38C3: Last (and Lost) Things

38C3 is over. Sadly. We hope that your journey home went well and that you had a good return to reality.

Those four days of living a utopia were far too short. There was so much more that one could have experienced, so many more things to discover, so many more people to meet, so many more talks to see … To our own regret, the length of the event can’t really be changed. But many other things can be! That is why we want to ask for your feedback. Let us know what you liked, but also what you didn’t like. We appreciate both praise and constructive suggestions for improvement! But you need to be quick: The hub will be put into archive mode on 20 January (exact time not yet determined). Once this happens, access to the hub will be read-only and feedback can no longer be submitted.

On the other hand, four days is enough time to lose quite a lot of things. But not to worry: The great team at the coat check has been looking after found items following the event. If you lost something during the event at CCH, you’re welcome to contact 38c3@c3lf.de. If you do, please describe the lost item as exactly as possible to help us find it.

Future Instructions

Coming back from congress always felt like not only traveling back to reality, but traveling to the past. And the current timeline feels more shattered than ever before. So now is time to act:

We have given you instructions to prepare for dire, upcoming times. It is now your objective to spread information, create resources and to teach resilience and technological sovereignty: to pupils, to journalists, to people in danger of being stalked.

Grow your Community

We know not everyone has the capacity to organize repair-cafes, install parties, readings, panel discussions and so on. But welcome all creatures of the universe that come to your door to seek help and community is the least we all should do.

Right now is not the time to lock yourself in a cellar and pride yourself in the superiority of your chosen operating system, programming language, tool-chain or whatever.

Organize

Chaos is found in greatest abundance wherever order is being sought. It always defeats order, because it is better organized. So if you are worried about the spread of authoritarianism, organize! There are many great things you can do to have an impact. So take that time.

Dark times lie ahead and Utopia will not just happen. So while we still can: Let’s unite and build it.

How we can help you to feel and be safe and secure at 38C3

Our Chaos Communication Congress is a large, international event with many participants, including thousands of volunteers. This creates a lot of potential to experience social overload, health emergencies or threatening situations. We all know the feeling of searching for orientation and connection in the huge, overwhelming congress world with thousands of large and small projects, with concerts, discussions, lectures, full of art and culture. We understand that it can be a challenge to enjoy this freedom under the impression of all these people who, at first glance, are just as twisted, queer and creative as you are yourself. It is clear that you can only really immerse yourself in the Congress experience if you also have a sense that the handful of conflicts that arise at some point with so much interaction, togetherness and coexistence will be addressed appropriately. Of course, this applies not only to the CCC itself but also to the community at the event, which lives and breathes our values. We want to create an atmosphere that is characterised by tolerance, respect, curiosity, fun, a willingness to talk, friendliness and respectful cooperation.

For many years, numerous teams have been working to make Congress safe for everyone: Starting with our Logistics Operations Center (LOC), which catches threats from marauding forklift trucks, the CERT, which takes care of you in the event of minor and major medical emergencies, the Hygiene Protection Team (c3gelb) [link in German], which, in cooperation with the Engel kitchen and the Bottle Operation Centre, prevents the outbreak of the once infamous congress epidemic, and the Awareness team, which tries to convey our self-image in our dealings with each other to the more vulnerable participants as a guide and to the less reflective, stronger ones as food for thought and red lines.

This work is also taken on by teams ranging from our CrewCrew (Security), who step into the breach for you in the event of physical threats from others and at the same time try to prevent dangerous situations from arising in the first place, to the Arbitration Board, which works out ways for people in our community to live together safely in the event of complex interpersonal conflicts, the Accessibility and c3auti teams, who do their utmost to help people with disabilities have the best Congress experience, and the Chaospatinnen (Chaos mentors), who pick up first-time visitors arriving with huge eyes of amazement and find opportunities for everyone to connect at Congress.

Without all these people, who – like you – naturally pay the full admission price, Congress would no longer be conceivable today. This year, we once again call on you all to take our principles to heart and to familiarise yourselves with our support services in advance.

38C3: ISDN Version

2024. The brave new world has completely transformed telephony. IP telephony has replaced conventional telephone technology, including ISDN and all its components. Until 2017, we drove a truck to the Chaos Communication Congress on December 21. We spent days hauling, packing, pulling cables, patching cables, configuring, maintaining main distribution plans and fixing errors so that everything was up and running by 26.12. at the latest. Then we registered every DECT phone by hand from 26.12. onwards. We were finished on 29.12. and on 30.12. we dismantled until the new year.

