Wer einmal beim Congress war, weiß: Es gibt eine Welt da draußen und eine drinnen. Wir versuchen, auch mit wachsender Größe der Veranstaltung und immer mehr teilnehmenden Kindern und Jugendlichen eine Atmosphäre zu schaffen, die geprägt ist von Toleranz, Neugier, Spaß, Gesprächsbereitschaft, Freundlichkeit und einem besonderen Miteinander. Der Congress ist schon immer mehr Mitmach- als Konsumenten-Veranstaltung. Ein Event von Freiwilligen für Freiwillige, der nur so funktioniert, weil die allermeisten Teilnehmenden genau das auch wollen. Be excellent to each other! ist für uns deshalb nicht nur ein Spruch, sondern wesentlicher Kerngedanke des Events.

Seit 34 Jahren versuchen wir, den Congress in diesem Sinne zu organisieren und dabei aus Fehlern zu lernen. Es sind neue Initiativen und Teams – wie immer von Freiwilligen – entstanden und jedes Jahr viele Details umgestaltet worden. Wir sind weiterhin offen für Vorschläge zur Verbesserung. Kontaktiere gern das Orga-Team, wenn Du dazu Ideen hast.

Der Chaos Computer Club ist nach seiner Satzung und nach dem Willen der Mitglieder eine galaktische Gemeinschaft für alle Lebensformen. Wir wollen keine Diskriminierung, keine Intoleranz und damit auch keine Rassisten oder Sexisten. Wer sich diesen Prinzipien nicht verpflichtet fühlt, hat bei uns nichts zu suchen. Dies kann jeder auch schriftlich nachlesen. Wir bauen unseren kommerzfreien, offenen, und ja!, altruistischen Denkraum zum Mitmachen und zum Forschen an den Abgründen der Technik nicht dafür, um ihn mit rassistischen oder gewaltgeneigten Hohlbirnen zu teilen.

Trotzdem können bei einer so großen Veranstaltung nicht alle Probleme vermieden werden. Dafür stehen drei Teams rund um die Uhr zur Verfügung, jederzeit erreichbar per Telefon und natürlich persönlich vor Ort. Insbesondere für Erkrankungen und persönliche Krisen haben wir dafür seit Jahren auch ein großes Team professioneller Helfer. Auch für den Umgang mit Teilnehmenden, die sich an unsere Grundgedanken und ein kooperatives und freundliches Miteinander nicht halten, stehen Teams bereit. Genau wie bei der Mitarbeit bei Aufbau, Begleitung und Abbau des Congress setzen wir aber zugleich auf all die Freiwilligen, um Sicherheit, Gewaltlosigkeit und eine rundum entspannte Atmosphäre zu schaffen.

Die Teams und deren Aufgaben wollen wir in den kommenden Wochen hier im Blog genauer vorstellen:

Das Awareness-Team ist Anlaufpunkt, um Erfahrungen und Erlebnisse zu verarbeiten, Konflikte zu lösen und eine sichere und angenehme Umgebung für unterrepräsentierte Gruppen zu schaffen.

Das Team Safety & Security widmet sich der Prävention von Konflikten und der Verhinderung von Eskalationen. Das Team kümmert sich um Menschen, die sich daneben benehmen und um andere Gefahren. In den meisten Fällen genügt ein nachdrücklicher Hinweis auf unsere Prinzipien. Falls nicht, kommt das Hausrecht zur Anwendung.

Das CERT (Chaos Emergency Response Team) besteht aus ausgebildeten Ärzten, Krankenhelfern, Feuerwehrleuten und Kriseninterventions-Spezialisten. Sie kümmern sich um alle Notfälle und Probleme, die eine professionelle Betreuung erfordern. Erkrankungen und Verletzungen aller Art sind beim CERT genauso gut aufgehoben wie die Durchsetzung von Brandschutz- und Fluchtweg-Regeln.

