[rC3 2021 - NOWHERE] Time to Say Goodbye

The remote Chaos Experience 2021 NOW/HERE is coming to an end. 96 hours passed from opening to closing. And we’re taking it further this year.

The end of the rC3-world is postponed to 2022. Our marvellous infrastructure will remain online on a best-effort basis until January 1 at 11:00am. With world chats, Jitsi & BBB, you’ll have the opportunity to celebrate New Year’s Eve with your favourite nerds.

We thank everyone who worked for months to make this event possible. And all of you who populate the here and now, doing great things together.

Stay safe, be excellent, even if the coming year will bring new challenges for all of us. But what would we nerds be without special challenges?

And with that, we disappear into nowhere.

[rC3 2021 - NOWHERE] Your Workshops: How to SoS

Hello!

An important part of the real life Congress are the numerous self-organized sessions (SoS). We’re eager to make this possible for you at rC3.

It’s easier than you think. You open the engine room and at the tab “selforganized” you click on “create SoS”. Then you enter the details of your self-organized session. You can use Markdown in the description field. Remember to tick the box “public”, so your session shows up in the schedule as well as via search.

After saving your session it will appear on the overview page as well as via the search box on the platform.

On the detail page of your self-organized session you will find the link to your temporary video conference room (BBB). All rC3 participants (people with a ticket) can join it.

In case you want to share your self-organized session with people outside of rC3, you can post a link to your own conference room in the description. Please inform your participants that they are leaving the rC3 grounds and also about the data privacy rules on your infrastructure.

[rC3 2021 - NOWHERE] Rahmenprogramm

surely you have already been waiting. Here’s the info about the program that’ll be produced by the channels.

First things first: The opening of this year’s #rC3 is happening at 11:00am and will be broadcasted by ChaosWest-TV, FeM and xHain. The same channels will also host the Infrastructure Review on the last day of the event at 6:15pm. Directly followed by the closing, streamed by ChaosWest-TV and FeM.

Newly introduced this year will be the format of c3newsshow, which you’ll see in the program of about:future, FeM and xHain. Several times a day, the newsshow will present interesting talks and highlights through the content of all channels. If you’re lost among the many channels and program points and you’re not sure where to go, or if you want to catch something new, have a look, and let our heralds inspire you.

Other than last year, this time we won’t have a main track. Instead, several independent channels will be producing the content of rC3.

We are happy to announce that together with our channels haecksen, xHain hack+makespace, CWTV, R3S, c-base, FeM, Chaosstudio Hamburg, ChaosZone TV, franconian.net, about:future / hackers against climate change München, gehacktes from hell and Sendezentrum, we created a shared schedule (v0.1 SOMETHING) for the rC3 NOWHERE.

Let’s have a look at the Coronavirus Structural Task Force with haecksen, or investigate the The Rise and Fall of “Social Bot” Research at ChaosZoneTV. If you are wondering about Kyber and Post-Quantum Crypto - How does it work?, CWTV has the answer. If you are up to something different, maybe the Tech Dominatrix and Device control as a fetish at c-base might raise your curiosity. You may be into practical bruteforce of military grade AES-1024 with R3S or do you care about the State of the Onion (Tor Project) at Chaos Studio Hamburg? Lightning Talks at rC3 2021 NOWHERE

Lightning Talks for last-minute participants

Once again, we’re doing everything differently and yet a little like last year. Perhaps people are running out of time to prepare a talk or you have always wanted to give a “small” talk: Here is our offer.

All beings are welcome to #nowhere at #rC3 on the R3S stage to give short lightning talks. And how is that going to work so close to the event? Sign up (in the pad).

You have time for one of the following sessions:

Session 1: 27.12.2021 - Day 1: 23:00 - 00:00 hrs.
Session 2: 28.12.2021 - Day 2: 23:30 - 00:30
Session 3: 30.12.2021 - Day 4: 14:30 - 15:30

You will need a few slides including: Title of the talk, nickname, desired session, contact details. Your talk must be no longer than 5 minutes and must not include videos and/or animation with sound. No face will be shown, only your slides. Please be at the Mumble linked in the pad at least 20 minutes before the start so that we can briefly try out your technique and set up the talk. We will explain everything else to you in this room.

By participating, you agree that your talk is licensed under (at least) Creative Commons CC-BY 4.0. You also agree that your talk can be streamed on multiple sites and published on media.ccc.de among others.

Chaospat:innen at rC3 2021 NOWHERE

A new year, ~~a new congress~~ a new remote Chaos Experience. Even if we are still not back to the days-of-old, at least we can meet in the digital world. And some - including you? - are venturing into this digital world for the first time. If you want support in your first steps in this colourful world, you’ve come to the right place!

Who are the Chaosmentors for?