Over the past few years, we have packed our IP DECT system with features and optimized everything to such an extent that we have even laser-cut our own boxes for our hardware.

We have 3D printed logos for our DECT RFPs, a web server runs in the PoC dwarf and how it works is properly documented in the internal wiki. With screenshot. Translated with DeepL.com (free version) Boring! We arrive by car, someone pushes a computer into the rack, we distribute a few RFPs, connect them to the network and we’re done. Cabling? We don’t do that anymore. We’ve outsourced that to the internet manufacturer. Logging in? We no longer do that. We’ve outsourced it to the users. All the vintage technology is done by Chaosvermittlung. Last year, we took part in Hack Zuck on day one as a team. Because we had time. It couldn’t go on like this. We all realized it was five before total neglect. Tidiness was getting out of hand and before anyone™ had the idea of making art, someone else™ found a very large metal cupboard that was bigger and heavier than our old, rationalized telephone system. The metal cabinet goes by the name of EWSD, which means Electronic Dialing System Digital. And all like this: Yeah!

Back to ISDN

ISDN has been switched off. We’re switching it back on! And analog telephony too.

EWSD is a digital (ISDN) exchange from Siemens for public telephone networks that was in operation between 1980 and today. We have reduced it to a minimum, will set it up at the Congress and connect it to the PoC network.

Visitors have the option of connecting to the EWSD via ISDN or analog. For ISDN: If you have an NTBA, please bring it with you. If you don’t have an NTBA, you can borrow one from us.

For the complete retro experience, you can dial into the Internet via modem or ISDN. Of course with channel bundling. You’ll be surfing faster than you have for a long time!

It is not necessary to register an extension in the Guru for an EWSD connection, there are fixed extensions for this which are assigned locally. More Information. For EWSD information, keep an eye on @c3isdn.

Regisgter an extension

As every year, you can register your extension(s) in GURU3. We offer DECT, SIP, GSM, Callgroups, Applications, Announcements and Special Extensions. Please make sure that you register your extension in the correct event. You do not need to register for analog or ISDN extensions (see above). Registration has been open since 25.11.2024. The reserved extensions are reserved until 13.12. Reservations that are not redeemed then fall back into the pool.

DECT & EPDDI

It is our core product. Stable since 1993, always with the best network coverage¹ at the congress. In the underground car park, on the toilet or on the dance floor. If you can’t be reached on your DECT phone, it’s not because of Eventphone. Want to know if your device works with our system? Take a look at the DECT Phone Compatibility List.

There will also be EPDDI (EVENTPHONE Decentralized DECT Infrastructure), which means: The EVENTPHONE network from the congress - wherever you want it. In the hotel, at home, in the hackerspace or on the train. You decide. If you have RFP & Router, you can find the documentation for integration here.

GSM

There will also be mobile communications again at 38C3. There will be 2G, 4G and also 5G coverage. Bring your cell phones and CCC SIM cards. New SIM cards from the camp are also still available. For information on mobile networks, keep an eye on @c3gsm.

38C3: Last Minute Assembly Infos

It’s getting cozy! Well over 400 assemblies with countless great projects and ideas have registered, and the requests for seats have reached a new record. Unfortunately, the CCH did not become any bigger last year and the requests exceed the available seats by 1.4 times. To make the colorful diversity of the congress possible, please understand that we cannot fully meet your individual seating requests.

Our appeal: move closer together, build shared places in your assemblies, coordinate with your neighboring assemblies, explore the congress and: be excellent to each other.

You can find your assemblies on the map. If your assembly is part of a habitat, you will currently only find a marker within the habitat area on the map. Discuss the exact location with your habitat orga, the assemblies team (DECT: ASSM / 2776) will be happy to correct the map entry with you and your habitat representatives.

The project you brought along is more exciting than the table that is currently sitting there and you want to get rid of furniture? Then please bring it to the furniture drop-off point in Hall H (rear end, logistics area). Keep the escape routes clear in any case!

After prior consultation with the Assemblies Team (DECT: ASSM / 2776), you can also take furniture from the furniture drop-off, provided that the accessibility of your area is still guaranteed. Please make sure that you only take the same type of table as your area - square tables measuring 160x80cm may only be placed in Hall H and Hall 4.

