Hello and welcome to post No 5 of the rC3 calendar!

Note: The second ticket batch is exhausted. Thank you so much for your overwhelming interest in this event! We hope you enjoy rC3.

This post has matured an extra day and comes out steaming hot! Sorry for keeping you hungry and waiting – we’re sure it’s worth it.

Today it’s all about culture, knowledge and their creators feat. the overall situation. We also have two surprise guests with a little something to share for those of you who would like to finally light it all on fire.

The Situation of Artists

As everyone has probably noticed by now, Corona has hit many industries hard. That’s why we would like to remind you that every year, countless artists, creative people and event technicians shape the Congress with us.

Year after year, they enrich the bland technology, electrical installations, trusses and partition walls with socially critical art installations and fascinatingly creative eye-catchers. Without them, Congress would be just a grey mass of cable-packed tables.

Hacking is art and art is hacking – where the two meet, we all learn and broaden our horizons. Whether it’s a VR experience about the experiences of pigs on their way to the slaughterhouse, a typewriter connected to the internet or an installation made of old metro display boards – they are all part of the manifold expressions and embodiments of chaos.

Art is open source, it doesn’t wear out, on the contrary, it gets better the more we engage with it.

If you can – or if you couldn’t buy a supporter ticket due to your location – please consider supporting artists in your area! Technology only ever reaches the state of the art.

Torch everything – with science!

Two people, known for their unique performance, we may bring home to you today. Nicolas Wöhrl and Reinhard Remfort, the producers of the podcast Methodisch inkorrekt! have managed to combine their craft, physics, with a knack for performance. After some iconic appearances at past Congresses, they have gone on tour in Germany with their stage show. Unfortunately, Corona makes no exceptions for people who could vividly instruct how to clean those hands and strap fabric correctly over people’s noses.

In addition to their glittering star career, the two of them still allow themselves a second life in academia, so there’s constantly new content for the old familiar podcasts and their new stream Optisch inkorrekt! For us, they have unpacked their camera to bring four little experiments to your home and to brighten up the darkest season of the year. We are looking forward to finally starting a fire with you – creatively in the spirit of science, of course!

Nicolas und Reinhard also included a short message:

Since “normal people” (TM) obviously light four ritual flames at the end of the year, we wanted to follow suit and did the same for you. Since we were not in Hall 1 this time either, but only in our own study rooms, we were also able to bypass the essential security measures and were thus not restricted in terms of content!
Stay well! See you at rC3 and hopefully next year again in persona.

The fine print: Please only light entities selectively and make sure you are in a fire-safe environment when recreating. No cats were harmed during the production of this video.

The video is in German. It shows

relighting a candle on its own fumes from a short distance

how to start a fire with a bubblegum wrapper and a battery

a tiny fire tornado using air circulation

a DIY fire breathing act using clubmoss spores

Everything is one. Except the 0.

In the coming year, a documentary film called “Alles ist Eins. Außer der 0.” will launch in German cinemas. The film by Klaus Maeck and Tanja Schwerdorf reflects on the (founding) history of the Chaos Computer Club and where we are today.

https://allesisteins.film/ (German content)

If you would like to know more about it, keep an eye out for the Fahrplan. There will certainly be one or two events on this topic ;)

Datenschleuder from the past

Following on from this, there is no cyber content to cringe and marvel at here like the last two weeks. Today’s throwback content is a bit more “analogue”. At least it can be done on standard (non 3D) printers. The Datenschleuder is the club magazine and has been around since 1984.

Observant data travellers will notice how far we have come and yet how little has changed about the topics. Below, and to conclude for today, some of the Datenschleuder covers up to the millennium:

#rC3: Stimmung DIY

Welcome to Part Three of this year’s getting in the mood blog posts, today with light hearted throwbacks and participation opportunities in the Tuesday edition.

What can you expect here today? Means and suggestions to get your homely cave, including yourself, in the mood for #rC3. It’s the story of trashy music, beloved merchandise and fine biscuit shapes, rounded off with two suggestions for flashing LED fun.

Grab a Mate and here we go …

COOOOOOOKIES.

Earlier this year during the DiVOC PTT three DIY 3D-printable cookie moulds were introduced by Benjamin-W. A rocket cookie is always a pleasure, hence you can find the the print templates following this link.

