TL;DR

Various support structures are available for you at 39C3.

Awareness: e.g. in cases of discrimination, boundary violations, harassment and (sexualised) violence.

c3auti: Needs and problems of neurodivergent beings

Accessibility: easy access and minor support issues on site.

Contact details can be found in the text below and at help.ccc.de.

In addition, CERT is available for medical care, CrewCrew for security issues and the arbitration board for serious conflicts.

Please read the principles.

All Creatures Welcome

“What brings us together is not what we already know, but what we still want to learn. This exchange of knowledge is only possible if we approach each other with an open mind and with an attitude of mutual respect and support.
We want to create an environment characterised by tolerance, respect, curiosity, fun, openness to communicate, friendliness and consideration”, as stated by our principles. The Chaos Communication Congress aspires to be a space where all beings can find a place – as free as possible from harassment, boundary violations and discrimination, and to be needs-oriented and with as few barriers as possible. To get closer to this goal, there are various teams that take care of different aspects and are there to provide support:

The awareness team can be contacted in cases of discrimination, boundary violations, harassment and (sexualised) violence, or if you have previous experience of such issues and need help dealing with them at the event.

The c3auti team is the point of contact for the needs and problems of neurodivergent beings and takes care of the QuietQube. The QuietCube can also be used by beings who are not neurodivergent.

c3accessibility deals with accessibility issues in advance and is also available at the information desk for minor support requests.

In addition, you can also contact

the CERT, the medical and fire safety team,

the CrewCrew, our security team (consisting of women and non-binary persons) and

the arbitration board
are also available to assist you.

c3awareness

People can turn to the awareness team when they have experienced discrimination, boundary violations, harassment or even sexualised violence and there is a connection to the event. Sometimes the issue is about break ups, conflicts, or uncertainty about how to deal with a challenging situation. It might also be a case of people just being overwhelmed by the event and its many impressions.

We are partial, meaning that we are on the side of the person who asks us for support. We do not seek to determine what is right or wrong – our focus is always on ‘How are you feeling about this?’. Naturally, we treat all conversations as confidential.

During the conversation, we will work together to find out how attending the rest of the event can be made as pleasant an experience as possible. Sometimes, however, it is not possible to resolve the issue.

Many of the experiences that cause people to contact us did not happen at the event itself but beforehand. However, they do affect participation in the event because the other person may also be there. Boundary violations, including (sexualised) violence, have a lasting impact on people. The experience must be processed, certain situations are difficult to endure afterwards, and trust in other people or that nothing will ‘happen’ can be shaken or destroyed. Those affected often fear that they will not be believed or that they will even be held responsible (or blamed) for what happened. This makes it difficult for them to talk about their experiences. The thought that the person who committed the assault or violence is at the event, or that an encounter with them could occur, can cause anxiety. Often, the consequence is that those affected no longer feel comfortable and sooner or later stay away. We try to counteract this through our work.

Contact

Phone: +49 40 5730830 113

DECT: 113

Mastodon: https://chaos.social/@c3awareness

Email: team@c3awareness.de

Find out more about our work on our webpage and in our Talk at 37C3.

c3auti

The conference is a great event, but it can quickly lead to sensory overload and exhaustion. Many members of the c3auti team are autistic and are familiar with this situation.

c3auti is a team that specifically focuses on the needs and challenges of neurodivergent beings (Autism, AD(H)D, …), as well as beings who would like to take advantage of these offers. All creatures are welcome.

With the QuietQube we offer a quieter place for low‑key socializing/hacking. In addition to a listening ear, you’ll also find tools such as stimming toys or hearing protection.
If you need even more quietness, we’re happy to provide you with a silent/dark retreat via the Silent Room. Just let one of our angels know.

In the event of a melt-/shutdown, call us at 1199 or signal another being to do this for you. We’ll pick you up and escort you along the quickest route to a quiet, secluded place where we can support you.
Through our close collaboration, we can also connect you – if you wish – with CERT, Awareness, or CrewCrew (Security).

