Day 2
Measuring cosmic distances with the cosmic distance ladder: a tutorial
Assembly-Event
Nowadays we know the distance to the moon, the other planets in our solar system, the sun, nearby stars, far-away stars and other galaxies. But how?

Instead, we know these distances by a wondrous interplay of theory and observations known as the cosmic distance ladder, where earlier rungs in the ladder unlock later rungs.

No prerequisites needed. You can try some of the discussed ideas at home. We will also touch on an error committed by the ancient greeks -- which was repeated in the 20th century, until Henrietta Swan Leavitt saved the day.