For two standard cookie recipes we would suggest the following; one for omnivorous beings and another for completely plant-based beings.

In terms of food safety and hygiene, a minimal spoiler reference to the Frikadellendiplom from c3gelb. (If you are not sure what that means, please get in touch with a fellow German-socialised person who has experience in the waiting business for an explanation.)

We look forward to seeing your creations on the usual channels #CookiesForWorldPeace (open for suggestions #ChaosCookies?)

Binary Blicking

[![](/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/bausatz-3-scaled.jpg)][2]

We have received the following information from Binary Kitchen in Regensburg and would like to share it with you here:

A heart for rC3

The Binary Kitchen and the BlinkenArea invite you to the first digital soldering workshop online. We meet in a digital room and solder great soldering kits together. In the soldering workshop beginners and experienced solderers can expand their knowledge with kits of different difficulty or learn soldering from scratch. We will send you the kits in advance by snail mail and then meet in a video conference. There will be a short introduction at the beginning and then you can start at your own soldering workstation. The motto is: learning by doing. Experts will be constantly in the conference to help you with questions and problems.

As we do not have much experience with online workshops, we would like to limit the number of participants to 15 per workshop. As we also have to send the kits in advance, we kindly ask you to register early. Further information on registration/kits can be found at

https://www.binary-kitchen.de/wiki/veranstaltungen:loetworkshop_digital (currently only available in German)

For those who are not yet familiar with Binary Kitchen and its projects – here is a gallery of previous workshops:

https://cloud.bluit.de/index.php/s/cDkBB8WFQNQjN2B

And for the more advanced and impatient, Dave’s little Arduino-LED rainbow-project, which has already been made on GPN19, is highly recommended. The tutorial is written in English.

In addition to the parts on the list, you will need a soldering iron and solder, as well as a computer with the Arduino IDE to put the software on the chip. You can then run the finished craftwork with a micro-USB cable, so you can enjoy the original hackcenter atmosphere at home!

Computer No. 3

From binaries and rainbows on to the part which you can send to your friends with a smirk on your face – supposing they don’t know it yet. During the preparations for this calendar, we heard impressively trashy music classics with IT/hacker-references from German history (thus in German as well, send to a German-speaking buddy for your entertainment). And let’s be honest, we didn’t want to keep that from you.

France Gall – Der Computer Nr. 3 ( live ) – Berlin – 1968

Eurocats – Surfen Multimedia – Deutsche Vorentscheidung Eurovision

HGich.T – Hackertools

The history of music in Chaos is long with many misunderstandings. Or not – who are we to judge. But it can be said with certainty that it has been a topic for a long time:

If you still have something up your sleeve – from the experience of riding branded tractors, the mating behaviour of excavators in the wild to Systemabsturz – share it #BisDieOhrenBluten (#UntilYourEarsBleed). Maybe show us your favorite non-German examples? Somewhere, torturous, insufferable catchy tunes and laughs for the coming year have to be born.

Showoff!

This year we are going, where no one has gone before. And frankly, we don’t know what to expect, only that we are very keen for it to take off. Before we plunge headlong into the unknown, we would like to look back. We believe it’s important to convey and work on the shared understanding and the ideas of what happened year after year after Christmas since 1984; especially to those of you, for whom this will be their first Chaos-event they will ever have visited. Hence, we call upon you to gather experienced nerds (with the necessary physical distance of course), take the new nerds by the (virtual) hand and show them how the Chaos works with all its old and new, its glitter and blinking. Chaos is what we make of it together.

In this regard: What was the design of your first congress / camp? With which design do you associate the most beautiful memory?

Welcome back, this time we’re in “serious Saturday” mood, presenting the latest info on #rC3 participation.

We bring you this message while hard at work with the digital build-up. Oldtimers among you might wonder where the Wiki is, when the “Fahrplan” (schedule) will be available and what you can already prepare with and for your assembly.

The short answer is: yes.

Tickets

The most pressing question probably is if and when more tickets will be available. Our volunteers are working hard trying to solve this problem, a big Thank You to them for that. We’ll get back to you as soon as we have additional news on this topic, in the meantime you can find all available info in this blogpost.

What is the ticket actually for?

As usual at Congress, no ticket is required to access the #rC3 streams, you’ll be able to watch those on media.ccc.de.

The customary Fahrplan for the streams will soon be published here.

