All good things come to an end…

…even Camp. Our survey shows that almost half of you will depart on Sunday, many others on Monday. To make teardown as easy as possible for you, we made a plan.

Quick vehicle loading
From 10 am on, you can bring your luggage to Ziegeleipark parking lot (here) to load your car. An angel placed there will issue a permit.

Loading vehicles on site
From 3 pm on you can drive your vehicle on site to load it. Please be quick about loading and organize your stuff beforehand so that you can leave quickly. Team village (DECT ASSM / 2776) is on site and will issue a permit once you are ready.
There will be a one-way road system. Entrance on the campground is only possible at gate 3. To exit you will need to use gate 1.

Rented furniture
There will be 3 drop points for your rented furniture. Please see the map below for their locations. Return everything at once and cleaned. As we need to ship most of it on Monday, you would help us tremendously if you take care of that as soon as possible.

Wood, couches and trash
Tear down your wooden constructions, remove screws, nails, tape etc as well as possible and return it to the LOC with your couches (here).

Wood can be returned from 10 am on.

Take your trash to the bins and leave the area clean.

Please drive sober and carefully and have a save journey home. See you again next time.

Mobilfunk auf dem Camp

Good news everybody. There will be a mobile phone network at the camp.
We will setup a 2G/3G network and experiment with 4G as well.

Our network will support general data and voice services. The mobile
network will be connected to the POC, IOW it’s possible to call between
DECT and GSM numbers as usual.

Number registration is done via the guru UI.

Additionally we’re planning to add an interface to send and receive SMS
over HTTP. So you can create your own SMS-IRC gateway!

You will need to use a congress or camp SIM card to connect to our
network, so please bring your SIM cards from previous events, for
yourself and/or to share with your neighbours. We will only have a few
spare SIM cards to sell.

We’d like to make your travel to camp as smooth and relaxing as possible and have therefore in the following blog post done a detailed writeup of the different modes of travel to camp. A big thank you to everyone who took part in our survey! It’s been a great help.

Bassliner Shuttlebus from Berlin and Hamburg
Following a similar route to last Camp, we’ve organized shuttle services from Berlin and Hamburg. All tours will get you directly to Camp location and back after the event. There is no silly luggage restriction, as all buses come with luggage trailers.

One-way-tickets from Berlin are 13€ and Hamburg costs 23€. Detailed instructions and the booking system are on the bassline website: https://bassliner.org/reiseziel/ccc/.

IMPORTANT: The bus schedule is based on the feedback from the survey. More times can be added, should you’re ideal route not be in the list.

More Bassliners from your city and your time/date
Bassliner offers to do buses from all German cities at your requested date. Key requirement is that you have at least 25 people bindingly committed to the tour. We’ve created a wiki page to help you find 24 other people in your city. All other info can be found there.
IMPORTANT: Deadline for all extra tours is Saturday, the 10.08.2019 23:42 CEST.

By Train ..
As with every CCC Event, there is a DB Event ticket for the Camp.

If you are younger than 27, you may also use the DB Summerticket, which is only 99,60€. There are 4 journeys on it and you can add a detour to some friends or add a stop at the Verstehbahnhof.

.. to Gransee station continuing by public transport bus or shuttle bus to camp

The train station Gransee is being serviced hourly by the RE5 train from Berlin. From there a public transport bus (line 854) drives to Camp (Ziegeleipark) at 10:40, 11:40 and 12:40 daily.

We’ve organized an additional shuttle service, since 3 buses won’t provide enough capacity.
Tickets cost € 3,50. Times are:

on the 19.08. 16:00, 17:00 and 18:00
on the 20.08., 21.08. and 25.08.from 14:00 until 20:00 (min. 1 x / hour if needed more frequently)
on the 26.08. from 9:00 until 14:00 (min. 1 x / hour, if needed more frequently)

.. to Zehdenick station continuing by public transport bus to camp
You can check the buses (line 838) from Zehdenick station on the Brandenburg public transport website, which will get you straight to Camp (Ziegeleipark).

By CAR
The address for your sat nav can be found in the wiki.

Extrapolating the numbers from our survey, we expect about 2000 private cars! Please double check if Bassliner or public transport might be possible, as it saves parking spaces and helps our environment. Should you have spare space in your car, please consider adding it to the ride sharing/ hitchhiking wiki page!

Please be aware that no cars will be allowed to stay on the camp site and time and space for loading and unloading will be limited. We ask you to carry light luggage onto the event site. We’re trying to source some carts to help with moving luggage.

By bicycle
The Berlin – Kopenhagen long-distance cycling route runs past camp after ~97km from Berlin. The route is part of D11 as well as EuroVelo 7. The Berlin-Kopenhagen bike route is both scenic as well as separated from cars. It runs through forests and along the river Havel. The whole route is properly tarmacked and road bike friendly.

Anyone not keen on the full distance can take the tube to Oranienburg station. cycle along the B273 eastwards until you hit the Havel and then join the Berlin-Kopenhagen route for 42km.

Use more bandwidth and less Diesel!

