Are you suffering from post-congress withdrawal? Do you want to watch congress talks but keep scrolling media.ccc.de, thinking “meh”?
#tuwat, watch talks and be a productive part of congress at the same time!
Our subtitling efforts continue between congresses, join us on c3subtitles.de and in our IRC channel #subtitles on hackint.org!

What’s there to do?

Creating subtitles comprises two phases: writing the transcript and mapping it to the video.
For the first phase you will need to correct an autogenerated transcript. If you would rather like to write a transcript from scratch, you are of course free to go ahead. When the transcript is finished, timestamps for the subtitles will be automatically generated. Then you watch the video with the subtitles playing along, adjust the timings where appropriate, and check the transcript in one single step.

Welcome to the team!

You need subtitles?

There is a talk which you would like to watch but can’t since it doesn’t have any subtitles yet?
Contact us! We will do our best to prioritise your preferred talk! Visit us in #subtitles on irc.hackint.org1 or send us a message via Twitter: @c3subtitles.

34C3 is not over yet! We are tearing down, as every year, and would like to invite you to help the event. If you are still up for some community work then drop by.

Teardown will happen until January 5th. and we can use help daily from about 11:00.

On January 4th starting at 09:00 we could use some extra help – specifically people who are physically fit – to load large amounts of flightcases and other equipment.

You can find up-to-date information about this on Twitter under @c3logistics or by phone on 0341-39294864

Dear life forms participating in Congress,

tomorrow, 34c3 will sadly come to an end and teardown awaits. For that, we need your help.

We ask all assemblies to dismantle their installation after the Closing Event at 18:15 on December 30th. After packing your stuff, please stack your tables and chairs correctly sorted and clean of stickers. Please do not remove said chairs and tables from your assembly place, but stack them at the very location.

But tearing down the assemblies is not everything, we are happy for every helping hand. We are creating teardown shifts in the Engelsystem and ask you to sign up for them. After the Engelsystem will have gone offline, we will continue with teardown and Teardown Heaven will operate from Hall 4. There will be a teardown meeting in Heaven on day 4, 13 o’clock.

After December 30th, we will need much help till January 7th. Please come to Hall 4 between 10 and 22 o’clock and keep looking for further blog posts.

Your buildup and teardown team

Dear Assemblies,

please be aware that you need your congress wristband to enter the premises from today on. Furthermore we need you to send us your car’s number plate if you need back access to unload them, please send them as an email to 34c3@c3loc.de. Otherwise you won’t be able to enter the lot with a car. Please do keep in mind that you must spend at most 45 minutes in the lot. Afterwards parking will cost 64€.

Translations at 34C3

TL;DR: Just like in previous years, a team of translation angels will be on hand to whisper simultaneous interpretations of all talks at 34C3 in your ear, starting right on day one. All German talks will be translated to English, and all English talks to German. There is a second translation stream in all four locations that we will use for various target languages – catch the heralds’ announcements for details. To listen to the translations, you will need a device with either a web browser, a generic audio stream player (such as VLC), or a Mumble client (“work in progress”). We cannot provide any transmission technology that is independent from the Internet this year, but we are working to make the IP-based technologies more immediate and reliable than in previous years. More details about receiving the translations are below. Bookmark https://streaming.c3lingo.org/ for all required pointers and updates. By the way, you can also join us.

Details:

With the continuing growth of the congress and the move to a new location, serving our translations via DECT is no longer feasible. We will have two distribution technologies this year – both new and hopefully accessible to everyone. Since this is the first year with the new system, there might still be some glitches, but we will do our best to make this transition as painless as possible.

You can listen to the translations at https://streaming.media.ccc.de/34c3_translated, kindly provided by the VOC. This is specifically optimised for listening in the lecture hall, minimising latency compared to the normal stream. You can listen directly in the browser or import the link to your VLC player on any device. Instructions for this will be made available on https://streaming.c3lingo.org/. Note that latency might be a tad higher due to technical constraints.

We are setting up a Mumble server. However this is “work in progress”. This server had very low latency in our tests. It can be found at mumble.c3lingo.org on the standard mumble port (64738). You can access this server on a mumble client of your choice, our recommended clients are listed at streaming.c3lingo.org. We have also set up a web client at https://mumble.c3lingo.org/ that allows you to use Mumble in your browser without specific Mumble software.
The Mumble channels are ordered according to hall name. We have two channels in each hall. The first channel is for the translation to English or German, the second channel is the optional translation to another language. The heralds will announce whether and which other language will be offered. We have configured the channels so that you will only be able to listen, not talk.