Merchandising is also available without a ticket this year, but be aware that the webshop can only guarantee everything to be available until Sunday Dec. 6th, so hurry up and finalize those orders until then!

What do you need a ticket for, actually?
Your ticket will contain credentials for all the #rC3 services (SSO in nerd parlance). Starting point will be the new platform we’re just finalising, it will be available under https://rc3.world. The link might still be worth a look now and a bookmark as it will contain an overview and additional links until then.

Wiki, Fahrplan, Hello World

Everything’s different this year, so #rC3 is running on a new and different software as well. This platform contains all info from the Wiki, the Fahrplan and more, all with a single login. Participants will have one place to look for official events as well as the assemblies, their projects and self-organised sessions. This means that the community content as well as access to workshops and voice/video-chats will all happen on this platform. This will be completed by the assembly-spaces in the “rC3 World”, an online 2D world.

Assemblies offering free content on their own infrastructure will be able to link to those and inform ticket-holders through the rC3 platform.

The rC3 platform will offer badges as a replacement for the usual sticker-swap tables, we hope this will satisfy your hunter-gatherer instincts. Assemblies can offer 2 types of badges:

Sticker mode: showing up at the assembly gets the user a badge

Achievement mode: the assembly decides what a user has to accomplish in order to get a badge, for example solving a riddle.

The rC3 platform will keep track of a user’s badges, the user can then decide which of their own badges should be visible to other participants.

Engine room

Back to our build-up session! As in previous years we’re looking forward to all this wonderful and diverse content you and your assemblies will create to enrich and participate in this event. Assemblies will have access to a back office courtesy of our software angels. There you will be able to:

offer events and workshops (online, streaming, …)

announce your own projects

manage the members of your assembly and invite them to your back office
create your own assembly rooms (in the #rC3 World, in the voice/video-chat and so on)

upload and manage badges for your assembly

<a href="../../../../wp-content/uploads/2020/12/backoffice_sneakpreview.png

The engine room is in essence the organiser’s corner of your assembly, where you can manage the content your assembly plans to offer and which will then be available to participants. We will launch the engine room shortly and update this space with a link when this happens.

Virtual build-up in the #rC3 World

If you would like to design your own space for your assembly in the #rC3 World keep reading.
Our software angels have written a how-to for designing your own #rC3 World-compatible map in https://howto.rc3.world/maps.html .

Some pixel-pushing angels and assemblies have already created some building blocks and additional material, hoping to provide you with inspiration for your own map. We’ve created a tiles repository, already filled with lovingly crafted compatible pixel graphics and to which you will be able to add your own. It wouldn’t be a Chaos event if you weren’t able to bring your own decorations, would it? The current collection is available at the #rC3 tiles repository.

As the #rC3 seems to have a knack for attracting controversial topics (or the memes you made of them) from events past, we’ll simply do the #Aufbauleaks (build-up leaks) ourselves this time around. If you don’t want to peek (and keep the surprise momentum) please shut your eyes and keep scrolling!

The #rC3 is just being realised, please stand by.

Have you been hit by Post-Congress depression? Are you sitting at home and watching recorded Talks from between the years?
Bring a little bit of Congress to your home and help with improving quality and accessibility of the CCC recordings! You can work on the subtitles from the comfort of your home, as long or as short as you like to!

How does this work?
The transcripts are generated automatically by speech recognition software and improved and corrected by you. Since talks contain lots of domain-specific terms and may have speakers with heavy accents, this is very much necessary. The next step is again automated: aligning the subtitles to the audio. Again, the result of this process is verified by you. Afterwards, the subtitles are finished!

For a more in-depth description and how-tos, take a look at c3subtitles Wiki.

If you have any questions, contact us via any of the channels below!

You need subtitles? Let us know which talks you are interested in!

Resources exhausted: Tear Down

TLDR: Tomorrow its over, teardown starts at 18:15, don’t do anything stupid.

Dear life forms participating in Congress,

tomorrow, 36c3 will sadly come to an end and teardown awaits. For that, we need your help.

We ask all assemblies to start dismantling their installations after the Closing Event at 18:15 on December 30th. Please use gates Hall 2 – Gate 2.5, Hall 2 – Gate 2.6 and Hall 3 – Gate 3.6 for loading. There will be angels with pallet trucks to help to move your stuff to the gates. Entry to the premises has to happen via Gate Süd 1. We kindly ask you to first pack your stuff, move it to the gates and only then get your car.