Contact

These numbers are open from 10:00 to 03:00 (morning to late night) during the event. Outside these hours, CERT can be reached in emergencies by dialing 112 (DECT).

DECT: 2884 generally (“AUTI”) / 1199 in acute situations

Phone: +49 40 5730830 2884 generally / +49 40 5730830 1199 acute

Accessibility

For several years now, this team has been working to remove barriers at the Congress. The team has compiled a large amount of information on accessibility on the infopages and is also available to answer any questions or concerns you may have before the event.

In addition to the information desk, there will be a special contact point for all accessibility issues at the event. There you can ask for help if you need assistance with anything specific. You can also let them know if you encounter any further barriers.

The accessibility help desk is a first-level support service, similar to the information desk, but it may have more experience and sensitivity in supporting people with disabilities. Communication cards containing basic information on how to interact with people with disabilities are also available there. Limited short-term assistance may also be provided. If you foresee that you will need constant personal assistance, please bring your own.

You can also make your own hidden disabilities badge at the accessibility help desk or get help creating one.

@c3tactile is working on tactile signage and floor plans. The team is also supplementing the tactile guidance system already in place at CCH. Please keep the strips clear, as well as the escape routes.

And one more request: some people rely on the lifts to get from one floor to another in the CCH. If you do not need to take the lift, please use the stairs and escalators, as the lifts quickly reach their capacity limits.

38C3 Accessibility Update

How will accessibility be at Congress? We have learned a lot last year. There are improvements.

What is new or different?

An issue with accessibility of the Congress Centre has been resolved: all induction loops should now be operable.

The Accessibility Helpdesk at Infodesk is a place to ask questions.

Hidden Disability Badges will also be available at the Helpdesk.

Using a wheelchair on 37C3 was difficult. Here’s a list of fixed and remaining issues.

QuietQube has moved one door to the left. Navigation links will be provided soon. The Silent Room will once again be hidden. You can ask for its location on site.

We can promise that there will be a Meltdown Room this time.

Blind Navigation

Blind Navigation was challenging at 37C3.

We have made things better:

Tactile paths that would not work will be modified. We will use a mobile guidance system.. We will provide detailed info.

There will be better signage. Including tactile signs. (German Braille)

Infos will be more reliable.

Please help and keep the guidance system free of obstacles. You are encouraged to clear obstacles when you see them.

What will be the same?

To bring an assistant: Show an official disabled ID card at the entrance.

If you can’t provide such an ID, ask 38c3-tickets@cccv.de for help.

Please give 38c3-tickets@cccv.de a heads-up if you have multiple or changing assistants.

The lecture halls have priority seating.

Contact and Questions:

Before the Event

Write an e-mail to the Inclusion Operation Center: kontakt@c3ioc.de

Join our Matrix Room: #accessibility:events.ccc.de

During the Event

Call 📞 A11Y from the Eventphone DECT/SIP network.

The Infodesk will respond to e-Mails more quickly: mailto:38c3-infodesk@cccv.de

Further Info

help.ccc.de

38C3 info page about Accessibility

Changelog

As info becomes clearer and improvements and are being made in the background, this article will be updated.

04/12 added caution about blind guidance modifications

10/12:

added changelog

updated contact info

describing enhancements to blind navigation, removing warnings

Accessibility at 37C3

To answer questions regarding Accessibility at Congress:

In short:

Our venue, CCH, is accessible

simply bring your assistants to the entrance

Hidden Disabilities Badges and quiet hacking at QuietQube

Silent Room access and more Accessibility info at Helpdesk

Please: wear a mask, get tested, don’t come while infectious.

CCH recently got renovated. Therefore it has good barrier-free access. For instance: a tactile guide system, captions in braille, induction loops and modern toilets. All places will be wheelchair-accessible. Including stages.

More info on accessibility at the CCH website

Tickets and Assistants

If you need an assistant, they can get into the venue for free. Simply bring them and your ticket to the entrance. Please bring an official disabled ID card.