Anyone who ever experienced the distinct feeling of „wow!“ on the first Congress knows: There’s an outside world and then there’s Congress. Even though the event copes with challenges that come with growth, we think we’ve built a space that promotes tolerance, curiosity, fun, open-minded communication, friendliness and cooperation. Unlike traditional conferences, where visitors receive full service for paying an entrance fee, CCC events are run by volunteers. The whole event is organized by people who buy their own tickets and spend their holidays to make it happen. Visiting 34c3 means to participate rather than assuming everything is taken care of for you. This means that everybody attending the 34c3 shares the responsibility to keep the event safe, secure, and enjoyable to all. So Be excellent to each other! is not just a slogan, but the event’s very soul.

The Congress stands upon 34 years of liberal and tolerant tradition to enjoy technology and culture, regardless of people’s background. We are dedicated to keep this tradition going by continuous improvement. Over the past years we have learned a lot, developed new methods and initiatives – by volunteers, of course –, improved many details, and generally put a stronger emphasis on our guiding principles. If you have suggestions for further improvement, please do not hesitate to contact the organisation team.

The Chaos Computer Club is, both by its chapter and common consent, a galactic organization that welcomes all lifeforms. As such, we are dedicated to providing a safe, secure and enjoyable experience for everybody attending our events, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, origin, or physical appearance. Lifeforms who refuse to share this openness towards others are not welcome at our events. Sexism and racism contradict the preamble of the CCC statutes and our extended anti-discriminatory statement published in 2005.

We stand for freedom of expression, but will not condone any form of sexism, group-focused enmity, violence or harassment. The Chaos Computer Club and the organizers of the Chaos Communication Congress are committed to continue to fill our statutes and principles with life.

But even in our hacker’s utopia we can not prevent each and every problem – after all, there’s way over 10.000 of us coming together now. So, since the Congress is the sum of its participants, we count on all of you: If you witness a violation of our principles, please act responsibly and also call on those participants around you to help as well. If this turns out to not be sufficient, please contact the appropriate teams directly via phone or ask any Congress volunteer to do so. Volunteers are called „Angels“ at CCC events and can be recognized by their badges. They are literally hundreds, willing to help.

During a large event like the 34C3 many things can happen that require attention or intervention. Sickness, escalation of unpleasant interactions with misbehaving participants, fire hazards or personal crises are just a few of the problems where assistance needs to be provided by trained professionals. Just as in previous years, three dedicated teams of volunteers are available in person around the clock and reachable by phone to assist you in matters of safety and security. When you feel you cannot solve the problem at hand on your own or with the help of the people around you, let them know immediately. To familiarize everyone with our initiatives, teams and efforts to make the 34C3 a safe, secure and enjoyable and open event for all, we will introduce them in more detailed posts over the next couple of weeks:

The Awareness Team provides a point of contact for people to process experiences, resolve conflicts, and to create a safe and enjoyable atmosphere, especially for underrepresented groups.

The Safety and Security Team is dedicated to preventing any conflict or escalation thereof. It will be there in case of conflicts or people misbehaving substantially but also to prevent hazards. In most cases, a firm but friendly reminder of our principles is sufficient. Don’t be the exception that gets shown the door.

The CERT (Chaos Emergency Response Team) consists of trained doctors, medics, firefighters and crisis intervention specialists. It provides aid in all cases and emergencies that require professional attention. The CERT will be there for sickness and injuries of all kinds but also to make sure the fire prevention and escape paths codes are observed.

Daß die innere Sicherheit erst durch Komputereinsatz möglich wird, glauben die Mächtigen heute alle.

Daß Komputer nicht streiken, setzt sich als Erkenntnis langsam auch bei mittleren Unternehmen durch.

Daß durch Komputereinsatz das Telefon noch schöner wird, glaubt die Post heute mit ihrem Bildschirmtextsystem in “Feldversuchen” beweisen zu müssen.

Daß der “personal computer” nun in Deutschland dem videogesättigten BMW Fahrer angedreht werden soll, wird durch die nun einsetzenden Anzeigenkampagnen klar.