After packing your stuff, please stack your chairs correctly sorted and leave the tables clean. Please do not remove said chairs from your assembly place, but stack them at the very location. Please do only tear down the Schuko part of the power distribution. We kindly ask you not to tear down stage elements, movable walls, tables or any other decorations unless you are asked to.

But tearing down the assemblies is not everything, we are happy for every helping hand. We are creating teardown shifts in the Engelsystem and ask you to sign up for them. After the Engelsystem will have gone offline, we will continue with teardown and Teardown Heaven will operate from Hall 4.

After December 30th, we will need much help till January 4th. Please come to Hall 4 between 10 and 22 o’clock and keep looking for further blog posts.

Your buildup and teardown team, known as LOC

Meet the 36C3 track team “Resilience and Sustainability”

We’re 36C3’s Resilience and Sustainability content team and want to show you just our bit of work that helped making this year’s Fahrplan as amazing as it has turned out.

Our team consists of hackers and scientists, tinkerers and PhDs and was formed for 34C3 when we felt that the conference was developing a blind spot between complete destruction of all the IT things and the fascinations for the resulting apocalypse. We wanted to give a stage to new and shiny useful technology for a better and more resilient world – with actual prototypes!

This year’s motto “resource exhaustion” added a perspective on sustainability to the track – even though the term is rather overloaded. There’s a plethora of conferences selling you on the most recent hypes about how machine learning, crypto currencies and the cloud will save the world, but we think that it is in the spirit of this community to question everything, think and focus on technology that will last for much longer – both physically and from a software engineering point of view. We found it fitting to see how the existing resources can be used and reused, who’s building resilient technologies that can help people in emergencies, oppressive regimes or off-grid situations, and – in a broader scope – how can we build the systems of the future not riddled by the problems of our generation.

Along the way, we hope we can make software developers think about the impact of their busy-looping JS, bad communication patterns and faulty software architecture – all of which are significantly contributing to climate change.

The concept of resilience itself – especially combined with sustainability – is rather interdisciplinary, part hacking and making, part science and politics. This puts us in competition with other track teams trying to catch the most interesting lectures for a given subject, but also allowed us to trade slots with those teams as well, once we were running out of our allotted time budget. ;)

Next year, we hope to collect the “haveyoursay” feedback much earlier so we can incorporate your feedback and follow your suggestions for valuable speakers and topics.

While we were quite pleased with the submissions we found once CfP kicked off, our curation process started way earlier: Reflecting on feedback we received after 35C3, we came together in IRC and RL, brainstormed about interesting projects we heard about in the past year, thought about relevant topics and identified speakers worth having.

Even then, the speakers we “invited” still had to go through our rigorous curation process. After all, our team received a total of 74 lecture submissions and had to narrow them down into only 15 hours (in 18 lectures) of 36C3 programme. We vetted each submitter, trying to make sense of their submission, read their papers, ask and answer questions and spend the remaining time meeting and coordinating with all the other track teams, before finally writing this blog post! If we add up all the time spent preparing our 18 lecture foot steps in the Fahrplan, we’re looking at one or two weeks full time work for each of us.

In the end we’re quite proud of the topics we could cover this year. Of course, we’re still not short of topics to cover next year :-) It’s time for more critical reflection of wastefulness within the computer nerd scene and how we can minimise the environmental impact of our C3s and Camps in the years to come.

Call for Angels for the 36C3 buildup and teardown

TL;DR

The buildup and teardown of 36C3 needs angels!

If you want to help with the buildup, you can come to Messe Leipzig from the 18th of December and show up in Heaven (CCL) or in hall 4 for info.
Bring warm clothes and solid shoes. Safety shoes, if you have some.
Be careful – buildup means the halls are construction sites! Take care of yourself and others. Stay in safe distance from vehicles and heavy machines and leave your pets at home. Please don’t bring children before the official start of the event if possible.
If you can stay a couple of days longer and want to earn eternal angel karma please help with the teardown! Teardown starts after the closing ceremony and goes on until the 5th of January, which means we have less than half the buildup time. So we need every possibly available angel. We will post more info regarding teardown on this blog soon.

