Refreshing Teardown

TLDR: Tomorrow its over, teardown starts at 18:15, don’t do anything stupid.

Dear life forms participating in Congress,

tomorrow, ~~42c3~~ 35c3 will sadly come to an end and teardown awaits. For that, we need your help.

We ask all assemblies to start dismantling their installations after the Closing Event at 18:15 on December 30th. Please use gates 2.5, 2.6, 3.8, 3.9 and 3.10 for unloading. We kindly ask you to first pack your stuff, move it to the gates and only then get your car.

After packing your stuff, please stack your chairs correctly sorted. Please do not remove said chairs from your assembly place, but stack them at the very location. Please do only tear down the Schuko part of the power distribution. We kindly ask you not to tear down stage elements, movable walls, tables or any other decorations unless you are asked to.

But tearing down the assemblies is not everything, we are happy for every helping hand. We are creating teardown shifts in the Engelsystem and ask you to sign up for them. After the Engelsystem will have gone offline, we will continue with teardown and Teardown Heaven will operate from Hall 4.

After December 30th, we will need much help till January 4th. Please come to Hall 4 between 10 and 22 o’clock and keep looking for further blog posts.

After standing in the cold for quite a long time, the Fairy Dust waits for you and your video-art-vision in the heat of Discodrama.

This is one of our four spots with art, culture, music and beauty at 35C3. Just like assemblies show their geeky stuff, these places show artsy stuff: Champions in their respective fields have stepped out of their bubble into ours, to give us light’n’beauty. Now they are curious about your reaction to their passion. Let’s all explore the entire universe – not only these four spaces:

Shutter Island: CCL -1 (c3nav)
- Music from morning till morning; ambient chillout DJs and VJs.
Compeiler: Space between hall 2 and CCL, -1 (c3nav)
- Opens at 2 PM, DJs and livebands from jazz to hiphop.
Uptime Bar: Hall 2, east-side (c3nav)
- Music from 2 PM till 2 AM, nice chilled music while having a mate.
Discodrama: Hall 5 (c3nav)
- Opens 2 PM with Fairy Dust art. Music starts at 6 PM. Party!

Chaos Communication via music is good fun for everyone – but there is much more to experience: Our excellent artists and creators offer us another view of the world – through music, creativity, light’n’beauty and design; of course in perfect technical manner. Their drive is often the same as ours when we design, create, modify and play with technology and other blinking things. Hacking can be art – and art can be a hack!

Assembly Arrival

Dear Assemblies,

please be aware that you need to have your congress-wristband to enter the premises starting from 27.12. Furthermore we need the number plates of the cars with which you intend to deliver stuff. Please send them as a mail to 35c3@c3loc.de or call us at 0341 39294864, the gate will only let declared cars pass.

Entry to the premises has to happen via Gate “Süd 1”, from there you’re able to drive directly to the halls. You can look up which hall your assembly is placed in using c3nav. Please use the logistics area in front of Gate 5 and 6 of each hall, i.e. Gate 2.5, 2.6 and 3.6 to unload. There you will find Angels with pallet trucks which can help you transporting your stuff to your assigned space. Please occupy them as little as possible, a good many assemblies will arrive in short order.

Additionally do keep in mind that your vehicle must at most spend 45 minutes on premise, afterwards the Messe will charge you fees.

Call for Interpreters: Translate 35C3!

If you are multilingual and fluent in German, English and maybe other languages, please consider joining the translation team.

We interpret ALL talks in the five main halls live and in real-time. German talks are interpreted into English, and vice versa. Our work is transmitted live in the lecture halls, streamed to the Internet?*, and recordings are published on CCC sites and YouTube. A second translation channel will be operated in the same way.

That is a lot of material to translate and in order to succeed, we need YOU. With the second channel, you have the chance to contribute in an even more special way if you can interpret into another interesting language (from English or German). We’ve so far focused on adding French language translations, but if your skills differ just let us know – especially if you can bring along a few interpreters for the same target language. Sometimes, we might even use the second channel for interesting things that are not (strictly) translations.

Don’t be shy. If you are uncertain whether you’re good enough, chances are that you’ll do just fine. In case you‘re struggling, we will talk it over, no harm done.

Simply send an email to “translate-subscribe(at)lists.ccc.de” and write a quick intro to the mailing list after you’ve completed your subscription. Also sign up as a translation angel at the Engelsystem. Most importantly, come to one of our meetings. The kick-off meeting on 26 Dec, 20:00 would be best, but if you can’t make that, join us at the earliest meeting that you can attend.

So please, take this chance and help us bring C3 to an even wider international audience.

Refreshing Lightning Talks #35C3

Did you think that the thrill of sharing your ideas in front of a huge
audience at a C3 was something you’d never experience? Do you work on a
cool project and want to get the word out? Was your talk one of the
hundreds that got rejected? Did you come up with an awesome hack that
you need to share? Go ahead and enter your Lightning Talk now!