Ask 37c3-tickets@cccv.de if you need to bring an assistant but can’t provide an ID. Also, please inform us if you have multiple assistants taking turns.

If the ticket shop is not accessible to you, please reach out, too.

Important Places

QuietQube
The QuietQube is a quiet social place for everyone. It is meant for socialising, hacking and chilling. There are couches, desks and cozy seating. A Code of Conduct will help in case of conflicts.

Helpdesk
The Helpdesk at QuietQube will provide accessibility info. You can also get a Hidden Disabilities Badge.

Silent Room
The Silent Room is a place to rest. Helpdesk will guide you to it.

Infopages and Infodesk
Infodesk and Infopages can answer many questions about accessibility.

Awareness

The Awareness Team will support you if you have bad experiences at Congress.

Preventing Diseases

We expect all visitors to take care of each other. So we ask you to help us out:

If possible, please wear a mask.

Please get tested before joining the event.

If you have a cough, sniffle or diarrhoea, please stay at home.

Unfortunately, some people will not respect this. This is a risk you need to be aware of.

We currently don’t know if there will be free tests or masks.

Camp 2023 – Awareness

There will be an awareness team at the camp in 2023 again. c3awareness is there for you if, for example:

you have been harassed or discriminated against,

your personal boundaries have been violated,

you experience (personal or structural) discrimination,

you feel uncomfortable and need a person to talk to.

The most direct way to reach us is by DECT (113), but you can also contact us by mail, via Mastodon or Matrix. If you don’t have DECT, you can also go to the Infodesk or ask someone with DECT to call us. Or you can come to our contact point at CERT.

If you are asking yourself, “Can I go to the Awareness Team already?”, the answer is: Yes! We are there for you.

You can recognise us in person by our pink-purple glowing badges (see above).

How we work

We have a room available for confidential conversations if you want to talk. You decide what you want to tell us. And you decide how to proceed from there. We will support you in finding ways of dealing with the situation or taking action if the need arises. Everything we discuss is confidential, unless we agree otherwise. We invite you to also read our more detailed introduction.

If you have experienced something that you would like to bring to the Arbitration Board, we will be happy to accompany you or prepare this with you. The Arbitration Board is responsible if there is a serious violation of the principles of the event and formal measures are to be taken against a person. You can find more information and the rules of procedure on the page of the Arbitration Board.

If you have physical or medical problems, you can get help from CERT. For safety issues, you can contact the CrewCrew. The c3awareness team also works closely with both teams when necessary.

If the many impressions, flashing lights, lots of people or loud noises get to you, you can go to the QuietPlace. The c3auti team provides support for people on the autistic spectrum, their place is also for all quiet-loving beings.
The c3auti team has also helped organise accessibility in general. For example, the helpdesk offers Hidden Disabilities badges as well as solutions if you can’t wait in queues. Detailed information about accessibility for visitors and Villages can be found in the wiki.

Principles and “Your Rights”

We would also like to point out the revised principles – which can be found on help.ccc.de. Let’s work together for a solidary and responsible community!
One step towards this is to look at one’s own needs and limits. And to be aware that these can be different for other people. The “Your rights” posters are intended to encourage this.

Showers

The issue of showering was a major concern for us during the preparation phase of the camp. The challenge of showering together with others is different for different people. That’s why we’re letting you know what shower options there will be (if nothing goes wrong). Here is the plan – but this can still change, depending on the situation on site:

Family Village in the North

24 showers total

6 of these are single cabins including a dry area for changing clothes

6 showers next to each other for FLINTA (femmes, lesbians, inter, non-binary, trans, agender persons)

2× 6 showers next to each other for all genders

Shower Wonderland in the West

36 showers total

6 of these are single cabins including a dry area for changing clothes

2× 6 showers next to each other for FLINTA (femmes, lesbians, inter, non-binary, trans, agender persons)

3× 6 showers next to each other for all genders

Showers in the South

12 showers total

probably 6 showers next to each other for FLINTA (femmes, lesbians, inter, non-binary, trans, agender persons)

and 6 showers next to each other for all genders

It was not possible to get shower elements with individual showers. Therefore, we tried to get at least a few improvised single cabins.

