As a preparation, it would be best if you could install a suitable program beforehand. GIMP works okay, but my recommendation is [Aseprite https://www.aseprite.org/], which is specialized on pixel art. Sadly, it's no longer free software since September, but you'll still find the GPL versions in your software repositories.