For further info check the Event Blog for publications.
For concrete questions: 36c3@c3loc.de

Long Version

Like every year we need as many angels as possible for the 36C3 buildup so that the boring halls evolve to one shiny colourful Chaos Communication Congress.
This year’s buildup starts on the 16th of December. During the first two days there will be mostly just team arrival and bootstrapping before it all really takes off. After this more parallelized tasks will show up every day. The majority of tasks take some time to surface. Because of that we ask especially the non-Leipzig-locals to rest some days instead of arriving early and come to the buildup from the 18th of December. Don’t worry, there will be more than enough to do and more with every day.

What needs to be done?
There is a huge amount of variety in the tasks that need to be done so that everyone should find themselves a topic that fits them. Some tasks have been planned before but the majority of things happens quite spontaneously because we cannot anticipate everything very well beforehand. Especially the time tables are very fluid and can change quickly at times. Because of that there is no angel system or online shift planning used during buildup. Just come over and pick a task that suits you onsite. Please ask in Heaven, which is located in the CCL, what needs to be done at the moment or get yourself some info. If Heaven is not running yet come to the Preheaven in hall 4.

What else must be observed?
The halls are not heated during buildup. Bring some warm clothes that don’t mind some dirt and bring solid shoes, bonus points for safety shoes S1 or higher. We have some personal protective equipment (PPE) to offer but if you can bring your own working gloves, tools, $(safety-)gadgets you are more than welcome to do so.
Despite the often chilled atmosphere during buildup please remember and be aware that the buildup is a construction site! Take care of yourself and the people around you and keep safe distance from heavy machines, cars, forklifts, trucks etc.
Please don’t bring children before the official start of the event if possible. Children are an immense safety risk in the construcion areas – mostly for themselves. Please also leave your pets at home. An event with 16.000 attendees isn’t the right place for animals anyway.

And the teardown?
Teardown starts on Day 4 directly after the closing ceremony and goes on until the 5th of January.
Especially during this phase we need every help we can possibly get. Everything brought into the halls during the two weeks of buildup needs to be brought out again within six days – which is less than half the amount of time. We are thankful and happy for every angel who is able to spend some more days onsite and help with tearing down this huge event.
More info especially regarding teardown will be posted on this blog soon.

For further info check the Event Blog for publications.
If you have concrete questions please contact 36c3@c3loc.de

See you in Leipzig!
36C3 content teams running full steam

Last Sunday at midnight the submission period for our Call for Participation ended. The last submission, by a Swiss, landed just in time at 23:59:20 UTC. Our content curation teams will now use the next two weeks to review, rate, sort, and ultimately decide on a large number of submissions. We intend to inform all submitters on November 11th on whether we found a place for them in our Fahrplan.

At the time of our coordination meeting on Sunday there were 690 pending submissions in our system. To put this into perspective: If you would want to just spend a minute to review them all, you would be busy for eleven and a half hours. Another way to look at the numbers is that nearly five percent of 36C3 participants have applied to present a lecture!

Among these submissions the most popular tracks are “Ethics, Society & Politics” with 237, the “Security” track having 194 and the “Science” track seeing 82 submissions.

The following table contrasts the numbers of submissions this year with the numbers of lectures accepted for 35C3. This means that (assuming a similar amount of lectures this year), some teams have to reject 82 percent of their submissions, sometimes heartbreakingly so. The sheer range and creativity of the submissions left us deeply impressed with the energy and wisdom that is sparkling within our community. All without us offering a single cent of speaking fees.

Track

Submissions

Slots

Art & Culture

49

18

Ethics, Society & Politics

237

42

Hardware & Making

49

16

Resilience & Sustainability

61

16

Science

82

21

Security

194

39

To complicate things further: You gave us valuable feedback on our haveyoursay interface, which helped us identify important issues not yet covered by submissions. Of the over 2,000 comments you sent us, around a third was constructive and helpful, with some of them pointing to things other than the conference program where 36C3 could improve. So in addition of the submissions already in frab, some of this year’s content will be filled by invitations by our content curators.

What this all means: Each lecture that makes it into this year’s Fahrplan has prevailed against tough competition and each presenter we could not accept to the conference can be sure that they belong to a group of high quality submissions that had to be turned down solely due to time constraints. We simply do not have more than four days and five stages. With all high quality rejections alone we easily could fill two more conferences. And while our teams often try to explain their decisions together with their rejections, the overwhelming number of submissions makes answering each and everyone of them a time consuming effort. Also, as stated above, the most common reason not to accept a lecture is the simple lack of space in our Fahrplan. So if you receive a rejection email with that reason, please don’t take it as a cheap excuse.