We will update https://streaming.c3lingo.org/ with recent information and pointers, so this is a good place for you to check at the beginning of each talk. As always, our translations are also available when streaming the talks off-site (at streaming.media.ccc.de) and when viewing the talks later (at media.ccc.de).

Since this is the first year we’re using Wi-Fi as our sole means of streaming our translations at the Congress site, please do let us know any issues, preferably via Twitter. (@c3lingo or hashtag #c3t) or via email to hello [at] c3lingo.org.

Assembly deliveries

Dear Assemblies,

the Congress is now right around the corner and you’re asking yourself how to best deliver your assembly equipment. Bringing things by car will be especially easy this year, as you can drive them right up to the gates of Hall 2.

This years procedure will look like this:

Use c3nav to find out where your assembly is located (search for the name and then click on “Details”) [currently c3nav is still WIP. If you can’t find your assembly right now, come back later. In urgent cases ask the assembly team.]

Look for the gate in hall 2 closest to your assembly.

Use the entrance “Tor 1 Süd” to enter the Messe grounds. Then you need to go all around the buildings to your gate for hall 2. (You have to drive past halls 1, 3, 5, over the bridge, then past hall 4 and to your gate in hall 2).

Once you’re at your gate please unload your stuff onto a pallet or cart (will be provided at the gates) as fast as possible and bring it to your assembly. Please relocate your car off the grounds once you’re done unloading.

Important: Starting on the 27th we’ll need the license plate number of every car that wants to enter. Otherwise the gatekeepers at the entrance won’t let you pass.

If you are bringing a car with a trailer, please consider that parking a trailer on the parking spots costs money. We are working on a solution, but we can’t promise anything right now. Please contact us, if you need a parking spot for your trailer so we can get an estimate on the numbers.

You can reach us by mail at 34c3@c3loc.de.

We are looking forward to seeing you all!

The 34C3 Awareness Team

Not all of the 15.000 visitors at 34C3 will have the same needs and stance.

Thoughtfulness and respecting individual boundaries should be taken for granted. But within such a large crowd, individual boundaries can be crossed – sometimes even without the intention to do so.

This is why – just like in past years – there will be an awareness team at 34C3. The awareness team will work closely together with the team “Safety and Security” and the “Chaos Emergency Response Team” (CERT).

Safety & Security: DECT 110

CERT: DECT 112

Awarenessteam: DECT 113

If you do not have a DECT phone, any angel will be happy to help.
If do not see an angel, you will always find one at the infopoint, bars, or entrances.

You can also reach us via

e-Mail (c3-awareness@lists.ccc.de)

Twitter (open DM @c3awareness)

+49 4644-38299-113 from your (mobile) phone

The Awareness-Team supports you in mediating conflicts and can offer you a quiet place if you need one.

For example, we can offer help in case of intimidation, sexual harassment, stalking or discrimination of any kind (e.g. against people with disabilities; racism, sexism, homo- or transphobia). Naturally, we are also there for you in muss less dramatic cases. Please come talk to us if you are looking for support.

For all of you who only have a vague idea of what “awareness” means, we would like to briefly introduce our work: Being aware means to care for oneself and others, in particular if their appearance or behaviour does not meet predominant social norms. This is meant to create the mindfulness that is necessary to create an atmosphere of being excellent to each other.

Awareness means to accept other people’s individual boundaries. Humans make various diverging, sometimes even traumatic experiences in their life. This is what makes each and every one of us unique. And this is why individual boundaries must be respected regardless of whether we can understand or comprehend them in all detail.

We do our job without moralisation: We take a stance against encroaching or molesting behaviour and not individuals. We explicitly do not intend to label or judge anybody as a perpetrator. Instead, we aim to promote sympathy and respect for one another and each other’s boundaries. When the violation did not happen intentionally, we try to sensitize for future behaviour.

Last but not least: We will first ask you what has happened and whether you already have an idea what you would like to do and how we can support you. In case you do not have an idea yet, we’re ready to support you in developing one.

During Congress, we are available for you 24 hours a day. So please approach us if you experience problems – also, if you just need someone to talk, a quiet place, or any other kind of support.

tu wat – GSM and UMTS will be ready

Good news everybody: There will be GSM at 34c3! We even have 5000 plain
white SIM cards available which will be distributed by the POC again,
for a small fee of 2€ per card. SIM cards from previous events will work
as well.