Single showers

Not all beings are able to shower in open, non-lockable shower tents. The following alternatives exist:

Lockable individual shower containers: The Awareness Team and Heaven have access to lockable single shower containers (gray shower/toilet containers, map M9). Please contact them to gain access.

Wheelchair accessible showers+WCs: there are 3 wheelchair accessible containers with WC and shower. The CERT will give you access to the container north of the entrance (Map U13) and to the container directly at the CERT. Access to the container south-west of the Heaven (map M13) you get from Heaven. The wheelchair accessible containers are for people with physical disabilities.

Access will be granted without questioning your reasons.

We hope that this way all beings on the camp will have the possibility to take a shower.

Meet the Awareness-Team

You want to get to know us? Then come to our workshop! When? Unfortunately we don’t know exactly yet … But we will definitely host something as a self-organised session, which we will also announce via Mastodon.
Otherwise, feel free to just get in touch with us if you want to arrange things in case you need us in any way or to have seen some faces beforehand.

If you want to be part of the team for upcoming events, you can give us your contact at the workshop or otherwise get in touch with us. We have been preparing for the camp together as a team for a few months now and will take people on only after the camp.

Kids and Teens

There will be many children and young people at the camp. That’s great!

For the first time, there will be a “Jugend-Village” (Teens Village) this year, organised by Jugend hackt and others. Jugend hackt has its own awareness structure, but we will also be in close contact with them. We as c3awareness are of course also available for participants from the Teens Village if needed.

Please pay special attention to (other) children and underage teens at workshops, talks, in your Villages and at the bars. Answer questions, provide support if needed, but also be aware of the special need for protection. The Protection of Young Persons Act (“Jugendschutzgesetz”) also applies at camp. Among other things, it regulates the consumption of alcohol and tobacco.
People under the age of 18 are not allowed to smoke. Wine, beer and sparkling wine may be sold to people aged 16 to 18, but not schnapps, long drinks or similar.

You can recognise the members of the Jugend-Village by their additional wristbands. The wristbands for 14- to 16-year-olds are green, those for 16- to 18-year-olds are pink.

The Family Village already existed in 2019. It is an area at the back of the camp site that is especially suitable for children and their companions. You can read more about it in the announcement of the Kidspace.

Camp 2023 – Accessible Camping?

All Creatures of the universe are welcome at Chaos Communication Camp. But how to camp with disabilities?

We have made plans, and a lot will be possible. But keep in mind: this is a best effort by volunteers.

Okay, what to expect for accessibility?

The Grounds:

Mildenberg Brickwork Park has info on accessibility. (external link)

There will be noise. You should be able to avoid it better this time.

There will be gravel paths, guideposts and a map. Tripping hazards or stairs will be few.

Loud announcements and flashing lights will alarm you in case of emergencies.

Service Teams:

c3IOC can answer questions: kontakt@c3ioc.de.

CERT will offer general medical aid. Reach out for special needs.

c3auti will offer quiet social spaces, mutual support and communication aids.

Awareness team will aid against discrimination.

Talks will have content notes. Spots for wheelchair users or visually impaired are prepared. There will be some audio induction loops

We’d be very happy about volunteer sign language interpreters (as we have none)

What are further barriers?

There will be no tactile or visual guide system.

There will be almost no “easy read” info.

Many paths are uneven.

There will be noisy places (audio and lights)

This is a chaos event. There will be miscommunication, so don’t hesitate to ask.

Tickets and Assistants

If you need an assistant, they can get into the venue for free. Just bring them and your ticket to the entrance. Bringing an ID that shows you need assistance will help. In any case, we will find a solution.