Daß sich mit Kleinkomputern trotzalledem sinnvolle Sachen machen lassen, die keine zentralisierten Großorganisationen erfordern, glauben wir.

Damit wir als Komputerfrieks nicht länger unkoordiniert vor uns hinwuseln, tun wir wat und treffen uns am 27.12.17 in Leipzig, Seehausener Allee 1 (TAZ-Hauptgebäude) ab 11:00 Uhr.

Those in power today believe that national security can only be achieved by the use of computers.

The realisation that computers cannot go on strike is beginning to dawn even on mid-sized companies.

The postal service now believes they need to prove through “field trials” that the telephone will be even nicer with their computer-based screen text systems.

The latest ad campaigns make it clear that the “personal computer” is now being foisted on video-saturated BMW drivers in Germany.

We believe that despite all this, useful things can be done with home computers without a need for large centralized organisations.

To keep us computer freaks from puttering about aimlessly any longer, we’re doin’ somethin’ and will meet in Leipzig, Seehausener Allee 1 (TAZ main building) at 11 o’clock on 27.12.17.

We’ll talk about: international networks – communications law – data-processing law (who owns my data?) – copyright – information and learning systems – databases – encryption – computer games – programming languages – process control – hardware – and whatever else.

The “tuwat.txt” call for action marks the beginning of the Chaos Computer Club’s history. It is as relevant as ever (“tuwat” means “do something”).

Es ist wieder soweit – der Chaos Communication Congress steht vor der Tür! Dieses Jahr zieht der Kongress nach Leipzig und es werden viele neue Leute zum ersten Mal den Congress besuchen. Darunter auch du? Dann wollen wir dich gerne willkommen heißen und dich dabei unterstützen, einen guten Start zu haben.

Für wen sind die Chaos Mentors da?

Du wolltest schon immer mal zum Chaos Communication Congress und hast dir dieses Jahr endlich den Entschluss gefasst. Du interessierst dich für Themen wie Datenschutz, Security, Hardware Hacking oder Netzpolitik, hast aber bisher wenig bis keine Anknüpfungspunkte zur Community? Du besuchst den Kongress, hast aber den Eindruck, dass du gar keine von diesen “Hackern” bist, und das Gefühl, nicht richtig her zu passen? Bist du eine Hackerin oder Mitglied einer unterrepräsentierten Gruppe und bist dir unsicher ob du dich wohl fühlen wirst? Hast du spezifische Bedürfnisse, die dir die Teilnahme erschweren?

Dann möchten wir dich auf dem Congress willkommen heißen und dir den Einstieg erleichtern.

Du bist hier genau richtig und wir möchten dir dabei helfen, einen spannenden und schönen Aufenthalt zu haben. Als „Chaospatenkind“ bekommst Du einen Paten oder eine Patin zugeordnet und eine Gruppe, die zu Dir passt. Die Paten sind im Vorfeld für Eure Fragen da, heißen Euch am ersten Tag willkommen und erkunden mit Euch das Gelände. Gemeinsam finden wir raus, wo es für Dich interessante Workshops und Talks gibt und sind für dich als Ansprechpersonen da. Auch im Vorfeld sind wir Ansprechpartnerinnen für Deine Fragen, Sorgen, Bedürfnisse oder Wünsche.

Wie geht das?

**Anmeldung bis zum 03. Dezember***

Melde Dich bis zum 03. Dezember bei uns an, indem Du eine Mail mit ein paar Infos über Dich an unsere E-Mail-Adresse chaosmentors at lists punkt ccc punkt de schreibst. Schreib uns aber bitte so früh wie möglich, da wir schon vor dem 03. Dezember anfangen, die Gruppen zu erstellen. Schreib uns ein bisschen was über dich, zum Beispiel was dich zum Kongress führt, wieso du dich an die ChaospatInnen wendest wofür du dich interessierst und ob du spezifische Bedürfnisse hast. So können wir für Dich einen passenden Paten oder eine passende Patin finden und eine Gruppe mit ähnlichen Interessen zusammenstellen. Dein Chaospate wird dich und deine Gruppe dann vor dem Kongress kontaktieren, damit ihr euch gegenseitig kennenlernen könnt. Auf dem Kongress selber seid ihr eine Bezugsgruppe und könnt gemeinsam den Kongress erkunden.

