you asking for donations so aggressively this year?
- We have made a net loss in recent years, and the existence of the GPN is at stake.

About the GPN

The Gulaschprogrammiernacht (GPN for short) has almost everything a hacker’s heart desires: lectures, workshops, a demo show, colorful lights, art, music, a large hack center, Karlsruhe’s annual supply of mate and tschunk, an epic lounge, a wonderful lawn and of course: goulash!

For four days, there will be hacking, presenting, tinkering and discussing. Everyone is welcome: whether you’ve always been part of the chaos or have no idea what to expect – just come along!

Did you notice the hidden patterns? We didn’t while writing. But: Huge patterns of data often conceal fascinating structures, waiting to be revealed. It is time to decrypt those patterns and decrypt their stories. Our motto this year is “Hidden Patterns”.

Let’s go on a data journey together and dive deep into the hidden patterns. Each recognised pattern could be the key to even deeper connections and the next level of hidden information. We should however always be mindful and respectful of the data we analyse.

Registration

You might have noticed that it has become increasingly crowded at GPN in recent years. That’s why, after consultation with our hosts, we unfortunately have to limit the number of participants for the event. If you want a guaranteed place to participate in all days of the GPN, you must register in advance. There is a small contingent of free day passes available for those who decide at short notice or are curious to visit on an individual day. These passes can be collected on site. In contrast to the previous GPNs, registration is now mandatory if you don’t want to rely on the availability of day passes.

This only applies to access to the buildings; you can use the outdoor area without registering.

When you register, you can still reserve T-shirts, mugs, etc. as usual. From this year on you can donate during your registration.

Goulash Indulgence Package

We have to limit the number of participants as we are reaching our spatial limits. We don’t want to charge admission, but at the same time we want to ensure that reservations are taken or cancelled in good time – so that every place can be used effectively. Therefore, from this year, registration is linked to the purchase of a Goulash Indulgence Package for €10 and includes a hot main course from our fantastic kitchen crew and a non-alcoholic drink at our bar. Alternatively, you can choose three waffles instead of the hot main course.

The package is intended to motivate you to cancel your registration and make room for someone else if you are unable to attend. If you cancel by 18 June, 23:59 (end of day 0), the package will be fully refunded. So please be fair when registering and only register if you are actually going to attend.

The bundling of the registration with the Goulash Indulgence Package is not an admission fee and is not a replacement for your donations, on which we still depend.

If you would like to participate in the 23rd Gulaschprogrammiernacht but are unable to purchase a Goulash Indulgence Package, please contact friends@gulas.ch. If your submission is accepted in the CfP, your registration is guaranteed.

Day passes

The day passes are for all those who only want to visit the GPN for one day or who spontaneously learn about the GPN. Those travelling from further afield should not rely on day passes being available, as these are intended for interested parties from Karlsruhe.

There is only a limited contingent of day passes. We will provide information on the availability of day passes during the event at https://gulas.ch and in the Fediverse at @gulasch@gulas.ch.

Children and young people

Children and young people aged up to (and including) 16 years can be added to a registration for free.

Opening of registration

The registration will open on Sunday, 27 April at 20:00. On 1 May at 14:00, further places will be made available in a second round. You can also reserve merch outside the registration periods: https://join.gulas.ch/

Unpaid or cancelled registrations will be released, so you might get lucky and be able to register between these dates.

Donation

Mini-FAQ

In return, you will receive the Goulash Indulgence Package (a warm main course or three waffles from our waffle crew and a non-alcoholic cold drink – exactly what you need for a successful GPN). Registration

The Gulaschprogrammiernacht is an open event for everyone. However, prior registration is desired so that the organizers can better prepare for the number of visitors and buy enough ingredients for the famous goulash. During registration, you will also have the opportunity to reserve merchandise until 12 April 2024 – this is the only way to ensure that sufficient quantities of all sizes are available. Furthermore, a donation is requested from visitors who are able to do so.The recommended donation this year is €42. If you have the possibility to donate more, you invite someone else to GPN. If you want to troll us, that is what we call helping around here, you can register now in the troll system. The troll cave is also the place to go for those of you who are looking for the heaven. The most active trolls will of course receive a GPN22-themed goodie! No special previous knowledge is required, but if necessary, you will be able to attend a “Troll Introduction”. We are still working on getting the Trollsystem up and running, you will be able to register shortly.

You will find anything the hearts of hackers and haecksen long for at the Gulaschprogrammiernacht: talks, workshops, a demo show, blinkenlights, a big hackcenter, Karlsruhe’s yearly supply of mate and Tschunk, an epic lounge, a wonderful lava meadow, and of course … wonderful goulash! As always, four days of hacking, lecturing, tinkering, and discussing await you. Everybody is welcome, from the usual suspects to the (as of yet) inexperienced first-timers.

Lectures and workshops

The amount of talks and workshops that are going to be held is completely up to you, as is their content! We are looking forward to a wide range of topics for talks and workshops aimed at all participants. You can submit your very own proposals through Pretalx. If you do not want to get up on stage yourself, but know people you would enjoy to see as speakers at the GPN, please forward this call for participation to them. Remember to make your presentations and workshops as accessible and understandable as possible. Presentations will be recorded by default and posted online at media.ccc.de, opt-out is possible at any time.