But who are those in charge of selecting 36C3 content? At the moment, lectures are curated by six teams with three to ten main curators and an extended set of reviewers – all in all around sixty people now eagerly working through all those submissions. Some of them have introduced themselves in this blog in the past.

/en/2013/11/16/the-30c3-security-track/

/en/2014/11/21/fahrplanplanungskomitee/

/en/2013/12/23/highlights-of-30c3-art-beauty-track-and-works/

/en/2013/11/15/on-the-acceptance-and-rejections-in-the-30c3-society-politics-ethics-track/

Some team members have introduced themselves on their social media accounts and actively work on encouraging potential speakers to submit (just monitor #36c3 to find out who they are), while others prefer to just help anonymously. And a lot of work is needed: Starting even during CfP submission periods, around 250 lectures needed to be fixed up, their durations, event type or tracks corrected, questions answered by email, co-speakers manually added, and typos corrected. With those bureaucratic nuisances out of the way, all submission now have the best chance to shine by their merits.

Over the next two weeks, our curators will now have to dive into the actual details: analyse the substance, verify claims made in the submissions, clustering them by rough topics, researching presenters regarding their expertise and ability to present – and to verify they do not accidentally invite PR drones, intelligence service, or military personnel on stage. So if you see storms of visitors on your social (business) media accounts, just smile and wave at our curation teams. ;)

Our teams are made up of experts in their respective fields, sometimes working in their domains for decades, who can tap into their vast networks to help estimate a submitter’s history. We want the speakers to present their own work, we want them to present for their enthusiasm for the topic, not money. We want them to be role models, not rock stars. So it is important that our teams find out who the speakers have been working for in the past, where they have presented and how that turned out, and if the conduct in their communities might raise objections to having them on our stages.

In the end we need to find a balance between novelty and community traditions, presentation skills and domain knowledge, entertainment value and soundness, allowing newcomers and tapping into weathered experts, presenting utopists and realists, as well as topics with global impact and niche expertise we think will be important soon.

With so many knobs to turn, we know it’s impossible not to be disappointed with the outcome of certain promising choices, and in the end each 36C3 participant brings a slightly different set of interests, so it might very well be that you find parts of the Fahrplan uninteresting and some lectures worth being replaced with others that you might find more interesting. But keep in mind, there are 16,000 other attendees who might disagree.

One last thing: While the content teams curating the main stages have the longest traditions, they’re by far not the only teams working on content presented at 36C3: As usual there will be self-organised lightning talks, which you can submit at https://c3lt.de/ once its 36C3 section is live. Also there are at least three decentralised stages at 36C3 assemblies that await your submission now: Chaos West will be running a stage at their asssembly, you can submit to here https://fahrplan.chaos-west.de/36c3/cfp, the Freifunk community has kicked off their CfP here https://talks.oio.social/36c3-oio/cfp and, last but not least, ChaosZone just opened theirs as well https://cfp.chaoszone.cz/36c3/cfp.

Oh, and one more thing: If the stars align just right, this year there might be a Hacker Jeopardy again!

36C3: Tickets & Presale

It’s that time of the year again – we’re opening the presale for this year’s Chaos Communication Congress!

As in the last years, there will be two phases, with the first one starting on 2019-10-21. During the first phase, we will invite the core of our community to participate in the presale. It will end as soon as no more tickets are left in the pool for this phase, but by 2019-11-07 at the latest.

During the second phase we’ll open the presale to everybody on three dates. These dates are:

2019-11-08 12:00 CET

2019-11-10 17:00 CET

2019-11-21 21:00 CET

Usually tickets are gone very fast on these dates, so take care to be on time. We’ll offer all tickets for presale and expect not to be able to sell any tickets on site.

Like last year, the Congress ticket includes a public transport ticket that is valid in all of Leipzig (area 110 of MDV) during 36C3. Again, there will also be more frequent tram and bus connections to and from 36C3, especially at night.

