Call for Subtitles

As you might know, during 32c3 the Subtitles Angels created real-time subtitles for all the talks which took place in Hall 1 and 2. These allowed hearing impaired visitors to follow the talks, and also provided assistance to the non-native German or English speakers.

As the last recordings are being released, the task of creating subtitles for all recording has started. For this we need your help!

If you have the capacity to create subtitles for a talk (perhaps one you wanted to watch in detail anyway), could translate a transcript or would like to do quality control, please check out subtitles.media.ccc.de and join #subtitles on hackint.

Being new to subtitling CCC talks is not a problem at all. Getting started is easy. And if transcribing is not for you, you can always work on the translations and quality control.

If you are willing to help, please take a minute to read through the new work-flow and style guide.
Please also read through these if you have previous experience subtitling CCC talks, because we have redesigned the entire interface to include Amara.

The finished subtitles will be released into the CDN and announced via Twitter at @c3srt_releases.

P.S. Remember the audio problems during the opening event? Subtitles were available all the way through. :-)
And by the way, subtitles also allow machine-indexing of the recordings. That means things like searchable archives become possible.

Saal 6.

But that’s not all. In order pull this off, we need help. Never tried ?

Dear Congress visitors and those who didn’t make it: Like in the previous years, the Video Operation Center will provide you with live streams and recordings of all main lecture halls (1, 2, G and 6) and the stage at Sendezentrum. As usual, you’ll find the video and audio streams at https://streaming.media.ccc.de and the recordings at https://media.ccc.de/c/32c3.
We also publish to our YouTube Channel “media.ccc.de” to cater to those with broken playback devices. We’ll continually be publishing the recordings there during Congress. Please avoid linking other channels which re-upload our work (with ads).

<a href="../../../../wp-content/uploads/2015/12/31c3-voc-jj-0773.jpg

Again, we’re happy to be able to bring you additional content: Audio from the “Podcaster-Tisch” (Podcasting-Table) of the Sendezentrum as well as music from the Chaos-West Assembly, the Lounge, the Anti-Error-Lounge and from the Dome on the roof of the CCH.

Like at the previous Congress and this year’s Camp, all videos will be produced and published in HD and we try hard to ensure the best image quality and correct metadata on the files. Thus, we ask you not to record the streams (or at least not to publish such recordings), as those do not live up to the standards we set for our recordings. For the time between a talk and when we publish the recording, you can use the Relive system. We wrote more on the topic of stream dumps in this blog post.

We also did some upgrades with the live subtitles. They should now work on more devices and also when watching the video stream in fullscreen mode. The subtitles team will focus this time exclusively on halls 1 and 2 and wants to cover those 100%. In both halls the live subtitles can be watched on two screens in the front rows as well as on an arbitrary device via a web frontend. For this Angels are still wanted, both for live transcription and as responsible contact person for a hall.

Even for regular visitors the CCH building with all it’s corridors, foyers, and halls can be a hard to navigate maze. Thankfully some hacker was too lazy to think about how to get someplace and thus built the first congress indoor navigation system.

Check it out at https://c3nav.de/.

In order for your favourite places to be found c3nav needs your help. Go to the project’s github page and create a pull request with your favorite place’s position. Or drop them a tweet to get in touch. And then you can create a QR code encoding that position, hang it up and every visitor can find out exactly where she is by just scanning that QR code.

If you own an Android device you can also install the c3nav app from F-Droid and Google Play or as .apk and use wireless location instead of scanning QR codes to enter your current position. The app also supports sharing of routes and positions, which is really great if you want to help someone finding you. Just send them a c3nav link with your current position. You can also add your favourite places as a quick link to your homescreen, so you can find your way to them with a single touch.

Well, isn’t that pretty cool? Unfortunately it seems like iOS doesn’t offer a wireless scan API, so some hacker has to take a look at that.

    „Democracy“

In the course of the 32C3 a cinema nearby is going to show the documentary film „

Democracy – Im Rausch der Daten“ (mp4) on December, 29th. The Cinema is in a walking distance of about fifteen minutes away from the CCH, near the University of Hamburg. There is no need to worry about the German title, the audio will mostly be mixed between English, German and other European languages and there will be English subtitles.
Following the screening there will be a Q&A-Session with Ralf Bendrath, one of the protagonists in the film and a staff member of Jan Philipp Albrecht, Member of the European Parliament.