Are you a hacker or a member of another under-represented group and unsure if you will feel comfortable or connect at a digitally distributed event? Do you have specific needs that make it difficult for you to participate? Are you interested in topics such as data protection, security, hardware hacking or net politics, but have little or no connection to the community? Maybe you are curious about the remote Chaos Experience, but you feel that you are not one of these “hackers” and that you don’t really fit in?

Then the Chaosmentors would like to welcome you to the remote Chaos Experience and make it easier for you to get started:

How does it work?

At local events, we divide the chaosMentees into groups, with one chaosMentor per group. For this new and still experimental event, that won’t work. But as a first step into full digitality, we will be there for you, your questions, worries, needs and whatever else comes to your mind via various channels before and during the event.

Prior the event you can reach us via email (chaosmentors@lists.ccc.de), Twitter (@chaosmentors) or Rocketchat (chat.rc3.world) in the channel #chaosmentors. During the event there will also be a “Virtual Assembly” in the rc3 World and in the BigBlueButton rooms, where you can meet other mentors and mentees. We will do everything we can to ensure that the assembly (assembly = that’s what we call the group-specific rooms at the congress events) is staffed throughout the event.

What do I have to do now?

Register with us as soon as possible by sending us an email. Tell us a little bit about yourself, for example, what brings you to the remote Chaos Experience, why you are contacting the Chaosmentors, what your interests are and whether you have specific needs. This way, we can find a suitable mentor for you and put together a group with similar interests. Your chaosMentor will then contact you and your group before the remote Chaos Experience so that you can get to know each other. At the remote Chaos Experience itself, you will belong to a reference group and can explore the remote Chaos Experience together virtually.

Why do we do this?

We ourselves have always had a great time at the Congress for 1, 2, 10 or 30 years. Now, for the second time, we are making the Congress we know purely digital - it’s still a bit new for us. But we know from our own experience how difficult the first step can be. Thoughts like “A big hacker conference, do I even fit in?” are not alien to us - many chaosMentors were once mentees themselves. But don’t worry - once you’ve taken the first step, great people are waiting for you - and the opportunity to learn an incredible amount. But exchange is not a one-way street: the community at the remote Chaos Experience can also learn a lot from you and lives from the diversity of the participants. That’s why we also want to encourage those who would not have dared to participate on their own. So we are especially addressing members of under-represented groups but, of course, we won’t exclude anyone.

Mentors Wanted

Of course we are looking for active support from nice, experienced and reliable mentors again this year.

As a chaosMentor you can help this time by answering questions in the Rocket Chat and BigBlueButton room, helping to find answers to questions, or contributing creative ideas to welcome mentees to a digital event. Of course, it’s especially great if you already know your way around digital events like the DiVoC :)

If you feel like taking on a group of newcomers and mentoring them, then please register with us as well. Tell us something about yourself and what you know well, so that we can find suitable mentees for you to support. Thank you for your support.

Your safety

Even with the move into the digital space, it is important to us that we offer you a safe place to go. If you need help beyond what we offer, or if you don’t feel safe at any point during the event, whether with the ChaosMentors or in general, there are also various points of contact on https://help.ccc.de that will be happy to assist you.

Please note

The Chaospat:innen are a nice but also very exhausting thing. Therefore the following requests:

Register as soon as possible - this year we are practically not ready with our infrastructure until the start of the event and we will create the groups “on demand”.
No guided tours: Please refrain from spontaneously referring people to us. We do not offer guided tours (persistent Fake News!) and the programme is for those who have registered in advance. If you meet people who are looking for orientation and connection, first consider how you can support them yourself. Every hacker can also spontaneously become a chaos mentor!
For loners: Please do not refer people who already have a connection to the Congress environment and do not belong to a minority to the ChaosMentors just because they are visiting the Congress for the first time. Become a chaos mentor yourself and discover the congress together!
No tickets: You can only become a mentee if you have a Congress ticket - unfortunately we cannot offer you tickets!
Arrival: Please indicate when you want to be at the remote Chaos Experience so that your mentor can also be present at that time.

Welcome back!

Public Event Chat

For this year’s rC3 in Nowhere, there will be an event-specific RocketChat! You can already use it - be it for exchange during map building, networking with existing teams, trades etc. It’s your central connection point for self-organization.

Note: There is no public wiki, as there was for face-to-face events, just like last year. The Hub has taken over this function, and the public rC3 RocketChat lets you communicate directly with each other.

Assemblies and Engine Room

Like last year, there is an Engine Room for all assemblies. In order to use assembly features, such as contributing a 2D map, awarding badges, etc., you must register in the Engine Room.

Information on how to use the maschinenraum can soon be found in the HowTo.

Self-Organised Sessions

To register a self-organised session you need no assembly, but an rC3-Ticket. As soon as the Hub is up and running on Day 0, you can enter your self-organised session there.

What’s New in the 2D World?

The 2D world has grown over the last 12 months and has gained several new features, including:

video walls
scripting possibilities
better badges
a companion that follows your avatar everywhere

Workshop about maps and tiles for rC3 world

Call for Interpreters: Translate rC3 2021!

