"Free" and "freedom" are ubiquitous words, thrown around, often devoid of meaning. While superficially positive, it's gotten to a point where the words raise suspicion: if something claims to be "free" there must be a hidden cost, and if someone touts freedom politically it might as well be the far right. In software culture, "free" is often distinguished explicitly between "beer" and "speech", yet the ongoing demise from free software to open source to the current open source crisis points to a disintegration of meaning of these words.