Sunny fields, beautiful avenues, starry nights – and a refreshing dive in river Havel. This his how we all know and love our Chaos Communication Camp. But when 5.000 people go on vacation in uncharted territories, there are certain challenges for local infrastructure:
Energy and water supply are simply not designed for such a large number of people.

Energy

Although we try to save energy, our consumption will be higher than the local energy grid’s capacity. This ist why – just like last time – we have to rely on mobile diesel generators. These generators provide audible feedback on our energy consumption, inviting us to critically reflect it.

We would kindly ask everyone to do without large-scale energy consumers. In particular, please try to take a pass on refrigerators. Refrigerators use a lot of energy and thus lead to high costs. At the same time, each self-cooled beverage ist one less beverage sold at our bars. As a result, your self-cooled beverage harms our non-commercial event twice: Even though ticket prices are high, they do not cover all expenses, so we rely on returns from merchandise and beverage sales.

You will be able to smell every Watt-hour produced by the diesel generators. Every large scale consumer reduces our health and raises our costs. Cool kids save energy! A large bucket of water from river Havel is sufficient to cool drinks and packed foods for storage.

Water

Water is a finite resource, in particular when the water comes from a narrow water pipe. Please take short showers – not only for the sake of those waiting in line.

Sustainability

Besides lowering your energy consumption, there are many ways to contribute to a more sustainable camp:

Carpooling!
You’ll find options in our Wiki category “Hitchhiking”. In the Wiki, you will also find information on arriving by train, bus or bike.
Even if you’re not coming by bike, try to organize a bike to run your errands in the surrounding villages.
Buy regional groceries instead of bringing large supplies from far away.
CCC bars sell bottles with refundable deposit and will also refund you.
Bring re-usable dishes and cutlery!
Our teams C3GELB and C3 Sustainability will provide dishwashers to reduce disposable cutlery. By the way, heavy dishes are better than light plastic, which will only fly around in the dish washer.
Bring re-usable water bottles.
There will be several places to fill them.
Plan your village decoration so that you can re-use it at the next event.
Bring Solar modules for your own independent power supply.
Avoid trash and plan to take your own trash home after the event. This helps you monitor your trash production and lowers our disposal costs.

Being an Angel at Chaos Communication Camp 2019

Hello fellow life form.
Let’s get it out of the way: We need lots of volunteers, especially for teardown. If you want to help, become an angel.

I want to help
That’s easy. You just need to register on Engelsystem and come to heaven on camp. You’ll find more details in our wiki.

I want to help with buildup
There are not as many different tasks during buildup, so please don’t arrive early without talking to us first. If you are resilient, love to to tackle even heavy work and want to arrive early for buildup please contact us at ticket@c3heaven.de so we’re able to plan for you accordingly. Be aware of the timeline.

I want to help during camp
Nice! Being an angel is one of the best opportunities to meet new people and look behind the scenes. There are many different tasks in the Engelsystem and you might join different teams on the “Angeltypes” page. There’s an overview of angeltypes. Questions will be answered by heaven in the Engelsystem and via email to ticket@c3heaven.de.

I want to help with teardown
To leave no traces we especially need angels after camp. Just stay a little longer and help with teardown.

What else is there to know?
We’ll be surrounded by nature, so plan and act accordingly.
Be aware of heat and the sun, drink more water and apply sunscreen.
This checklist might give you some pointers on what to consider.
There will be a tent only (no campers) heaven village, although we encourage you to prioritize populating other villages first.
For further and frequent questions monitor the “Ask the Heaven” page on Engelsystem.

We look forward to your contributions, projects, and participation as Camp is what you make of it. Without you, it would just be a pile of infrastructure right in the middle of nowhere. So let’s make the Camp into a Hackerevent worth remembering. See you.

Chaosknoten Kit / Bausatz

In the past 16 years the BlinkenArea, has not only implemented light and media art installations. In addition, we have taught soldering and enabled access to microcontroller programming at several events. During the brainstorming what to do at Camp 2019, we realized that the official Logo of CCC, the “Chaosknoten“, does not exist yet as soldering kit. As Wau Holland has created the logo, we obtained permission to provide a Chaosknoten soldering kit from “Wau Holland Stiftung”. We just have to provide the hardware design and the firmware under a free license and are not allowed to make profit – which has anyways been our plan.

After getting the permission, we started working at the kit and less than a month later, there is a working prototype. The “Chaosknoten” consists of 42 LEDs, the printed circuit board and 6 other parts. The LEDs can be individually addressed and show 16 different brightness levels. The default firmware shows a few animations. The pins required for changing the firmware are available as pads on the back side of the board, so programming new animations is possible. A coin cell of type CR2032 supplies the power to the kit. It usually lasts for multiple days of operation until the LEDs do not light up any more.