The GSM network will work on 1800 MHz (DCS-1800), so it should work with
all European and quad band phones.

Additionally to the GSM network, there will also be a UMTS (3G) network
on 850 MHz (Band 5). These frequencies are very common in US phones and
should also work a lot of modern high-end LTE (4G) phones. If you want
to be sure, please look it up for your specific device.

GSM is expected to be much more stable than UMTS, so if you want to be
reachable by voice/SMS you should set up your phone to prefer GSM
instead of UMTS.

This should be ready at day 1, probably earlier.

This year we celebrate the 6th anniversary of the C3 CTF. Grab some of your hacker friends and sign up. In case you’ve been living under a rock, Capture the Flag (CTF) is a team-based competition testing hacker skills like <a href="../../../../wp-content/uploads/2017/12/tuwat-isswat.png

While this falls within congress time, the competition is hosted on the internet, is free to play for everyone and requires virtually no setup. At least one of our challenges will require a working Windows 10 VM, so you might want to set that up in advance.

Further, we will offer a junior version of our CTF with less demanding challenges. For anyone who has never played CTF before or is still beginning their CTF journey, you may check out the separate scoreboard here.

If you’re on-site be sure to pay us a visit. We may have table space for anyone not associated with an assembly. Anyone else can contact us on irc: /join #34c3ctf on hackint.

Have fun and good hack,

Needless to say, we will provide to you a phone infrastructure at Leipzig. Please do not forget to bring your DECT and mobile phone with you (and the correct charger, maybe even a headset if you have one). The congress is hosted in Leipzig for the first time, really the biggest congress location ever and maybe we have some unknown constraints. We are prepared for this big event with up to four system components (in Hamburg we had one) and up to 60 antennas (in Hamburg we had 45). We try our best to provide a comprehensive DECT network, but can’t promise because of the unknown building. If you want a fallback, register a SIP extension and use a SIP Client e.g. with your smartphone.

We apologize for the very long waiting times to register your DECT phone. Technically it is not possible to speed up or process in parallel, but we will try a new solution called PoC-Q. You can push a button and get a queue ticket. Via a website you can check your position in queue and the estimated waiting time. Hence you can use your valuable time with whatever you want instead of waiting in PoC Help-/ Registration desk line in the glass hall. If you want to find out if your DECT device is compatible with the POC-PBX, have a look on the DECT Phone Compatibility List in the Eventphone Wiki or send us a tweet (@eventphone).

What about mobile phone network (GSM/UMTS)? You can assume that there will be a GSM/UMTS Network but very experimental. The GSM team give everything to setup the mobile network, but we cannot estimate how big and which frequencies. At the PoC we will install a dashboard with the current network status and we push the important news via twitter. 5000 blank, unlabeled SIM Cards will be available and we sell them at the PoC (CCL Level 0) from 26.12.2017, 11:00 a.m. Update: You can reuse SIM-Cards from past chaos events.

DECT, SIP and GSM/UMTS extensions can be registered in the Generic User Registration Utility (Guru).

<a href="../../../../wp-content/uploads/2017/12/DBa9ywTWsAEFEaI.jpglarge.jpeg

Call for Interpreters: Translate 34C3!

If you are multilingual and fluent in German and English, please consider joining the translation team.

We interpret ALL talks in the four main halls live. German talks are interpreted into English, and vice versa. Our work is transmitted live in the lecture halls, streamed to the Internet, and recordings are published on CCC sites and YouTube. Also, like last year, we will be having a second translation channel in the two largest halls (Saal A & B) transmitted the same way.

That is a lot of stuff to translate, and for that we need YOU. At Saal A & B, you have the chance to contribute in an even more special way if you can interpret into another interesting language (from English or German). So far, we focused on adding French language translations, but if your interest is elsewhere just let us know – especially if you can bring a few interpreters for the same target language along.

Don’t be shy. If you are uncertain whether you’re good enough, chances are that you’ll do just fine. If we believe you might be struggling, we will talk it over, no harm done.

Simply send an email to “translate-subscribe(at)lists.ccc.de” and write a quick intro to the mailing list after you’ve completed subscribing. Also sign up as a translation angel at the Engelsystem. Most importantly, come to one of our meetings.

So please, take this chance and help us bring C3 to an even wider international audience.

For more information, you can contact us on Twitter at @c3lingo and #c3t, or via mail to translate(at)lists.ccc.de (after subscribing).