To ensure that everyone has an excellent time, please note the following: Keep the paths in and around your assembly clear so that they can also be used with a wheelchair. Watch out for potential tripping hazards: Avoid them or mark unevenness and objects that are easy to overlook. Keep the guidance system for the blind clear (raised markings on the floor). As the elevators were very busy last year and this led to very long waiting times for people with limited mobility, we ask you to reduce the use of the elevators to a minimum and prefer to use the stairs instead, if you can.

This is the right place for you if you already have experience moderating on larger stages (audience > 500 people).

Herald mentees

Have you gained first moderation experience on smaller stages and want to take it to the big stage? Then the mentee shifts are just right for you. In a mentee shift, you will be on the main track with an experienced member of the Herald team. If you and your mentor feel that you are ready to present your first talk in the main track, you will be given the opportunity. If everything falls apart, your mentor will be there to take over.

community Heralds

The community stages have their very own great programme which deserves just as much attention and good heralds as the main track. If you like the small stage more or you actually helped create the programme, this is the right place. The community stages are also an opportunity to see if the big stage might be right for you next year.

Lightning Talks?

Did you assume that the thrill of sharing your ideas in front of a huge audience at a C3 was something you’d never experience? Do you work on a cool project and want to get the word out? Was your talk one of the hundreds that got rejected? Did you come up with an awesome hack that you need to share? Go ahead and enter your Lightning Talk now!

The 38C3 Lightning Talks consist of two fast-paced sessions that are perfect for pitching new software or hardware projects, exploits, creative pranks or strange ideas you need to get out to a global audience. Even if you don’t have an awesome idea or project to share, a lightning talk is perfect for pitching your assembly, your workshop or even a longer talk you’ll give as a self-organized session. Your five minutes of fame!

38C3: Self-organized Sessions

We categorize workshops, group meetings, short presentations, etc. as Self-organized Sessions.
You can create self-organized sessions stubs now, but public room booking will only be possible from 17 December.

To register a self-organized session, use the Backoffice of the Hub.

The magic word is self-organization

You want to arrange a meeting of a group or a discussion about a specific topic? Give a workshop? Host a competition or a game? Organize something outside the building? Want to give a short talk or show a movie? Start a follow-up discussion to one of the big talks? Or plan something else that needs a place at Congress?

Instead of listing all these things individually or creating categories for them, we introduced the term self-organized session a few years ago. Self-organized sessions are, as the name suggests, organized by all of you.

To create a session, click the plus sign in the top right-hand corner of the Hub homepage and then go to “Self-organized Session”. You will be redirected to the Backoffice. If you don’t yet have an account in the Hub, you should create one beforehand. When the session will take place, how long it will last, what you will do there and where it takes place is up to you. For example, you can meet at a bar or in an assembly (please check with those assemblies beforehand!).

If you need a room for more people, you can also book rooms for this purpose from 17 December. When you save the session, a check is made to see whether the selected room is still available at the selected time, otherwise an error message is displayed. Once you have supplied all these details and saved the session, it will appear in the Overview where other participants can find it. If you have selected one of the specified rooms, it will also appear in the schedule (Fahrplan) later.

The following rooms are available for self-organized sessions:

Saal E with theatre-style seating (chairs in rows), approx. 250 seats,
Saal D with banquet seating (large, round tables, e.g. for workshops), approx. 120 seats, and
Saal 6 with theatre-style seating, approx. 60 seats.

These rooms are bookable via the hub, equipped with projector/display and PA, but sessions are neither streamed nor recorded by the VOC.

Please note that this system runs on a first come, first served basis. The Hub enforces that there can only be one session in a given time slot per room. Some slots might already be reserved by “Orga” team meetings or other sessions (e.g. CCC Regiotreffen) before the public booking phase.

38C3 Hub / Wiki / Assemblies

We have opened the 38C3 Public Wiki – which we generally call “Hub” by now. The hub is meant as the central place for getting information about content at Congress: It aggregates the events from the main stages (Fahrplan), community stages, assemblies, as well as self-organized sessions into one schedule which is then also used by the mobile apps.

You can view the registered and accepted assemblies in the Assembly list. Please note, the Assembly team has not yet processed all registrations and the list will fill up over the next few days.

If you miss your Assembly in the list, please check the status of your registration in the backoffice first before sending an email to the assembly team.

Additionally, you can present your projects, share knowledge in the wiki, put your stuff up for grabs, look for ride-sharing options, and find like-minded people to start projects with.

All features are described in more details in the respective sections of the info pages.

As of now the hub’s search only includes information managed by the hub – which right know does not include the info pages, nor the phonebook, nor media.ccc.de, nor this event blog.