For being able to estimate how many boards and parts we should order and to Camp 2019, we need your help. Based on our current calculations, we estimate the kit price to be ~~15 €~~ 10 €. As we usually receive a number of requests for complete devices (i.e. everything soldered already), we also did the estimation for this variant, which resulted in a price of 25 € for a completed device. There will be only one option for the color of the LEDs: these will be orange, because of the optimum the price performance ratio of those LEDs. ~~In case you would like to get a “Chaosknoten” kit or a completed “Chaosknoten”, please write an email to camp2019@blinkenarea.org.~~

For Camp 2019 there is a waitlist for kits not picked up by day 2 and/or if you want a pre-order for the 36C3, please write an email to camp2019@blinkenarea.org.

~~Please write us only how many kits / completed “Chaosknoten” you would like to get and if you want to reserve them bindingly.~~ We will keep reserved “Chaosknoten” until day 2 of the Camp. After this, they will be for sale to everybody. Please do not write wishes or questions in you email, we only want to count the number of “Chosknoten”. Feel free to post questions in the comments at the BlinkenArea blog post, so other people, who might have the same question, will be able to read the answer.

Wir sind in der Natur, deal with it

Hello camp visitors,

there is general camp planning going on for several weeks so far. Now we need information in terms of your villages in order to do concrete campsite planning. If you want to create some big stuff we need to know. You can find the contact details below in this post.
For your orientation we gathered some facts that are clear so far:

water:
The watersystem we build up for the camp is limited in its capacity and unfortunately won’t be very high due to local supply limitation. This means that we need to watch our water consumption a little bit. From the overall capacity we need to supply all of the sanitary and gastronomic infrastructure, e.g. the showers, dish washing stations, drinking water supply, heavens kitchen and so on. That means we cannot manage to supply running water in individual villages. So please plan to get water from the closest water station and find a workaround with water tanks. It’s also planned to limit the showering time to several hours a day to reduce the amount of water consumption.
Please be thrifty with the water and for example take a dip in the nearest lake instead of having a massive water fight on the campsite.

electricity:
As for the 2015 camp we will bring generators for the electricity supply because we can´t get enough power from the Ziegeleipark. As usual for a generator powered grid interruptions are possible.
It’s the same as for the water: please be thrifty and leave hungry consumers (e.g. old fridges or likewise) at home.
If you want to use your own solar power infrastructure to supply your village or if you are bringing big power consumers (>2kW) you necessarily need to speak to our power team (camp2019@c3power.de). Due to necessary fire protection, environmental and noise issues, please leave own generators at home. Nobody likes stinking two-stroke engine generators.

tents and buildings:
Due to safety reasons on the campsite you need to involve the village team in the planning of your village. If you want to bring big tents or build up something special, you need the village team’s permission. Tents for example are limited to the size of 75 square meters and must not have a second floor. Please don’t bring materials that are easily inflammable to build up your village. Cars and similar vehicles can not be parked in the villages.
Don’t dig holes and pits. There are several undocumented cables and pipes in the Ziegeleipark which are suspected to lie low under ground. The ground is not fun to dig in either. Also please don’t bring big pegs and don’t drive your tent pegs deeper in the ground than 20cm.
Please answer the village registration (https://signup.c3assemblies.de/) and speak about your plans. You also get the possibility to order tables, chairs, big tents and wood via the village team. Only register your planned village if you already got a ticket for the camp!

fire and cooking:
There definitely won’t be the possibility to have open fires or campfires on the campsite and the whole area due to fire safety. The same goes for barbeque grills on the campsite. As in 2015 there will a defined area where barbeque grills can be used. If you want to use a gas cooker make absolutely sure that it is based on some non inflammable ground and that it stands solidly and is not likely to fall over. The operation of a major village kitchen is only possible after permission of the village team.
Please be aware that the fire safety rules need to be adjusted if there is a change in weather oder dryness and can become stricter.

vehicles:
If you want to bring your vehicle please take care of the ground, yourself and the people nearby. The campsite won’t have a continuously bright illumination and a black dressed person or a pothole can easily be overlooked in the later evening. Please leave your battery powered vehicles at the chargers after dusk and please leave vehicles running on any kind of fuel at home. The noise and exhaust for other camp visitors exceed the individual fun. Also if your vehicle is leaking fuel it will damage the environment around.

water protection and environmental protection:
The Ziegeleipark Mildenberg is based in a water protection area (Wasserschutzgebiet). Please make sure that your cars, campers, motorcycles etc. are not leaking fuel.
Please leave any kind of chemicals at home. The opportunity of producing a new circuit board versus the possibility of damaging the closest drinking water reservoir is definitely not worth it.

music and noise:
If you bring PAs please limit the volume in sense of your neighbors on the campsite and outside the Ziegeleipark. Background music is totally fine in your village but constant party volume in some parts of the campsite was a problem in 2015 that we don´t want to have again.
There will be a major party area that is designed to produce a low noise level to the outside.

be excellent to each other:
In 2015 we got major complaints from neighbors outside the Ziegeleipark about noise, trash thrown in private gardens and damage to private property. We assume that this won´t happen again. Be excellent to each other!

dont forget your towel:
Have in mind that we are outside in the actual nature in midsummer. Bring sun protection, bring sunscreen, a big hat, create yourself some shady space. Have in mind to drink enough and also have in mind that in case of rain it can become quite muddy.
Bring a chair including a backrest and don’t forget your towel!