If there are multiple assistants on shifts, please give a heads-up to camp2023-tickets@cccv.de

Also reach out if the ticket shop is not accessible to you.

Paths

This is an outdoor event, and the quality of paths will vary. Everything you’ll need is at least accessible by gravel paths. Some short paths may cut trough grass. Tripping hazards (such as the museum train tracks) will be eliminated if possible or at least marked. Tents should not have stairs, and cable crossings will have ramps. Some of this will rely on villages cooperating.
Paths and toilets will be lit at night.

Reach out if you encounter barriers, or help us fix them. CERT (and others) will be grateful.

Toilets

Some but not all toilets will have stairs. The Museum also has proper indoor rest rooms, with nappy-changing tables, emergency pullstrings etc.

Noise

There are going to be blinking lights and noise. Camp is both a hackcenter and a festival. It’s going to be quite the fuzz.

However, you will be able to chill out:

Lounge will offer a diverse mix of music, for many tastes and sensory processing preferences.

Loud spaces have been grouped. To help create quiet spaces

You can sleep in a silent camping area, a bit off site.

There will be quiet social areas.

But there will be noise, and we want to party. Just be mindful and bring hearing protection.

In Case of Emergencies

There will be loud announcements and flashing lights if CERT needs to respond to a catastrophy. Members of c3auti and awareness will help you at emergency assembly points. We will wear pink high-vis vests.

Talks

Talks and workshops will be held in multiple locations. At least two will have audio induction loops. We’d be very happy about sign language interpreters. We don’t have any volunteers yet. If you can translate into sign and want to help, reach out! Feel encouraged to ask around in your community.

Speakers have been asked to provide content notes. These help inform you when talks deal with heavy topics or phobias. Guidance on accessibility and talks is provided by c3IOC.

There will be seating for wheelchair users and visually impaired.

Teams

These Teams will be taking care of accessibility on the event:

CERT, our emergency rescue

Will help in most medical matters.

Ask if you have special medical needs. (power for respirators, refrigerated medication; you will know best)

c3auti

offers quiet socialising.

organises mutual aid for Autis.

makes communication aids, not just for Autism.

c3awareness

will support you if you experience discrimination

can help in conflicts

will help spread awareness when people need it

c3IOC can help answer questions on inclusion and accessibility. In preparation for the event, for OCs, villages and disabled. Will be in the background on site. But ask the infodesk.

In Conclusion …

Camping is outdoors. Camping is Chaos. We know accessibility will be limited. We hope this guide will help you.

Reach out when you need assistance. Or when you need to know how to build a ramp.

We are also happy to hear about projects that improve accessibility.

rC3 Call for Subtitlers

C3Subtitles?!

Have you been hit by lockdown, you’re bored and you are craving for more chaos event feeling? Are you sitting at home and watching recorded Talks from rC3 and past Chaos events?
Bring a little bit of rC3 to your home and help with improving quality and accessibility of the CCC recordings! You can work on the subtitles from the comfort of your home, as long or as short as you like to!

How does this work?
The transcripts are generated automatically by speech recognition software and improved and corrected by you. Since talks contain lots of domain-specific terms and may have speakers with heavy accents, this is very much necessary. The next step is again automated: aligning the subtitles to the audio. Again, the result of this process is verified by you. Afterwards, the subtitles are finished!

For a more in-depth description and how-tos, take a look at c3subtitles Wiki. You can find the current status of any talk in our database on c3subtitles.de.

If you have any questions, contact us via any of the channels below!

You need subtitles? Let us know which talks you are interested in!

What if I want subtitles for a different stage?

You are part of an organisation / Erfa / Hackerspace (Chaos-West, WikiPaka, ChaosTrawler, Chaoszone, Sendezentrum, Bitwäscherei Zürich, c-base, hacc München, OIO, Chaosstudio – and all the others) which recorded and published videos during rC3?
And you would like to improve accessibility of your talks via subtitles.
Send us a message via Rocket-Chat in #subtitles or another way, see below:
What do you need:

A contact person for us,

A file containing a Fahrplan-File,

Publicly available videos, and

Motivation to take accessibility into your own hands

(Spoiler: the faster you are, the higher the chance for automatically generated transcripts by Trint – we still have credits!)

