Being an Angel at Chaos Communication Camp 2019

Hello fellow life form.
Let’s get it out of the way: We need lots of volunteers, especially for teardown. If you want to help, become an angel.

I want to help
That’s easy. You just need to register on Engelsystem and come to heaven on camp. You’ll find more details in our wiki.

I want to help with buildup
There are not as many different tasks during buildup, so please don’t arrive early without talking to us first. If you are resilient, love to to tackle even heavy work and want to arrive early for buildup please contact us at ticket@c3heaven.de so we’re able to plan for you accordingly. Be aware of the timeline.

I want to help during camp
Nice! Being an angel is one of the best opportunities to meet new people and look behind the scenes. There are many different tasks in the Engelsystem and you might join different teams on the “Angeltypes” page. There’s an overview of angeltypes. Questions will be answered by heaven in the Engelsystem and via email to ticket@c3heaven.de.

I want to help with teardown
To leave no traces we especially need angels after camp. Just stay a little longer and help with teardown.

What else is there to know?
We’ll be surrounded by nature, so plan and act accordingly.
Be aware of heat and the sun, drink more water and apply sunscreen.
This checklist might give you some pointers on what to consider.
There will be a tent only (no campers) heaven village, although we encourage you to prioritize populating other villages first.
For further and frequent questions monitor the “Ask the Heaven” page on Engelsystem.

We look forward to your contributions, projects, and participation as Camp is what you make of it. Without you, it would just be a pile of infrastructure right in the middle of nowhere. So let’s make the Camp into a Hackerevent worth remembering. See you.

Chaos Communication Congress moves to Leipzig

The 34th iteration of the annual Chaos Communication Congress (34C3) will again take place in December, but at a new location: the congress and convention center in Leipzig. Congress had to find a new home because its former venue, the Congress Center Hamburg (CCH), will be undergoing a general makeover. The new venue in Leipzig will provide participants much more space to tinker with.

The CCH was home to the Congress since 2012. Over the years, we developed a strong friendship with the team on site, so we’re sad we have to leave.

Finding a new location was not easy. The large number of participants combined with special demands regarding technology, lecture halls, workshop spaces – as well as areas to party and hang out – pose a challenge to any convention center in Germany. Even the CCH would not have been able to accommodate any more than last year’s 12.000 participants. „We’re not trying to grow at all costs, but expanding our cultural reach is very important to us. It’s always painful to be forced to reject more and more interested people at the door each year,“ explained Dirk Engling, CCC spokesperson.

With access not only to the main Congress Center Leipzig, but also to parts of the neighbouring convention halls, the CCC is confident to find the balance between a potential for moderate growth and a chance to maintain the event’s unique atmosphere. „Everything is on track for smooth cooperation, Dirk Engling said about the team in Leipzig. „After all, that city can look back on over 850 years of tradition hosting trade fairs.

As usual, the gates will be open for participants on December 27th. Despite the challenges of moving to a new location, our goal is to keep ticket prices stable. And of course, we’ll continue to resist commercialization. On one hand, the new location offers more space for some more participants. On the other, we’re going to need to depend more than ever on the solidarity of our community: By purchasing supporter tickets, one can directly enable others to attend at affordable rates. Just as last year, we’re aiming for a large black zero in profit. The start of presale is going to be announced at CCC’s events blog at https://events.ccc.de/.

Planning content for the 34C3 has already begun, and there will be a launch of the call for participation soon. „Hacker assemblies in the ‚Hackcenter‘ will be organized this year mainly around themes and interests rather by region. This should encourage even more interregional and international exchange between the communities, Dirk Engling explained. „And of couse, we’ll make every effort to tame the convention hall’s atmosphere and make it as cosy as our participants have come to expect over 33 years of congress history.“

The harbour tour “eye to eye with giants” takes you directly onto the container terminals of the second largest harbour in Europe. You will visit CTA (Container Terminal Altenwerder), with semi-automated container bridges and fully-automated transfer and storage of containers. The on-site container transport is done by fully-automated container transport vehicles. The only drawback is, you have to stay inside the tour bus.

