David Chaum at the Camp

We are excited to announce that Dr. David Chaum, cryptographer and founder of DigiCash, accepted our invitation to come to the Camp.

He will describe his ideas for enabling voters to verify their votes, using simple cryptographic techniques to ensure election integrity. David Chaum developed the system, Scantegrity, in open source and will introduce it in a talk on Saturday at 6.30 pm in Shelter Foo.

Fun at the museum

Just a reminder: Today is the last chance to take a flight with the antonow bi-plane above the camp – they start 14:00 and continue as long as there are new customers. See the wiki page for further information.

The museum will do a guided tour within the museum today. Meet at 19:00 at the statue next to the snack bar – the tour will be held in German, but we are currently trying to get a translator.

We have now enabled the feedback system and kindly ask you to provide feedback on those talks that you attended.

How? It’s really simple: Locate the event in our online schedule (“Fahrplan”) at http://events.ccc.de/camp/2007/Fahrplan/ and then on the detail page for each event there is a “Give Feedback” link. Simply follow that link and fill out the form, then submit the form.

This information is hugely important and helpful both for the speaker in order to improve his or her style of presentation and to the organisers for future events!

Hacker Ethics Hotline

We don’t want the term hacker to have such a negative connotation, right? Since the first hacks are already announced ask yourself before pressing ENTER:

Network Update

The network is all coming together now! We’ve worked hard over the past week to get top-notch connectivity to all corners of our huge campsite. Not everything is finished yet but it’s quickly getting there. The fibers are all in place, the core router is up and running and it’s already distributing the 10GE fiber backbone to various places at the site. Access switches will be placed inside the Datenklos today and tomorrow, so that everybody will be able to plug in soon.

Unfortunately we will not have as much outbound bandwidth available as we had during some previous events. Due to the small capacities of all the providers in the area of Finowfurt we only have 300 Mbps. Please use the available bandwidth wisely. We will have two big file servers (about 14TB each) in our network to share the stuff you brought from home with everybody locally. Thanks for your patience and understanding as we are doing all we can to provide you with the best possible network at the site.

Trains on strike

As German news sites are reporting, the German train drivers might be on strike beginning next Wednesday. Please plan your travel to the camp site accordingly, up to date information are to be found at a special website, and there are two hotlines up, one for Germany (08000 996633) and one for foreigners (+49 1805-334444) which will provide more help.

Strike has been forbidden, don’t panic, everything is perfect.

Besides this issue, camp preparations are going very smooth – this posting was already written via the public wireless LAN at the camp site, and the weather forecast looks just great. So see you there!

Reconnaissance at Finowfurt: The text adventure game

You wake up in your room. You realize that the Chaos Communication Camp, a hacker conference near Berlin, Germany, is only a few days away. You have been preparing for this event for months, going over what to pack in your head a million times. You bought a tent and locked down your computer. However, you’re still wondering what you’re going to do at the Camp. Somehow you get the feeling that today is the day your mission will come to you…

This is how “Reconnaissance at Finowfurt” starts, a classic text adventure (“Interactive fiction”) that tells the story of the camp and the spaceship connected to it. After ca. 4 months of working on the story, we just released this game, go and get it!

Building the camp: Progress report

Good news, everyone! Looks like the camp site will be operational soon. Electricity and power is deployed, the POC (Phone Operation Center) people are almost done with setting up their network, and the last pieces of critical infrastructure are either being unloaded at the moment or are on their way on the autobahn.

The weather looks extremely good at the moment, beautiful and sunny, but without the unbearable heat of the Chaos Communication Camp in 2003. Let’s see if it stays that way for the next days.

So, what’s left for you to do?

Pack your things for the camp
If you can: come to the site as early as possible, i.e. now. Every helping hand is needed.

CERT still looking for personal

The CERT is still looking for personal at the camp. You have a medical training (First Aid training or licence), are EMT, Paramedic or doctor? You are interested in medical health care? You are a firefighter? Feel free to contact sanifox : sanifox(at)cert.ccc.de or come to the CERT location at the Camp site. We got a shift plan so you wonÂ´t miss any lectures ;-)

Tree climbing at Chaos Communication Camp 2007

Lightning Talks at Chaos Communication Camp 2007

For spontaneous short lectures there is the possibility to give a
Lightning Talk. On day 2, 21:30, as well as on day 4, 15:30 there will
be time for everyone to give a 5 minute talk. Please add your lecture
to the wiki page.

Also mail your slides in advance in PDF file format to the moderator,
hannes@berlin.ccc.de, to prevent the need of laptop switching during
the Lightning Talks sessions or bring them on a USB stick to the
event.

How will the weather be like?

We all know that long-term weather predictions are not that accurate. However, considering the fact that the last report about two weeks ago matched very well the weather we currently have in Berlin, which is sadly cold and rain, the current long term weather report (German) promises perfect camp weather. It will become warmer beginning this Tuesday, up to 28°C Thursday, and they say that August will be warm and friendly with less-then-average rain and mostly influences of anticyclones from the Mediterranean Sea, according to their prediction. Doesn’t that sound good?

Camp preparations are going very well right now – our core organisational crew will start Monday with packaging for the camp, official buildup starts August 1st. Feel free to join us then, but be aware that we consider everyone as volunteer who is at the camp site before August 7th ;).

This buildup and packaging means that we will be for some days rather unavailable online, so expect high response times.

Will There Be Internet?

We’ve talked about most basic human needs at the Camp, but not yet about Internet access! So here’s an update on that.

We’ve secured sponsorship from various kind companies and individuals. We will deploy a fiber-based backbone around the campsite at 10 Gbps. All around the campsite, Datenklos will be deployed, where you can have your own cable plugged into the network for easy browsing in your tent.

Also, a wireless network will be deployed for 802.11a/b/g access, especially in the lecture halls.

The uplink off the campsite to the outside world will be 1 Gbps.

Please don’t trip over the fibers when strolling around! :-)

Arriving by train or plane?

If you are travelling to the camp by train, please mark in the wiki when you are going to arrive in Eberwalde Hbf. We urgently need those numbers to finalize our shuttle schedule.

If you are going to fly to the camp, you will need a train to Eberswalde, too*, see our Travel instructions for details.

We currently plan to start shuttle services on August 7th, and we will charge a small fee for the shuttle. However, we are aware that quite a bunch of hackers will arrive earlier, and we will work something out for them, too. Further information soon in this weblog.

(*) This does of course not apply for hackers on a plane or any other private flights to Finow Airport.