By the way: With subtitles you can make the video content machines searchable! Search for this query on media: “war das perfekte Argument dabei..”! Media can already do that: Check 14 minutes in on media.ccc.de/v/rc3-11583-rc3_eroffnung.

Contact:

#subtitles in Rocket Chat

#rC3: How To aktive Teilnahme

Welcome to the middle of the <del>film</del> warm-up blog!

Just like last weekend we bring you more information on how to participate in rC3 – because it all starts in a fortnight!

An appeal regarding the new ticket contingent: Please do _not_ click tickets for bots. Or your toaster, your fridges, or (insert any other IoT things here). Our capacity is limited and we would like to give priority to beings that pass the Turing Test. We will set up a small contingent for bots and, in the coming days, announce here how you can connect your toothbrush or remote-controlled telepresence robot.

But now to the more pressing questions like: How can you help with rC3? What about accessibility at rC3 for you beings with disabilities? And – essential for the pandemic situation – the most important information from our teams c3Gelb (the hygiene task force) and CERT (the medical and fire protection team known from the Congress).

Corona situation and risk minimisation

Please familiarise with the hygiene instructions composed by c3Gelb and keep them in mind – at least for rC3, even longer, it won’t hurt. We recommend reading and following the instructions entirely, especially if you plan to meet fellow nerds in person for the event. Stay responsible, especially with your most important people – we want to see you all again at 37C3!

Now, we hope that this information is not unsettling for some parts of the audience – well, at least it shouldn’t, unless you haven’t had any contact with the outside world since 36C3 or you’ve been following right-wing conspiracy theorists and their consorts. If you are among the latter group: Mask/CoVID deniers, right wingers and the like are not welcome here. We’d rather have the refrigerators. If you are respectful and responsible, and also act in solidarity, you are very much welcome, as every year.

Still with us? Great! Back to the good news.

Angels online

As every year, this event is supported by volunteers of all kinds and skillsets: the Angels. Traditionally, Angels take on more or less specialised tasks before, during and after the event. It is their help that makes the realisation, scope and low entrance fee possible in the first place. Without Angels there would be no Chaos events.

If you are one of the Angels planning the local rC3 Chaos Studios, you are surely already informed. For those and anyone with the itch to get involved online, our Angel coordination centre, the Heaven, looks after the Engelsystem.

Becoming an Angel is easy: You simply register at the Engelsystem (newly for every event, because we like data minimization).

Before the event, you can already keep an eye out for open shifts and requests for the virtual buildup. In the Engelsystem there is also a help-wanted list with different tasks that still need to be done. If you do have tasks, you can put them in a linked pad, and Heaven will push them over into the Engelsystem for you.

Being an Angel during the event is not only worth it for the feeling of having fought the 2020 blues together, but also to get in touch with new people. We don’t let anyone go out on a shift alone! Teams looking for junior staff may advertise mandatory trainee shifts for specialised jobs, so look out in time to secure your favourite tasks and try out cool new things!

Sadly, there’s no delicious food from the Angel Kitchen – we regret that deeply! But do check out PrivacyWeek’s @sternenkueche who faced the same challenge this year. The Sternenküche has shared some of the best-of recipes for angels at home – scaled down to private household quantities and for handy pre-cooking and reheating during the shift.

Because we are also asked time and again whether there will also be Angel goodies as existent at physical events: We are trying. Currently the scaling for more participants has priority, but we really want to make a goodie for our hardworking Angels possible after the event. Please allow email notifications on your account in the Engelsystem so that people can contact you afterwards – hopefully with super great news!

Accessibility at rC3

We consider ourselves lucky to regularly welcome community members with all kinds of of disabilities and needs to our events and learn from your perspectives.