If you are multilingual and fluent in German, English and maybe other languages, please consider joining the translation team.

We want to interpret as many talks in as many channels as possible, live and in real time. Our work is transmitted live in the streams, and recordings are published on CCC sites and YouTube. For each event we have two channels for interpreted content. In the first, German talks are interpreted into English, or vice versa. A second translation channel translates into languages other than English or German – what we do there depends on availability and on the interests of the group, and maybe on the specific event.

That is a lot of material to translate and in order to succeed, we need YOU. With the second channel, you have the chance to contribute in an even more special way if you can interpret into another interesting language (from English or German). We have mostly had French and Spanish, but there were others and we are interested in variety. So let us know what you can offer – especially if you can bring along a few interpreters for the same target language. Sometimes we use the second channel for interesting things that are not (strictly) translations.

Don’t be shy. If you are uncertain whether you’re good enough, chances are that you’ll do just fine. We will try to look after you as best we can in these strange times.

Simply send an email to translate-subscribe(at)lists.ccc.de, respond to the automatic confirmation mail and wait for a welcome mail. Then, if you want, you can write a quick intro to the mailing list. Also sign up as a translation angel at https://engelsystem.rc3.world/ and give the system permission to send you emails. There are four email options that you really should check in order for communications to work. It is currently unclear whether there will be T-shirts, but we recommend that you specify your T-shirt size to be ready to receive one. Most importantly, join one of our online meetings.

You need a Mumble client to take part in our meetings and to do the actual work, so set this up as much as you can. Some details can be found at https://wiki.c3lingo.org/remote. Then follow the mailing list for meeting announcements. This year we recommend that you join a meeting before day 0, but there will be an official kick-off on that day as well.

So please, take this chance and help us bring rC3 to an even wider international audience.

rC3 Engelsystem

The end of the year is near and so is the second edition of the Remote Chaos Experience (rC3 2021). Many helping hands have been preparing everything for months now, so hopefully our virtual get-together will once again be a highlight of the year. After gaining some experience last year and spontaneously finding creative solutions for a lot of problems, this year we hope for an even better event.

But we cannot achieve this on our own. Like every year, we are again depending on the help of our great community with its many volunteers. Become an angel and help to make the Remote Chaos Experience 2021 once again an unforgettable experience for everyone! Additionally, helping out as an angel is always a great opportunity to meet other creatures and to take a look behind the scenes.

Similar to presence events, we also need your help already before the event, although you do not need to be on premise for that. If you have registered an account in the Engelsystem, you will find in the news a constantly updated list of open tasks for which we are still looking for help. As always we need your support during the rC3 2021: As soon as you have received a ticket for the event, you can log in via the single sign-on with your ticket data and will automatically be marked as arrived in the Engelsystem. After that you can register for free shifts. Please read the description of each task carefully.

Your job as a herald is to guide the people through the talks. From introducing the speaker, curating and asking questions from the audience, to moderation of an Q&A session, you are the host of the talk.

Are you ready to write and hold an introduction (30sec-1min) to the speaker and talk and announce it in front of a big crowd? Are you ready to improvise on stage? If so, we want to get in touch with you. From the 13-19.12.2021 we want to have a short videochat with you.

rC3 Ticket Presale

It is the time of the year again - the presale for the remote Chaos Experience starts on the 3.12. around 12 pm. The presale will we available at https://tickets.events.ccc.de/RC3-21/ starting on friday.

Last year we dared to try an experiment and created a remote Chaos Experience. This year the pandemic situation did not improve as much as all of us were hoping. Thus we have need for a new edition of the rC3.

Just like before you will need a personal account to get access to rc3.world. This account will be generated for the event using your ticket.

The most important points about the ticket in a brief overview:

How will the presale work?

The presale starts on the 3.12. at 12pm. No voucher will be needed to order a ticket. The sale will end, should the capacity of our infrastructure be exhausted.

What do I need a ticket for?

The streams and recordings of the talks will be accessible for free and without signing in, as always. For the full Chaos Experience, however, you will need a ticket. This ticket will grant you a personal account and access to further content like the 2D World: rC3 World. The standard ticket is free of charge.

How can I support the rC3?

You can support the implementation and upgrading of the rC3 with an amount of your choice (starting with 1€) with a Supporter Ticket. Supporter Tickets can only be sold to those able to provide a billing address within the EU (not Switzerland, UK, etc.). The billing address has to be declared upon ordering. The Supporter Ticket is functionally identical to the standard ticket.

I want to create a bot for rc3.world. Do I need a ticket for the bot, for it to gain access to rc3.world?

No. To gain access to rc3.world for a bot please contact hub(at)rc3.world

Will there be tickets for single days?

No.

I belong to the press, an agency, make documentary films or something similar. Are there tickets for the press?

If you belong to the press and want to participate in the rC3 or report on it, please talk to the press team via presse(at)ccc.de!