The 35C3 Lightning Talks consist of three fast paced sessions which are
perfect for pitching new software or hardware projects, exploits,
creative pranks or strange ideas you need to get out to a global
audience. Even if you don’t have an awesome idea or project to share, a
Lightning Talk is perfect for pitching your Assembly, your workshop or
even a longer talk you’ll give as a self-organized session. Your five
minutes of fame!

Registration is theoretically open until the the day before the last
session (i.e. Dec. 29). However, we only have a limited number of time
slots and assign these on a first-come-first-serve basis. So don’t

Ring! Ring! #35C3

This year, we want to show that it is possible to provide reliable, secure communications infrastructure with the highest quality and premium service. For you!

DECT, SIP or GSM extensions can be reserved in the new GURU3. The old accounts and data from GURU2 have been migrated. It is now possible to select a random free extension or to display all free numbers at the push of a button.

Last year we wrote: “Unfortunately it is technically not possible to speed up or parallelize the process [of the telephone registration]“. And because it seemed impossible to us, we built it. We have retired our loyal old system and started to develop from scratch. With new hardware and new software – with focus on our biggest problems: How do we get rid of the long queues at the DECT registration? How to register phones in parallel? How can you register phones wherever you have DECT reception? How can everyone register their own phone?

And the DECT self-registration was finished. We tested it at Easterhegg 2018 with 250 users, twice. ;-) The next test took place in England: At EMF Camp already had some more testers and it worked without problems right away on the first attempt. At 35C3, we want to crack the 2500 DECT extensions from last year. Without queues! How does it work? We describe the procedure in a detailed article.

Activate encryption in your GURU3 account and only deactivate it, if your phone does not work with activated encryption.

Our first tests have shown that considerably more devices work with the new system than with the old one. Unfortunately, there are still manufacturers that deviate so much from the specification, that it is not possible for us to integrate devices from these manufacturers. We maintain a list of compatible devices in our Wiki.

There will also be GSM (mobile radio) again this year. We still have some SIM cards in stock, but please bring SIM cards from previous congresses. They still work. The GSM team will expand the network to 1800Mhz (2G) and 850Mhz (3G). The constellations in which voice and data will be distributed have not yet been finalized.

Since there was too much abuse at past events, there will be no SIP dialout on the 35C3. The 20 outgoing voice channels are only available for DECT and GSM (mobile radio) extensions. A dial-in for SIP, DECT & GSM extensions will be available at +49 (0) 464438299 < Extension>. EPVPN extensions are available from the event network with the prefix 01999 and from the EPVPN the event is available with the prefix 09.

There are other small and large new features such as the telephone book via LDAP, ringback tones or hotel DECT. Furthermore, we have a new support system. Requests via e-mail, webchat, web form, telegram message or Twitter are collected in our helpdesk software, where they can be processed by several people. We hope to offer you an even better customer experience. :-)

Registrations for Self-Organized Sessions for #35C3 are open

We’ve finally put everything together and are happy to announce: The registrations for the Self-Organized Sessions are open and waiting for you in the 35C3 event wiki.

Self-Organized Sessions are your chance to present a topic that is dear to you in a way that works best for you: It may be a workshop or a lecture, it may be a discussion, but it could also be a contest or a game. You can choose any duration between as short as 30 minutes and up to 3 hours.

For 35C3 we’ll have six rooms designated for self-organized sessions. They vary in size, seating and equipment. The smallest of these is for about ten people in a banquette seating, whereas the biggest is more like a lecture hall with room for up to 200 participants. Beside the official rooms, there will be assemblies or clusters providing room as well. They’ll show up over the course of the next days.

Choose any topic you care about – your favourite programming language, a hobby you’ve started hacking, or a discussion group to find friends with similar interests – expand the topics and the program of 35C3 and contribute your bit to a diverse and versatile Chaos Communication Congress!

Refreshing Dreams @ 35C3

We now are able to announce that we can offer some low-budget sleeping accommodation in Leipzig. After negotiations with the city administration, we now have three locations available. All are within walking distance from tram line 16. The locations are three schools; we are able to use the class rooms for sleeping.

The locations will be available from 26th to 31th of December and are open around the clock.

Tickets will be sold at the 35C3 cash desk for the following night only. The price will be €8 per night. Please take your luggage with you as there will be no guarantee that you will get the same sleeping location every time.

Details like addresses and directions from the 35C3 venue will be published in the wiki before congress. If you have further questions please contact us by mail.

Call for Angels

35c3 is ahead with its slogan „refreshing memories“. Those who have visited a Congress before will have memories of all the helping hands that make a Chaos Communication Congress possible. Those volunteers are called Angels.