“lack (noun, singular/uncountable) A situation in which you do not have any, or enough, of something that you need or want.” (from: Macmillan Dictionary) The increasing lack of computer chips puts all of us electronic machines wielding people in a difficult place: On the one hand, we wish to source cheap hardware, on the other hand we strive for better supply chains so as to not aggravate the environment’s condition any further. In call, switching to alternatives that serve both goals is an inevitable development. Notably, open-source based projects have proven to ameliorate our society, even if the majority of people are unaware of this manner of collaboration. It is our responsibility to rethink, redraft, and rebuild our prior designs and come up with solutions suited to current challenges. Raise a Mate to more affordable and sustainable hardware—let us develop ch(ea|i)p alternatives!

We would very much like to encourage you to hand in talks, even if you consider yourself an inexperienced speaker. Should you be in need of any help, simply reach out to us and we will provide you with assistance as best as we can!

Trolling

The GPN, like all other Chaos events, is only possible thanks to the energetic efforts of many helpers who keep everything running, from the info desk to the live-streams. If you want to lend a hand, you can pre-register starting now by joining troll system. Those amongst the most diligent and active will receive a thank you in form of our iconic bowl with the GPN21 design—an item reserved exclusively for helpers. But that is not all: Let us surprise you with other goodies as well. For certain specialised activities, newcomers will be receive a brief introduction, so that no previous knowledge or special qualifications are necessary even for the fanciest of shifts.

This GPN will take place under new and special conditions. Probably we will have some clarity of the actual local regulations regarding the COVID19 pandemic at some point in April 2022.The regulations of the state of Baden-Württemberg are decisive for us.

The Gulaschprogrammiernacht has everything for the discerning hacker: Talks, workshops, demoshow, flashing lights, lots of music (always both too loud and too quiet), two (!!!) hackcenters, enough Mate for all of us (some say it’s the years stock for Karlsruhe), tons of Tschunk, an epic lounge, and a fantastic outside lava-lawn (*lava not included). Oh, and as always: yummy goulash in a meaty and vegan edition. Once again, this is your chance for four days of collective hacking, talking, socializing, and chilling till the bytes come home. Everyone is welcome, from the ‘usual suspects’ to newbies as well as all other interested parties.

Talks/Workshops

The amount and quality of talks and workshops at the GPN depends on you! We are eager to hear about your submissions on all kinds of topics for all the different attendees. You can submit your talks and workshops at our Pretalx cfp.gulas.ch. If you don’t feel up to the task yourself but know of people you would love to see at the GPN, please talk to them and refer them to this call for participation and cfp.gulas.ch.

Please keep in mind that this event is attended by a wide range of people that may not be as well versed in your area of expertise as perhaps at a specialized conference. Please also try to make your talks accessible to the widest range of audience possible.

The talks will be recorded by the C3VOC and published on media.ccc.de. As a speaker, you can of course opt out of being recorded at any time.

Trolling

Like all other Chaos events, the GPN only works thanks to the help of many volunteers that keep everything running, from the info desk to the livestreams. Whoever wants to lend a hand is encouraged to do so and can (soon) register with the Trollsystem troll.gulas.ch.

While most tasks can be done by anyone, training for particular tasks will be provided to those who need it.

“Why should I register if there are no tickets?” – We need some preliminary data to estimate how many chairs and tables to book, how much Mate and ingredients for goulash to buy. Textiles and other merchandise have to be preordered during registration. You are of course free to come to the GPN without prior registration, even though it would be extremely helpful for our planning and other preparations.

Hello to all of you out there on the internet,

it was nice seeing so many of you at the 33C3, but for those who couldn’t make it or who haven’t had enough: The party continues in May.

GPN17 2017-05-25 – 2017-05-28 in Karlsruhe, Europe, Earth

In order to enable more of you to be able to come to us, we have moved the GPN to Ascension Day this year. In addition, we are looking to provide affordable accommodation for you.

The Gulaschprogrammiernacht has everything: Lectures, workshops, a big hackcenter, mate and tschunk, an epic lounge and the lava meadow. Of course, there will also be goulash – both with meat and as a vegan alternative. We welcome everybody, from the “usual suspects” to the wholly inexperienced.

This year there’s something new! We’ve developed an electronic badge as you may already know it from past events. The GulaschPushNotifier is an versatile IoT-Device. You can preorder it together with the t-shirts.

Works for me! But does it work as intended? What protects the code, the infrastructure and the applications we build from being used unethically? Whether it’s about Dual Use or simple misappropriation: Can we simply continue hacking without worrying about those possibilities? We are curious what you think and look forward to spirited discussions about a topic that gets harder and harder to avoid in an age of telltale social networks, internet-destroying toasters and robots designed to kill.

How many lectures and workshops will there be and how interesting will they be? Well, that depends on you! We look forward to lectures on a multitude of topics relevant to hacking and a jumble of workshops for all participants. You can submit your ideas in Frab. If you don’t want to submit a lecture yourself but know folks who might, please get in touch with them and tell them about our call for participation. We ask all contributors to kindly read our guidelines on inclusion and behavior and on accessibility. This greatly helps creating the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere that makes the GPN so awesome. The CCC VOC will be recording all lectures by default, but you can opt out at any time.