The hub project is still in development, and we’d like to hear about your ideas on what should be included! We have several ideas planned but are a bit short-staffed – if you like to help, the source is available. You can contact the team via Matrix #hub:events.ccc.de or email.

You can’t have enough pre-sales!

TL;DR: For 38C3 you have again the possibility to avoid long queues at the congress shirt queue by buying now. We are again organizing the merch presale as a forward transaction (Termingeschäft), so the merchandise must be picked up during the event at the CCH by December 28, 10:00 pm. So only buy if you already have a ticket for the congress! The presale closes on December 20.

In long form: The merch pre-sales of the last two events have turned out to be a practical way for us and you to secure your memorabilia in the cut and color of your choice from the comfort of your computer at home and then have it handed out stress-free at the Congress by the bustling angels of the Fashion Operation Center.

For 38C3, we’re treating ourselves and you to a slightly broader range: for all those who like to wear feminine textiles, this year there’s a choice between T-shirts in a “fitted” cut and cozy, dinner-ready T-shirt dresses with a subtle print. Friends of warmer garments, who have no use for the previously unavoidable hoodies, will this time find a lovingly subtly embroidered pullover - with no hoodie in sight - ideal for wearing to formal occasions. And for sporting activities and leisurely lounging at home, we present a special edition of sweatpants with a 38C3 print - so that you can also proudly flaunt your nerdy identity in the gym!

You have until December 20th to order. Please only order if you have a way of actually receiving the goods, i.e. you either have a ticket for 38C3 or someone with a ticket can pick up the goods for you after presenting the pick-up code. You have until 22:00 on day 2 (2024-12-28T22:00:00+01:00) to do this. In legal terms, this is called a Termingeschäft. After that date, the clothes go back on sale and we can only issue them subject to availability.

Of course, there will be a sale of sufficient Congress shirts without pre-order at 38C3 for all those who absolutely want to feel and try them on before buying, but we cannot predict availability or waiting times there. If it becomes apparent that certain textiles are already running out in the pre-sale, we will try to reorder them.

Enough said … now hop over to the ticket system and order your congress merch!

38C3 Accessibility Update

How will accessibility be at Congress? We have learned a lot last year. There are improvements.

What is new or different?

An issue with accessibility of the Congress Centre has been resolved: all induction loops should now be operable.
The Accessibility Helpdesk at Infodesk is a place to ask questions.
- Hidden Disability Badges will also be available at the Helpdesk.
Using a wheelchair on 37C3 was difficult. Here’s a list of fixed and remaining issues.
QuietQube has moved one door to the left. Navigation links will be provided soon. The Silent Room will once again be hidden. You can ask for its location on site.
- We can promise that there will be a Meltdown Room this time.

Blind Navigation was challenging at 37C3.

We have made things better:

Tactile paths that would not work will be modified. We will use a mobile guidance system.. We will provide detailed info.
There will be better signage. Including tactile signs. (German Braille)
Infos will be more reliable.

Please help and keep the guidance system free of obstacles. You are encouraged to clear obstacles when you see them.

What will be the same?

To bring an assistant: Show an official disabled ID card at the entrance.

From halfnarp to schedule

Many thanks to everyone who filled out the halfnarp. Thanks to you and the many helping hands of the speaker desk and content teams, we can present the first version of the 38C3 schedule today!

The official program of the 38th Chaos Communication Congress comes up with 7 tracks containing 140 talks with 6625 minutes of program. There is definitely something for everyone! The 38C3 starts on December 27 at 10:30 with the Opening Ceremony and ends on December 30 at 18:00 with “Return to legal constructions”.

For those of you who have been counting by hand or even found the gaps in the program: that’s right, because we have some surprise talks that we will announce to you shortly before 38C3. The timetable is version Alpha-0.1. Traditionally, there are still minor changes before and during the Congress. It’s always worth taking a look at what the content team has put together for you.

Call for Interpreters: Translate 38C3!

Planning for Congress, unsure what to do there, interested in applying your impressive language skills? If you are multilingual and fluent in German, English and maybe other languages, please consider joining the interpreters team, c3lingo.

We interpret ALL talks in the three main halls and the two community stages live and in real-time. German talks are interpreted into English, and vice versa. Our work is transmitted live in the lecture halls, streamed to the Internet, and recordings are published on CCC sites and YouTube. We have another channel where we interpret into more languages, this is transmitted and published in the same way.