To make 36C3 as awesome as possible, we’ll need to reach an average ticket price of EUR 145. We nevertheless decided to start ticket pricing at EUR 120. Please buy a Supporter ticket if you’re able to, to allow us to continue offering the lower-priced tickets to other attendees! You’ll soon find details and a chart plotting the average ticket price of currently sold tickets at https://tickets.events.ccc.de.

If you are able to support us, please do!

You can find a more detailed explanation of the presale phases and the voucher system at https://tickets.events.ccc.de/36c3/docs. If you have any questions, please refer to the FAQ at https://tickets.events.ccc.de/36c3/page/faq or contact us at mailto:36c3-tickets@cccv.de, if your question is not answered in the FAQ.

If you were logging at least 16 hours in angel shifts last year and agreed to receiving emails from us, you should find a voucher in your mailbox.

Local CCC groups and similar entities have also received their vouchers by now. If you belong to such a group and have not received any vouchers, please check in with other groups in your local and social periphery. If none of them have received any vouchers, please get in touch.

See you in December!

Being an Angel at Chaos Communication Camp 2019

Hello fellow life form.
Let’s get it out of the way: We need lots of volunteers, especially for teardown. If you want to help, become an angel.

I want to help
That’s easy. You just need to register on Engelsystem and come to heaven on camp. You’ll find more details in our wiki.

I want to help with buildup
There are not as many different tasks during buildup, so please don’t arrive early without talking to us first. If you are resilient, love to to tackle even heavy work and want to arrive early for buildup please contact us at ticket@c3heaven.de so we’re able to plan for you accordingly. Be aware of the timeline.

I want to help during camp
Nice! Being an angel is one of the best opportunities to meet new people and look behind the scenes. There are many different tasks in the Engelsystem and you might join different teams on the “Angeltypes” page. There’s an overview of angeltypes. Questions will be answered by heaven in the Engelsystem and via email to ticket@c3heaven.de.

I want to help with teardown
To leave no traces we especially need angels after camp. Just stay a little longer and help with teardown.

What else is there to know?
We’ll be surrounded by nature, so plan and act accordingly.
Be aware of heat and the sun, drink more water and apply sunscreen.
This checklist might give you some pointers on what to consider.
There will be a tent only (no campers) heaven village, although we encourage you to prioritize populating other villages first.
For further and frequent questions monitor the “Ask the Heaven” page on Engelsystem.

We look forward to your contributions, projects, and participation as Camp is what you make of it. Without you, it would just be a pile of infrastructure right in the middle of nowhere. So let’s make the Camp into a Hackerevent worth remembering. See you.

Wir sind in der Natur, deal with it

Hello camp visitors,

there is general camp planning going on for several weeks so far. Now we need information in terms of your villages in order to do concrete campsite planning. If you want to create some big stuff we need to know. You can find the contact details below in this post.
For your orientation we gathered some facts that are clear so far:

water:
The watersystem we build up for the camp is limited in its capacity and unfortunately won’t be very high due to local supply limitation. This means that we need to watch our water consumption a little bit. From the overall capacity we need to supply all of the sanitary and gastronomic infrastructure, e.g. the showers, dish washing stations, drinking water supply, heavens kitchen and so on. That means we cannot manage to supply running water in individual villages. So please plan to get water from the closest water station and find a workaround with water tanks. It’s also planned to limit the showering time to several hours a day to reduce the amount of water consumption.
Please be thrifty with the water and for example take a dip in the nearest lake instead of having a massive water fight on the campsite.

electricity:
As for the 2015 camp we will bring generators for the electricity supply because we can´t get enough power from the Ziegeleipark. As usual for a generator powered grid interruptions are possible.
It’s the same as for the water: please be thrifty and leave hungry consumers (e.g. old fridges or likewise) at home.
If you want to use your own solar power infrastructure to supply your village or if you are bringing big power consumers (>2kW) you necessarily need to speak to our power team (camp2019@c3power.de). Due to necessary fire protection, environmental and noise issues, please leave own generators at home. Nobody likes stinking two-stroke engine generators.