While for some beings an online event makes all the fun accessible in the first place, the new implementation makes it much more difficult for other beings to participate. We are painfully aware that we cannot make rC3 accessible for all beings with the resources we have.

The new Accessibility team is currently collecting and pooling experience and feedback to help us get the best out of it.

If you want help, want to get involved or have any other concerns, please contact c3auti, Accessibility/Integration Operation Center (IOC) or call 2382 via eventphone.

In order to make participation at rC3 as accessible as possible, we have decided to offer two “views”. There is a “PlainUI” for the rC3 platform. You will find all the important content such as the streams, workshops/self-organised sessions, subpages where assemblies present their projects and so on, and you can participate in workshops via this PlainUI. There will be the possibility for direct messaging and video chats. The PlainUI is available in a dark and a light theme and is optimised for assistance systems such as screen readers.

As usual, the talks will be subtitled. Do you want to help? Then follow the Call for Subtitles!

In addition to the stream and the PlainUI, there is also the “rC3 World”, a 2D world that virtually recreates the assembly halls. The assemblies are already working hard to create this view of the rC3. You can walk around in the 2D-world with an avatar and meet other participants and check out a lot of lovingly designed details. There will also be chats and video chats and lots to discover.

As in previous years, there will be the Quiet Qube by c3Auti, this time within the “rC3 World”. Furthermore, c3Auti will also continue the talks from DiVOC featuring strong voices of autistic people.

One more thing: The rC3 World can currently only be controlled via keystrokes. A physical keyboard is therefore necessary, especially for tablets and smartphones. To participate in the video chats, the opt-in of your microphone and, if applicable, your camera is required. And yes, it is perfectly okay to put a friendly plush animal or a running 3d-printer in front of the camera.

CERT online

Of course, CERT can’t be there for you as usual this year, because sticking purely digital plasters just won’t do the thing, and also because real telemedicine is terribly complicated as far as the legal side is concerned.

So that you don’t have to do without your first-aid-angels, we have thought up a few things:

For all those who miss our “CERT Special Isodrink”: We have a recipe.

For all those who always wanted to check first aid cabinets (seriously, checking material makes up half of our job ;-) ) we also have something: First Aid Cabinet (CERT Edition; until now German only, any takers for translation?)

Of course we are available for you on Eventphone via the number 1818. On the digital events we leave 112 (the German equivalent of 911) to the respective local emergency services, for safety’s sake. Please keep that in mind!

And for those who still haven’t had enough, look forward to:
The nerd-mergency-room – the CERT MMORPG (available in the rC3 World): CERT angels with appropriate experience will be the NPCs for you, answering your questions and sending you on quests, if you want. We will even allow you to relive one of the legendary Firewatch shifts from Leipzig!

To make sure everything works properly, we’ll start with a message from CERT for the Assembly architects:

There is a security-tileset! And for all assemblies who want to install it: On the 25th and 26th, CERT will be sending teams around the world to do a “security walk-through”, and if you want your assembly to be #CERTified, take note of the following:

Pay attention to fire safety (fire extinguishers and fire blankets are available. If you want test seals for the fire extinguishers, you can have a link from us to add the graphics).

Pay attention to the emergency exits (signs are also available in the tileset ;-) )

Secure dangerous areas (you guessed it; barrier tape, cones, etc. are ready)

Hang up a first aid kit (available in 2 sizes: DIN 13019 and DIN 13164)

If passed, you will receive a certificate:

(Disclaimer; the inspection is valid only for the virtual rC3 2D world, and has no validity or relevance for any physical, real-existing spaces).

You can register for the inspection of your assembly from Sun, 13.12. under assembly-certificates@cert.CCC.de. Just tell us where to find your map, and we’ll send you a team, as usual. ;-)

All the best and see you on Tuesday – with surprise guests.