That is a lot of material to interpret and in order to succeed, we need YOU. With the “more languages” channel, you have the chance to contribute in an even more special way if you can interpret into another interesting language (from English or German). We mostly feature the French or Spanish language on this channel, but if your skills differ, just let us know – especially if you can bring along a few interpreters for the same target language. Sometimes, we might even use this channel for interesting things that are not (strictly) interpretations.

Don’t be shy. If you are uncertain whether you’re good enough, chances are that you’ll do just fine. In case you‘re struggling, we will take over from you and talk it over later, no harm done.

If you are new to interpreting with us, join one of our onboarding meetings. These will be on Mumble. Some details on Mumble setup can be found on wiki.c3lingo.org/remote. We meet on the server mumble.c3lingo.org in the channel c3lingo-team/interpreters-c3lingo-meeting. Join us there at one of these times:

Once again this year, the Hamburg team has found exciting places in Hamburg that will take you away from the dens of the CCH for a few hours and let you experience new and interesting things.

Tour highlights

This time we have 15 different tours! Here are our highlights:

Alster steamboat St. Georg

Round-trip on the Alster with a view of the night skyline on board the oldest and only real Alster steamer, the “St. Georg” from 1876. On this exclusive one-hour tour we sail from Jungfernstieg, via the Inner to the Outer Alster and also take a look at some canals and tributaries. Details

Tour of the Giants

Experience Germany’s largest seaport from a completely new perspective. Port terminals around the world are secure areas – for the public, this means: No entry! Not for us. As a cooperation partner of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), the Tour of the Giants exclusively shows you the brightly lit Port of Hamburg behind the scenes at night. Details

Miniatur Wonderland

Miniatur Wunderland is the largest model railway in the world. It is one of the most popular and most visited attractions in Germany. We have secured tickets for you, as they quickly sell out during the holidays. Details

Alternative Harbor Tour

Port tour “Of treasure chests and pepper sacks” – The port of Hamburg within inequitable world trade. Where does our coffee come from, where would you find the world’s largest warehouse for oriental carpets and why does desperately poor Liberia have one of the largest trading fleets? A journey behind the backdrop of brick walls and container gantry cranes. It’s about coffee and cocoa, soybeans and bananas, jeans and weapons. Details

Old Elbe Tunnel

A look behind the scenes: The St. Pauli Elbtunnel connects the St. Pauli district with the island of Steinwerder. It was built between 1907 and 1911 and was one of the first road tunnels in the world. On this tour, Thomas Heidborn takes you up into the dome of the head-end building on the St. Pauli side and back to the time when it all began. Details

Train Museum Lokschuppen Aumühle

Vehicles from 150 years of railroad history around Hamburg have been collected and restored in the Aumühle Locomotive Shed Railway Museum. A light railroad takes you on a tour of the site and its exhibits. Expert volunteer members of the museum shed light on the history of the railroad vehicles, signal boxes and safety technology, track construction and many other aspects at several stations. If possible, we show everything in operation so you can touch it yourself! Details

Electrum

The electrum is Hamburg’s museum of electricity and technology. You can’t do without electricity – electricity has been part of our everyday lives for 130 years. Around a thousand technical devices from all eras can be found in the electrum, Hamburg’s museum of electricity in Harburg’s inland port. Details

38C3: Call for Angels

In just over a month, the 38th Chaos Communication Congress will begin. That we will have a great time together again and find “Illegal Instructions” is only possible thanks to the many volunteers, called Angels.

Being an Angel is always a great opportunity to meet other beings and take a look behind the scenes. You don’t have to commit now – you can decide to help out during the event.

For Angels (German: Engel), there is the Engelsystem. Register there and visit Heaven when you arrive at Congress. After picking up your Angel badge in Heaven, you can freely sign up for shifts for upcoming tasks. You can find more information in the Angel Guide.

During build-up and especially teardown, we always need many helping hands. So if you can come earlier or stay a bit longer after the event, we look forward to your help. Help is particularly needed during teardown, especially from beings who haven’t already exhausted themselves during build-up and the event itself. The build-up starts on 20 December. From then until the start of Congress, there will be numerous tasks each day, particularly the distribution of sofas and the distribution and setup of tables and chairs. Please do not come before the 20th; if support is needed before then, we’ll announce it spontaneously on Mastodon: @c3himmel@chaos.social.

If you want to help, just come by – even spontaneously! Access to the CCH during build-up is via the back (Tiergartenstraße) through the entrance to Hall H. Changes to this will be announced in the Engelsystem and on Mastodon.