See (and possibly hear) you at 34C3!

Self-organized Sessions forms are opening on WED DEC 20th, 9 PM CET

Many of you have been patiently asking for this: Finally we’ll have the wiki forms ready for you to enter your self-organized sessions on Wednesday, 9 PM CET. That way you’ll wide up the topics and the program of 34C3 and contribute your bit to a divers and versatile congress!

With the move to Leipzig come some changes: The CCL has fewer rooms than the CCH so we needed something new. Thus we created the concept of “clusters” with stages. This year there are a number of clusters, each one committed to one or two topics. Each cluster has at least one stage, some have more. They often have their own Call-for-Papers to fill their stage with sessions related to their topic, but their stages are also open for you. Please check the corresponding assembly-pages for this and check with them before you enter your session on their stage.

As in the last years, the self-organized sessions offer a chance to tell what you have to say besides the official program in the main halls. Self-organized Sessions offer you a chance to present a topic that is dear to you with a less strict time limit than the lightning talks. They also offer more freedom in the form in which you present, be it a classic talk, a hands on workshop or a show of your new creation. We wrote about this in an earlier blog post in detail.

We’re looking forward to your sessions!

tuwat – Assemblies at 34C3

Dear Assemblies,

many of you are already preparing for the 34th Chaos Communication Congress.
You are planing, crafting and packing. In order to achieve a stress-free congress build-up at our new venue, we like to inform you about this year’s specifics:

tudat: Rules of the Game for Assemblies

Noise and Sound

Hall 2 will contain areas for assemblies, Kidspace, bar, catering and other installations amongst which some thousand chaotic nerds will mingle on 15.000 square meters.
The remaining 5.000 square meters in Hall 2 are seperated from assembly space via movable partition walls and will constitute one of our lecture halls.
Due to acoustic properties of the hall and the amount of different sound sources, noise will be a larger challenge. We must respect each other and reduce noise (and sound) emissions if possible. Leave your large speaker boxes at home. Hack some “Silent Discos” installations or other alternatives. Be creative on your noise prevention.

Light and Illumination

Whether we’ll be comfortable in Hall 2 depends on our abilities to turn this exhibition hall into a place of cosiness and sociability. To achieve this, the decoration team(Deko-Team) will use fabrics, light and shadow amongst other design elements. Illuminating the ceiling with 100 watt LED spotlights would contrast this idea and floodlights might only be usable in outdoor installations. Please help us together with your assembly by turning this exhibition hall into a unified work of art. We await your creative light and pixel installations with giddy anticipation.

Infrastructure

You’ll find large installations, stages and areas for self-organized sessions, workshops and lectures, chill-out lounges and tables for assemblies in Hall 2. Those tables will be furnished with chairs, have access to the congress network and electric power. Everything else is in your own responsibility. Don’t forget to bring your multi-outlet power strips, network cables and such.

Stages & Workshop areas

Stages and workshop areas will be available to your self-organized sessions and lectures.
You’ll be able to enter your sessions via the Wiki . A blog post detailing these procedures will follow shortly. One remark: As much as we like your metal band gigs, please take the noise situation into account!

Space

A new venue introduces larger challenges, explicitly the switch to a one-hall-for-all layout doesn’t make it any easier. The first impression of “Wow, this is a huge place” was followed by a matter-of-factly realization: A exhibition hall places completely new constraints and challenges on planing and build up. The hall needs to be nice to look at, avoid the exhibition hall feeling and be able to accommodate thousands of participants. We endeavour to find a suitable spot for every chaotic nerd and will continue to give our best!

Soldering

For Halls of this size strict fire regulations are in place. This includes, but is not limited to any kind of soldering. There’ll be multiple designated areas in which soldering is allowed. Soldering in your assembly will not be possible, keep your soldering iron in your bag and unpack it only in a designated soldering area.

Acceptance of work

There’ll be an inspection on the 26th at noon. This affects all larger constructions like stages, towers, tables, etc. If something is found wanting you’ll have time until the evening of the 26th to fix those issues. If expectations can’t be met until then, your installations needs to dismantled, otherwise congress won’t be able to commence on the 27th. Please keep this in mind. Start your build up early and on time and follow technical regulations of the fairgrounds. In case of doubt consult us sooner rather than later: c3-assemblies@lists.ccc.de.