And we also need a lot of angels for this year’s congress. That’s your turn! There is a lot of work and anyone can help with – there are specialized tasks requiring some level of training beforehand and there are simple tasks that can be taken care of by anyone instantly. For those helping it is a great experience to learn how the Congress organizes itself and what is happening in the background to create this event.

Last year we had 2,387 (that’s twothousandthreehundredeightyseven!) angels and each of them was needed. Such a workforce needs some coordination, that’s why „angeling“ is done with a system: The Engelsystem. If you want to be a part of this workforce, you should register with our Engelsystem.

You can do this at any time via https://engelsystem.de/35c3/.

Even if you are visiting Chaos Communication Congress for the very first time, not knowing what expects you. If you are feeling scared of being lost at an event with 16,000 participants: By helping as an Angel you will be a part of Congress from the first minute. Almost all tasks are handled in teams and so you will be able to get to know other people quickly – and dive deeper into the chaos.

So help making this congress one we all like to remember!

Proudly presenting #35C3 Fahrplan

After more than three months of planning, reviewing submissions and pondering suggestions, after endless meetings, discussions and heated arguments, after organizing trips, resolving conflicts, and making last minute arrangements, we’re now proud to release the first stable version of the 35C3 Fahrplan.

Nearly 4,000 of you provided a helpful insight into the broad distribution of your interests via halfnarp. With this data we were able to construct a schedule that hopefully minimizes frustration due to simultaneously scheduled favorite talks. And with our new concept of dedicated Foundation talks, we hope to open our arms to all who are still intimidated by the ridiculous notion of being out of their depth, and want to lend a hand by offering gentle introductions to complex topics.

But even if you can’t make it to your favourite lecture because there’s soooo much more going on around you – or even if you can’t make it to 35C3 at all –, you still can follow all the lectures on our official stages, and some of the self-organized ones, on media.ccc.de. Better yet: after Congress ends you’ll be able to enjoy the complete archives back home, when you’re in bed, curing your infamous Congress-contagion begin of January.

This year we’re offering a unique glimpse into how complex shuffling the lectures alone was in our „work in progress“ documentary slapstick time-lapse video. It shows 2,000 versions that were created in the space of 6 hours of heated massively-multiplayer distributed schedule editing. And even then we’d still have speakers busting our well balanced ideas with a single email, redefining their constraints. Some of the not yet completely resolved issues are still visible in tiny gaps in our Fahrplan, but rest assured, some amazing content is waiting for you at 35C3.

If you want, you can still use halfnarp or export your preferences via ical or into one of the many Fahrplan Apps using the QR code. There will be no printed Fahrplan on the ground this year.

The halls are still grey and empty and 35c3 hasn’t started yet, but work behind the scenes has already started as it does every year. On December 15th and 17th, large amounts of material will arrive at the Messe that have to be unloaded. We are in need for help to do that!

So if you’re able, please consider coming by on both days at around 9 am.

Help is especially needed by physically fit people as a lot of heavy equipment has to be moved. Please bring cloth that can get dirty, gloves and working boots.

As you might have noticed by now, the 35th installment of Chaos Communication Congress titled „Refreshing Memories“ will open doors in Leipzig, Germany, December 27-30th, 2018.

We welcome members of the press on grounds and would kindly ask you to request prior press accreditation. To do so, please send your name and the media you will be reporting for via email to press-accreditation@cccv.de. If you plan to take pictures or record videos as part of you reporting, that’s no problem in general, but accreditation is mandatory in that case. Please add a line telling us what your plans are.

Be sure to submit your request for press accreditation before December 16th, 2018 – and only to the address above. We’ll be glad to answer any questions by e-mail and are looking forward to welcome you at 35C3.

Fahrplan nach Euren Wünschen: Let’s do the halfnarp – agaaaaain!

It’s that time of the year again: We’re going to gather in Leipzig at the Chaos Communication Congress with our fellow mad hatters and get lectured. But before we can have the time of our lives, we need you, you, you to make the Fahrplan as frictionless as possible – we have to shuffle around a record-breaking number of around 160 lectures.

Without further ado, we present the 35C3 halfnarp and would kindly ask you to lose yourself in the options, then mark and submit the lectures you plan to attend. We’ll take your data into account when scheduling lectures and later provide a recommendation web depending on the correlations we find. Our main goal is to make sure that certain most-clicked lectures will not happen at the same time. If you have any questions about the halfnarp, please see our FAQ.

And to make halfnarping even funnier for all those pausing Diablo Immortal on their phones, the new narpr(beta) feature allows for some easier interaction: it’s just a swipe to the left and then a swipe to the ri-i-i-i-ight – to mark your favourite things.

35C3: Camping

Do you remember our camping trip to congress last year?

It was awesome. Never leaving the area, Congress 24/4. When getting tired we’d only have to take a couple of steps out of hall 2 and fall into our beds. In the morning we’d take a quick shower and were back into the fray.

What do you think? Should we do it again to 35C3?