The film captures the work of the chief negotiator Jan Philipp Albrecht, MEP, and Viviane Reding, MEP, as well as other stakeholders and participants during their work in the conference hall, on the corridors and in debates with many lobbyists in Brussels. Who makes the laws in Brussels and how? Who tries to ensure which kind of interests? Director David Bernet gives an inside view into the political process about the new data protection law in the EU, a topic which concerns us all.

Cinema:
To get the reduced 7,50 EUR price, show your 32C3 ribbon at the cinema’s cash desk.
We’ll also give a few free tickets to 32C3 visitors, favored pupils, students, etc. at the gathering point at the CCH.

Tickets can be bought directly at the cinema’s cash desk from now on or online.
Ticket reservation via telephone (Englisch and German): +49 40 41 320 320, Mo-Fr starting at 15.30 until nearly 22.00, Sa+Su starting at 13.30. Because of the queue at the cash desk, better be there 30 minutes before the film starts.

Visiting the 32C3 and wondering what the city has to offer? Try one of our tours! Our goal is to show Hamburg to the visitors of the 32C3 like no other tour guide would. We’ve selected fascinating tours showing the behind the scenes of our most fascinating technology related sites.

Save a seat for a tour on our webpage.

Here’s a list of our tours (English and German):

DESY

If you’ve ever wanted to stand next to a particle accelerator, DESY is the place for you. One of Europe’s leading accelerator research centers, our tour will give you an idea of how particle physics and a host of other sciences are advancing with the help of scientists from all around the world. No special physics background necessary!

U-434

After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, more than 150 submarines have been decommissioned, the most in 1995. Only very rarely are they handed over by the Russian government, in consultation with the intelligence, into museum operations. As a spy submarine U-434 (Russian B-515) was used for special purpose secret spy missions off the east coast of the US and long patrols in the territorial waters of the Soviet Union.

MS Stubnitz

The MS Stubnitz is a large ex-fishing Vessel, made in the GDR and commissioned in 1964. She is one of the last examples of the shipbuilding-skills of the socialist countries and she remains mostly in her original configuration. She has been used for Fleet-fishing of herring.

During that times she was able to deep-freeze 60 tons of fish per day and to store nearly 2000m³ of deepfrozen fish. After the fall of the Wall, the MS Stubnitz was transformed into a cultural arche. The Cargoholds got emptied of fish-production machinery and were transformed into concert venues with an impressive soundsystem. The electromechanical main-engine, the bridge, the ship hospital, the enormous DC-system to freeze tons of fish and the radioroom remain unchanged and are still in original and working condition.

Get an in-depth view of the internal wiring, decoders, computers etc. Explore the details of the ‚intelligent‘ car system and the process behind it. During the tour one of the guides will give you details on concepts, model building, construction and technology. You are encouraged to take photographs any time!

See you soon!

Ports will open at 20.00 UTC (21.00 local time) on December 27th and expect your ropchains for 48 hours straight. The competition will be in Jeopardy style and does not need any setup on your side.

This years winner will be qualified for the DEFCON CTF 2016 going down in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. If you’re playing on-site, be sure to pay us a visit! For any questions, best join our IRC channel, #32c3ctf on hackint.

As of Saturday morning, the 32c3 ticket presale is sold out. We are overwhelmed by the enormous number of people who want to join us in Hamburg, but unfortunately the venue’s capacity is limited. Therefore, there will not be another batch of tickets for presale.

" alt="congress" height="243" />

Are you able to speak English (and ideally also German) fluently in front of a large crowd?
Be prepared – for the time being, you might be the face of the Congress!

We are in the process of building our team of Heralds in preparation for 32C3 and we decided to change things a bit for this year’s Congress!

What are Heralds? Heralds vocalize general announcements to the audience, manage the Q&A after the talks and – most importantly – introduce the speakers to the crowd. Starting this year, we want Heralds to be able to focus solely on the speaker and the topic of the talk at hand.

We want you to be the best Heralds possible, so from now on, Heralds will not only be responsible for all the talks within a four hour time slot, you are also given the possibility to sign up early (read: now!), enabling you to prepare in advance of the Congress. We hope this will put Heralds less „on the spot“ and provide an even better Congress experience for everyone involved.

Mail us!

If the preliminary Fahrplan piqued your interest and you feel up to the job, please mail us, noting the talks you are interested in, ideally with a short introduction and why you feel best suited for the talks you chose, at 32c3-herald(at)cccv.de.

Please do so until December, 16th, 2015!

More information about Heralds can be found in the wiki.