tents and buildings:
Due to safety reasons on the campsite you need to involve the village team in the planning of your village. If you want to bring big tents or build up something special, you need the village team’s permission. Tents for example are limited to the size of 75 square meters and must not have a second floor. Please don’t bring materials that are easily inflammable to build up your village. Cars and similar vehicles can not be parked in the villages.
Don’t dig holes and pits. There are several undocumented cables and pipes in the Ziegeleipark which are suspected to lie low under ground. The ground is not fun to dig in either. Also please don’t bring big pegs and don’t drive your tent pegs deeper in the ground than 20cm.
Please answer the village registration (https://signup.c3assemblies.de/) and speak about your plans. You also get the possibility to order tables, chairs, big tents and wood via the village team. Only register your planned village if you already got a ticket for the camp!

fire and cooking:
There definitely won’t be the possibility to have open fires or campfires on the campsite and the whole area due to fire safety. The same goes for barbeque grills on the campsite. As in 2015 there will a defined area where barbeque grills can be used. If you want to use a gas cooker make absolutely sure that it is based on some non inflammable ground and that it stands solidly and is not likely to fall over. The operation of a major village kitchen is only possible after permission of the village team.
Please be aware that the fire safety rules need to be adjusted if there is a change in weather oder dryness and can become stricter.

vehicles:
If you want to bring your vehicle please take care of the ground, yourself and the people nearby. The campsite won’t have a continuously bright illumination and a black dressed person or a pothole can easily be overlooked in the later evening. Please leave your battery powered vehicles at the chargers after dusk and please leave vehicles running on any kind of fuel at home. The noise and exhaust for other camp visitors exceed the individual fun. Also if your vehicle is leaking fuel it will damage the environment around.

water protection and environmental protection:
The Ziegeleipark Mildenberg is based in a water protection area (Wasserschutzgebiet). Please make sure that your cars, campers, motorcycles etc. are not leaking fuel.
Please leave any kind of chemicals at home. The opportunity of producing a new circuit board versus the possibility of damaging the closest drinking water reservoir is definitely not worth it.

music and noise:
If you bring PAs please limit the volume in sense of your neighbors on the campsite and outside the Ziegeleipark. Background music is totally fine in your village but constant party volume in some parts of the campsite was a problem in 2015 that we don´t want to have again.
There will be a major party area that is designed to produce a low noise level to the outside.

be excellent to each other:
In 2015 we got major complaints from neighbors outside the Ziegeleipark about noise, trash thrown in private gardens and damage to private property. We assume that this won´t happen again. Be excellent to each other!

dont forget your towel:
Have in mind that we are outside in the actual nature in midsummer. Bring sun protection, bring sunscreen, a big hat, create yourself some shady space. Have in mind to drink enough and also have in mind that in case of rain it can become quite muddy.
Bring a chair including a backrest and don’t forget your towel!

questions?

Village coordination, village buildup, village placing and questions
about villages: cccamp19@c3assemblies.de
Village registration: https://signup.c3assemblies.de/

Power supply, solar powered infrastructure, questions concerning your needed supply: camp2019@c3power.de

Logistics, deliveries, mail, moving heavy objects on campsite and so on: camp19@c3loc.de

The halls are still grey and empty and 35c3 hasn’t started yet, but work behind the scenes has already started as it does every year. On December 15th and 17th, large amounts of material will arrive at the Messe that have to be unloaded. We are in need for help to do that!

So if you’re able, please consider coming by on both days at around 9 am.

Help is especially needed by physically fit people as a lot of heavy equipment has to be moved. Please bring cloth that can get dirty, gloves and working boots.

If you want to help, come by to hall 4 and help. If you need to reach us, you can do so by phone: 034139294864.

Tl;dr: Please read the FAQ and do the halfnarp!

It’s that time of the year again: We’re going to gather in Leipzig at the Chaos Communication Congress with our fellow mad hatters and get lectured. But before we can have the time of our lives, we need you, you, you to make the Fahrplan as frictionless as possible – we have to shuffle around a record-breaking number of around 160 lectures.

Without further ado, we present the 35C3 halfnarp and would kindly ask you to lose yourself in the options, then mark and submit the lectures you plan to attend. We’ll take your data into account when scheduling lectures and later provide a recommendation web depending on the correlations we find. Our main goal is to make sure that certain most-clicked lectures will not happen at the same time. If you have any questions about the halfnarp, please see our FAQ.

And to make halfnarping even funnier for all those pausing Diablo Immortal on their phones, the new narpr(beta) feature allows for some easier interaction: it’s just a swipe to the left and then a swipe to the ri-i-i-i-ight – to mark your favourite things.