St. Pauli Museum and Kiez Tour

Hamburg is famous for it’s amusement quarter around the Reeperbahn, commonly referred to as the “Kiez”. It is a colourful mix of clubbing and red light district, with a lot of history. Why not get that history told on a guided walk around the area and warm yourself up at the museum afterwards? Typical drinks for Hamburg included.

St. Pauli Museum and Bone Crypt

Would you have guessed that Hamburg has a bone crypt? Even most people living here don’t know about it, but it’s right in the middle of our amusement district St. Pauli, underneath a baroque church. Have a chill go down your spine while looking at those bones and learn about the only bone crypt in northern Germany, which was opened to the public just last year.

Are you able to speak English (and ideally also German) fluently in front of a large crowd?
You have a ticket or you are sure to get one? (This year we can not help you to get one if you are to late)
Be prepared – for the time being, you might be the face of the Congress!

We are in the process of building our team of Heralds in preparation for 33C3. We will use a similar process like last year. Before the Event, we will have a short Video call with you. Please be prepared to show us your stageskills with a short improvised moderation in front of your webcam.

What are Heralds? Heralds vocalize general announcements to the audience, manage the Q&A after the talks and – most importantly – introduce the speakers to the crowd. Like last year, we want Heralds to be able to focus solely on the speaker and the topic of the talk at hand.

We want you to be the best Heralds possible, so from now on, Heralds will not only be responsible for all the talks within a four hour time slot, you are also given the possibility to sign up early (read: now!), enabling you to prepare in advance of the Congress. We hope this will put Heralds less „on the spot“ and provide an even better Congress experience for everyone involved.

Mail us!
and answer the following questions :-)

– Realname
– Nickname
– Do you have a Ticket?
– Have you been Herold before? (When, on which Stages?)
– If not, what’s your motivation?
– Will you be there at the evening of Day0 (26.12.2016) for the introduction Meeting?
– What is your T-Shirt size?

If you feel up to the job, please send us an email with the above mentioned information to 33c3-herald(at)cccv.de.

Please do so until December, 6th, 2016!

More information about Heralds can be found in the 2015 wiki.

If you want to be a Stagemanager, attend the Stage manager Meetings from day0 – day3 in the evening. Shifts will be distributed for the following day on every meeting.

More information about Stage managers can be found in the 2015 wiki.

Best regards,
your Herold Team

Visiting the 32C3 and wondering what the city has to offer? Try one of our tours! Our goal is to show Hamburg to the visitors of the 32C3 like no other tour guide would. We’ve selected fascinating tours showing the behind the scenes of our most fascinating technology related sites.

Save a seat for a tour on our webpage.

Here’s a list of our tours (English and German):

DESY

If you’ve ever wanted to stand next to a particle accelerator, DESY is the place for you. One of Europe’s leading accelerator research centers, our tour will give you an idea of how particle physics and a host of other sciences are advancing with the help of scientists from all around the world. No special physics background necessary!

U-434

After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, more than 150 submarines have been decommissioned, the most in 1995. Only very rarely are they handed over by the Russian government, in consultation with the intelligence, into museum operations. As a spy submarine U-434 (Russian B-515) was used for special purpose secret spy missions off the east coast of the US and long patrols in the territorial waters of the Soviet Union.

MS Stubnitz

The MS Stubnitz is a large ex-fishing Vessel, made in the GDR and commissioned in 1964. She is one of the last examples of the shipbuilding-skills of the socialist countries and she remains mostly in her original configuration. She has been used for Fleet-fishing of herring.

During that times she was able to deep-freeze 60 tons of fish per day and to store nearly 2000m³ of deepfrozen fish. After the fall of the Wall, the MS Stubnitz was transformed into a cultural arche. The Cargoholds got emptied of fish-production machinery and were transformed into concert venues with an impressive soundsystem. The electromechanical main-engine, the bridge, the ship hospital, the enormous DC-system to freeze tons of fish and the radioroom remain unchanged and are still in original and working condition.

