The time has finally come: We want to invite you to the 21st Gulaschprogrammiernacht!

You will find anything the hearts of hackers and haecksen long for at the Gulaschprogrammiernacht: talks, workshops, a demo show, blinkenlights, a big hackcenter, Karlsruhe’s yearly supply of mate and Tschunk, an epic lounge, a wonderful lava meadow, and of course … wonderful goulash! As always, four days of hacking, lecturing, tinkering, and discussing await you. Everybody is welcome, from the usual suspects to the (as of yet) inexperienced first-timers.

Lectures and workshops

The amount of talks and workshops that are going to be held is completely up to you, as is their content! We are looking forward to a wide range of topics for talks and workshops aimed at all participants. You can submit your very own proposals through Pretalx. If you do not want to get up on stage yourself, but know people you would enjoy to see as speakers at the GPN, please forward this call for participation to them. Remember to make your presentations and workshops as accessible and understandable as possible. Presentations will be recorded by default and posted online at media.ccc.de, opt-out is possible at any time.

“lack (noun, singular/uncountable) A situation in which you do not have any, or enough, of something that you need or want.” (from: Macmillan Dictionary) The increasing lack of computer chips puts all of us electronic machines wielding people in a difficult place: On the one hand, we wish to source cheap hardware, on the other hand we strive for better supply chains so as to not aggravate the environment’s condition any further. In call, switching to alternatives that serve both goals is an inevitable development. Notably, open-source based projects have proven to ameliorate our society, even if the majority of people are unaware of this manner of collaboration. It is our responsibility to rethink, redraft, and rebuild our prior designs and come up with solutions suited to current challenges. Raise a Mate to more affordable and sustainable hardware—let us develop ch(ea|i)p alternatives!

We would very much like to encourage you to hand in talks, even if you consider yourself an inexperienced speaker. Should you be in need of any help, simply reach out to us and we will provide you with assistance as best as we can!

Trolling

The GPN, like all other Chaos events, is only possible thanks to the energetic efforts of many helpers who keep everything running, from the info desk to the live-streams. If you want to lend a hand, you can pre-register starting now by joining troll system. Those amongst the most diligent and active will receive a thank you in form of our iconic bowl with the GPN21 design—an item reserved exclusively for helpers. But that is not all: Let us surprise you with other goodies as well. For certain specialised activities, newcomers will be receive a brief introduction, so that no previous knowledge or special qualifications are necessary even for the fanciest of shifts.

Mini-FAQ

“How much is a ticket?” — There are no tickets and admission is free. GPN is donor-funded and prices for drinks and food are deliberately kept as low as possible. We rely on your donations to make this year’s (and any further) event a reality.
“Why should I register?” — It helps us plan how many chairs, tables, goulash, and tschunk ingredients we have to provide for. Textile swag must be reserved at the time of registration. Also, by registering, you will get a free public transport ticket for the duration of the event.
“What are trolls?” — That is the name of our helpers, comparable to “angels” at other chaos events. Come by and be a troll!
“I have other questions!” — If you have not found your answer in our detailed FAQ, drop us a message.

You have been eagerly awaiting it, a few panic-stricken inquiries have already reached us. Now the time has finally come: We want to invite you - one week earlier than usual - to the 20th Gulaschprogrammiernacht!

Save the date: 19.05. - 22.05.2022 at HfG and ZKM, Lorenzstr. 15, 76135 Karlsruhe, Baden, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Europe, Earth, Sun, α-Quadrant, Milky Way, Laniakea.

This GPN will take place under new and special conditions. Probably we will have some clarity of the actual local regulations regarding the COVID19 pandemic at some point in April 2022.The regulations of the state of Baden-Württemberg are decisive for us.

For four days there will be hacking, lecturing, tinkering and discussing again that ones and zeros will fly. Everyone’s welcome, from the usual suspects to the (still) inexperienced and firsttimers.

The Gulaschprogrammiernacht has everything for the discerning hacker: Talks, workshops, demoshow, flashing lights, lots of music (always both too loud and too quiet), two (!!!) hackcenters, enough Mate for all of us (some say it’s the years stock for Karlsruhe), tons of Tschunk, an epic lounge, and a fantastic outside lava-lawn (*lava not included). Oh, and as always: yummy goulash in a meaty and vegan edition. Once again, this is your chance for four days of collective hacking, talking, socializing, and chilling till the bytes come home. Everyone is welcome, from the ‘usual suspects’ to newbies as well as all other interested parties.

Talks/Workshops

The amount and quality of talks and workshops at the GPN depends on you! We are eager to hear about your submissions on all kinds of topics for all the different attendees. You can submit your talks and workshops at our Pretalx cfp.gulas.ch. If you don’t feel up to the task yourself but know of people you would love to see at the GPN, please talk to them and refer them to this call for participation and cfp.gulas.ch.

Please keep in mind that this event is attended by a wide range of people that may not be as well versed in your area of expertise as perhaps at a specialized conference. Please also try to make your talks accessible to the widest range of audience possible.

The talks will be recorded by the C3VOC and published on media.ccc.de. As a speaker, you can of course opt out of being recorded at any time.

Trolling

Like all other Chaos events, the GPN only works thanks to the help of many volunteers that keep everything running, from the info desk to the livestreams. Whoever wants to lend a hand is encouraged to do so and can (soon) register with the Trollsystem troll.gulas.ch.

While most tasks can be done by anyone, training for particular tasks will be provided to those who need it.

“How much does a ticket cost?” – There are no tickets and admission is free. The GPN is funded by your contributions, the prices for food and drinks are kept low. To finance further iterations of the GPN, we rely on and kindly ask for your donations.
“Why should I register if there are no tickets?” – We need some preliminary data to estimate how many chairs and tables to book, how much Mate and ingredients for goulash to buy. Textiles and other merchandise have to be preordered during registration. You are of course free to come to the GPN without prior registration, even though it would be extremely helpful for our planning and other preparations.
“What are trolls?” – Trolls are all people helping us run the GPN, they are very much the same thing as the angles at other chaos-events. Come to GPN and troll (with) us!
“Is there going to be a gym or other accommodations to sleep?” – Unfortunately, it was (and will) not (be) possible to organize a gym or other accommodations. If you need a place to sleep, have a look at the couch exchange in the Wiki entropia.de/GPN19:Unterkunft.
