What does it mean to be a woman? This question lies at the core of contemporary "gender critical" anti-trans rhetoric. This event tackles the question head-on by exploring the politics, theory, and transformative potential of trans lesbianism. Featuring Nephthys, Joyce Rivière, and Luce deLire, the discussion will delve into original work addressing the intersections of trans identities, lesbianism and trans lesbianism.
Starting with Monique Wittig’s seminal work in "The straight mind," Luce deLire will present a theory of the "transsexual contract", arguing that women in general have always been trans and that trans lesbianism acan be read as an escape from the exploitative reproduction and protectionist politics. Nephthys will argue that t4t lesbianism offers a powerful confrontation to internalized transphobia of all people, prefiguring social relations beyond cisgender hegemony. Adding to this, Joyce Rivière will argue that TERFism is essentially a heterosexual ideology. With the help of Beth Elliot's trans lesbian autobiography "Mirrors" and Dorothy Allison's "Skin", Rivière argues that TERFs echo the feminist struggles around butch/femme dynamics of previous decades.
Why it matters: As transphobic discourses increasingly weaponizes questions of gender and sexuality, this event offers a critical intervention. It decentered the cis gender gazem. It reframes trans lesbianism not as a question of legitimacy, but as a transformative force for social and relational change. Language: English Join us for this vital and timely discussion.