Hey you, maybe you already know C3Subtitles from previous chaos events. We will also create subtitles for this years rC3! Especially people who are hard of hearing and people that don’t understand and speak the language of the talk perfectly will profit from them. But if that doesn’t apply to you, it doesn’t mean the subtitles can’t be beneficial to you: Just imagine your dad/flatmate/hamster is vacuuming at the very moment you wanted to enjoy a video…

If you want to participate in the subtitles team this year, just become an angel and join the team! We will create subtitles for the recorded videos and do the timing in a subsequent step, so you don’t have to have fast fingers. All the information how all of that is done and how we distribute the workload for the decentralized chaos experience will be shown in the subtitles angel introduction meetings…

Have you been hit by Post-Congress depression? Are you sitting at home and watching recorded Talks from between the years?
Bring a little bit of Congress to your home and help with improving quality and accessibility of the CCC recordings!

If you have any questions, contact us via any of the channels below!

You need subtitles? Let us know which talks you are interested in!

Are you suffering from post-congress withdrawal? Do you want to watch congress talks but keep scrolling media.ccc.de, thinking “meh”?
#tuwat, watch talks and be a productive part of congress at the same time!
Our subtitling efforts continue between congresses, join us on c3subtitles.de and in our IRC channel #subtitles on hackint.org!

What’s there to do?

Creating subtitles comprises two phases: writing the transcript and mapping it to the video.
For the first phase you will need to correct an autogenerated transcript. If you would rather like to write a transcript from scratch, you are of course free to go ahead. When the transcript is finished, timestamps for the subtitles will be automatically generated. Then you watch the video with the subtitles playing along, adjust the timings where appropriate, and check the transcript in one single step.

Welcome to the team!

You need subtitles?

There is a talk which you would like to watch but can’t since it doesn’t have any subtitles yet?
Contact us! We will do our best to prioritise your preferred talk! Visit us in #subtitles on irc.hackint.org1 or send us a message via Twitter: @c3subtitles.

If you say that you want to make the 33c3 also work for visitors with disabilities then this might be your chance.

As a part of the subtitles team, you would help to transcribe talks live. If you like to type fast you are welcome to join us, if you don’t know how fast you can type, check your skills here 10fastfingers.com.

Please register as an subtitle angel in the engelsystem first and join as a subtitle angel. All introduction meetings will be announced in the 33c3 wiki. We are looking forward to having you as angel!

Our goal this year is to cover hall 1 and 2 with a 100% live subtitles. You will be able to see them in both halls on the screens close to the stage or on live.c3subtitles.de. Furthermore subtitles will be available at media.ccc.de itself. If you intend to watch the stream via VLC or any other player then unfortunately there won’t be any subtitles available.

We also want to try to connect people who are capable of a sign language and who might benefit from an interpreter. Please get in touch with us if you:

need ASL, BSL or a DGS interpreter

have mastered a sign language

are a CODA

You can find the contact information in our Wiki wiki.c3subtitles.de.

As you might know, during 32c3 the Subtitles Angels created real-time subtitles for all the talks which took place in Hall 1 and 2. These allowed hearing impaired visitors to follow the talks, and also provided assistance to the non-native German or English speakers.

As the last recordings are being released, the task of creating subtitles for all recording has started. For this we need your help!

If you have the capacity to create subtitles for a talk (perhaps one you wanted to watch in detail anyway), could translate a transcript or would like to do quality control, please check out subtitles.media.ccc.de and join #subtitles on hackint.

Being new to subtitling CCC talks is not a problem at all. Getting started is easy. And if transcribing is not for you, you can always work on the translations and quality control.

If you are willing to help, please take a minute to read through the new work-flow and style guide.
Please also read through these if you have previous experience subtitling CCC talks, because we have redesigned the entire interface to include Amara.

The finished subtitles will be released into the CDN and announced via Twitter at @c3srt_releases.

P.S. Remember the audio problems during the opening event? Subtitles were available all the way through. :-)
And by the way, subtitles also allow machine-indexing of the recordings. That means things like searchable archives become possible.