Driving, Riding & Flying

There’ll be a test track for experimental vehicles at the Chaos West Center. Bikes and similar sized vehicles may not be used in the halls and hall ways. Using any other means of transportation on the fairgrounds follow our “be excellent to each other rule”. We’ll try to find an outdoor area for smaller drones, all pilots are expected to know and follow local regulations. Using drones inside buildings will not be possible.

We are happy you’re accompanying us on the adventure “fairgrounds”.

Until then, your assembly team

Autism at 34C3

TL;DR: If you need a quiet place or support, you can reach out to Sam, see below for contact details.

The Chaos Communication Congress is a tolerant and welcoming space for lifeforms of all kinds. In accordance with our hacker ethics we do not draw any difference based on ethnicity, gender, degrees or else. In short: Congress is colorful.

It is not always easy to accommodate the needs and wishes of every single group or individual. But that doesn’t mean we’re not trying to do our best. We listen to your criticism and recommendations and try to get a little better every year, expanding our offers to make everybody feel safe and welcome.

Traditionally, the proportion of autistic genes is above average at Chaos events. This is why we want to introduce our efforts for people with autism at 34C3.

Ever since 30C3, the chaos mentors have provided a place to go for people with autism. Back then, Sam Becker who is an autist herself, began to accommodate for the special needs for people with autism at 34C3. From first hand experience, she knows very well how hard it can be at times to deal with all these people, the noise, the music and the light. Here (German) she wrote about her first Congress experience. Even neurotypical individuals can easily get to the point of sensory overload at the Congress.

As beautiful as Congress is, it can be literally overwhelming at times. This is why the chaos mentors began offering a quiet room a couple of years ago already. So far, they have done so rather unofficially. The awareness team and the CERT were informed about the option and could contact Sam in case of need.

As we did notice a demand, we now want to extend this offer. We’ll strengthen the communication and coordination between the three teams and offer more options to take a time out. Sam Becker remains the direct point of contact for the awareness team and the CERT for all requirements of people from the autistic spectrum.

In her own words:

Hello my dear community,

in line with this year’s motto “tuwat” we’ll expand and officialise our offer for autists this year. Me and my partner Linny will again be on site for the whole Congress. We will be reachable on most channels (DECT, Twitter, etc). If you have questions, problems, or wishes, please contact us directly or reach out to the awareness team. We’ll do our best to support you as best and as quick as we can. The awareness team is available 24/4.

I am also available via Twitter before 34C3, particularly for those of you who attend for the first time – in case you have questions how you should prepare for 34C3.

Here are a couple of tips up-front:

In case you want to contribute to the Congress as an angel, we can help you find adequate quiet shifts without noise and fuss.

To prevent sensory overload, you can bring sunglasses and ear protection – an absolute “must” at the Congress.

Take regular time-outs and plan and adhere to fixed pauses. Get some fresh air and find a quiet spot – they do exists indeed!

If you get anywhere near an overload or meltdown, come to the quiet room or contact me or the awareness team.

You can reach the awareness team 24/4 at DECT 113.

Contact details of Sam Becker:

Contact details of Linny, her partner:
BUILD-UP

Dear Angels,

Below are some important details for the 34C3 Buildup.
Please read them carefully.

Buildup Angel

Similar to the 34C3 it self, buildup and teardown only work thanks to the heroic effort and participation of countless volunteers. Warm thanks to everyone who helps to bring Congress to Leipzig, we very much appreciate every bit of help.
Even though buildup nominally starts on the 16.12. true parallelization does not take hold until the 18.12.. Before that we need some time to boot and warm up ourselves. For this reason our suggestion (especially to non-local volunteers) is to have a relaxed weekend partying in leipzig or get some (probably much needed) sleep in advance, there will be more than enough work to do from the 18. to 26..

Times for the buildup:
8:00 to 24:00

Closed footwear (preferably hard-toed / German “S1 Sicherheitsschuh”)

Working gloves. (You don’t _need_ to bring them, but they’re nice to have)

Warm clothing. Empty exhibition halls tend to be cold.

NOTE: We will not be able to provide you with a ticket and/or sleeping place. It is also not possible to sleep in the exhibition hall.

Assemblybuildup

If you plan to bring, or construct big things for your assembly, please be aware that this needs to happen before the 26th and that you have to have to run it past the assembly team. The usual Assembly buildup will start on Dec. 26th. If possible please arrange deliveries for the 26th onwards only. More information on Assembly buildup will follow in a separate post soon.

We’re looking forward to have an awesome 34C3 with you.

Your Logistic Team