Miniatur Wunderland Backstage

Get an in-depth view of the internal wiring, decoders, computers etc. Explore the details of the ‚intelligent‘ car system and the process behind it. During the tour one of the guides will give you details on concepts, model building, construction and technology. You are encouraged to take photographs any time! Included in the price is a day-pass for the whole exhibition.

See you soon!

Fasten your seatbelts! We have a Fahrplan here. Like in the last years, we used many hours to review all the submissions, communicated with potential speakers, let you do the Halfnarp to avoid collisions – and now we have it!

There are still some slots which in fact are not free but just not publicly seen yet and thus do not appear in the first version of the Fahrplan.

See you all in Hamburg!

P.S. Just like in last years we created a naming scheme for the Fahrplan. Have fun figuring it out! :}

Not just because of tradition, but because we can: There will be a Camp in 2015 again!

After more than three thousand guests at the last Camp in 2011, we expect many outdoor enthusiasts, who like to hack during the day and marvel at the light displays at night and will celebrate the ultimate party in the middle of the festival season with us. Let’s just bring all the great experiences from the Congress out on the lawn and do all the experiments too dangerous for the halls of the CCH!

After an exhaustive search we found the perfect green field site for hackers of all kinds to build a camp with the most distinguished wood illuminators and musicians: the Ziegeleipark Mildenberg (brickyard Mildenberg), located idyllically between waterways, but still easily accessible. Don’t forget your swimming trunks and bikinis, because there is a bathing area right at the site: a truly beautiful swimming lake, just a few minutes walk away and well suited to fight the noble nerd paleness. But if you do not like swimming lakes: We will have the popular shower containers again! :}

Of course, we will put together an exciting talk program, which will be presented in two large tents, accommodating 800 and 1,200 people respectively. Moreover there is a park train system with three different track gauges, winding it’s way through the industrial scenery. There will also be a steam engine and a whole museum on machinery and tools used for brick-making.

Assemble in vacation travel groups! If you are free this summer, August 13th through 17th, we would like to invite you to come to the Chaos Communication Camp in Mildenberg. Where a hundred years ago the bricks were burnt for Berlin, we will set up our Camp. Bring your projects, ideas, space rockets and tents, of course. In return we will provide you with a DIY market near by, three brick bbq places and several bars to care for an appropriate environment to fraternize with others.

Tickets for all four days of the Chaos Communication Camp 2015 will be offered in a presale. The presale will be available in June the earliest. Right now the final price is uncertain, because the calculations are not finished yet. We aim to keep the price for the four day ticket below €200. Of course, people accompanying disabled people enjoy free admission. The Call for Participation for the camp program will be published on this webpage soon.

Save the date for a summer vacation with like-minded people, including working hand rail trollies and locomotives! Until then you might want to indulge yourself in some memories of the Camps in 2011 and 2007.

Experience the Congress the best way – join the angels!

What makes being an angel so special?
It’s the best way to meet new people. You will get to know a lot of people from the community in a short time, there are always other angels that can show you around and help you around Congress.

The Congress would not be possible without many people donating their time bringing the Congress to life and dealing with all the side effects of bringing thousands of hackers together in a congress center.

Since the very first Congress in 1984, everything is done by volunteers called ‘Angels’. In return, the angels get some quiet space in the famous ‘Heaven’ (which will be huge this year) including food and drink supply, a good feeling of helping out the CCC to rock the Congress and being part of the Congress experience. Without those great people, Congress wouldn’t be Congress. We are really proud of our supportive community and all the people that pitch in to help making the Congress overwhelming.

There are many ways to help during 29C3! Perhaps you want to be a part of setting up Congress or tearing it down? Or you can help out while the Congress takes place, e. g. you could be part of the video and streaming crew or run the cash desks, the infodesk, the network operations, be an signal angel or herald or even support us at the entrance. For more information please take a look at the wiki: https://events.ccc.de/congress/2012/wiki/Volunteers.

To become an angel, all you have to do is to register in the engelsystem where you can sign up for your favourite shifts, times and profession.

A big thank you to all angels for the good work and for keeping the congress running!