Warum machen wir das?

Wir selbst haben seit 1, 2, 10 oder 30 Jahren immer wieder eine großartige Zeit auf dem Congress. Wir wissen aber aus eigener Erfahrung, wie schwierig der erste Schritt sein kann. Gedanken wie “Eine große Hacker*innen-Konferenz, passe ich da überhaupt hin?” sind uns nicht fremd. Aber keine Sorge – ist der erste Schritt getan, warten tolle Menschen und die Gelegenheit, unheimlich viel zu lernen auf Dich. Aber Austausch ist keine Einbahnstraße: Auch die Community auf dem Congress kann vieles von euch lernen und lebt von der Diversität der Teilnehmenden. Deswegen wollen wir mit den ChaospatInnen auch solche ermutigen, die sich von alleine nicht getraut hätten.

Für Paten und Patinnen:

Natürlich suchen wir auch dieses Jahr wieder tatkräftige Unterstützung von netten, erfahrenen und zuverlässigen Paten und Patinnen. Wenn Du Lust hast, Dich einer Gruppe von Neulingen anzunehmen und sie zu betreuen, dann melde Dich bei uns per Mail an chaosmentors at lists punkt ccc Punkt de.
Erzähle uns etwas über Dich und womit Du Dich gut auskennst, damit wir passende Patenkinder für Dich suchen können. Vielen Dank schonmal für deine Unterstützung.

Auch für uns ist dieses Jahr vieles neu und wir müssen uns selbst noch zurechtfinden. Daher zwei Bitten: Meldet euch bis zum 03. Dezember an, Anmeldungen die danach eingehen, werden wir nicht berücksichtigen können. Außerdem: Bitte seht davon ab, spontan Leute an uns zu verweisen. Wir bieten keine Führungen an (Hartnäckige Fake News!) und das Programm ist für diejenigen gedacht, die sich im Vorfeld angemeldet haben. It’s that time again – the Chaos Communication Congress is coming! This year the congress moves to Leipzig and many new people will visit the Congress for the first time, perhaps even you? If so then we want to welcome you and help you get off to a good start.

Who are the Chaos Mentors for?

You’ve always wanted to go to the Chaos Communication Congress and are interested in topics such as privacy, security, hardware hacking or network policies, but have so far had little to no connection to the community? You visit the congress, but you have the impression that you are not one of these “hackers” and the feeling that you do not fit in the right way? Are you a hacker or member of an under-represented group and unsure if you will feel comfortable? Do you have specific needs that make your participation difficult?

Then we would like to welcome you to the Congress and make it easier for you to get started.

Feel welcome at the Chaos Communication Congress and at the Chaos mentors!

You are exactly right here and we would like to help you to have an exciting and beautiful stay. As a “Chaospatenkind” you get a godparent assigned and a group that suits you. The godparents are there in advance for your questions, welcome you on the first day and explore congress with you. Together we will find out where there are interesting workshops and talks for you and are there for you as contact point if you need us. In advance of Congress we also act as the contact person for your questions, concerns, needs or wishes.

How does it work?

You have until December 3rd to register, you can do this by sending an email with some information about yourself to chaosmentors at lists dot ccc dot de. But please contact us as soon as possible, as we will begin to create the groups before the 3rd of December. Tell us a bit about you, for example what leads you to the congress, why you turn to the chaos mentors, what you are interested in and if you have specific needs. So we can find a suitable sponsor for you, and put together a group with similar interests. Your chaos mentor will contact you and your group before the congress so you can get to know each other. At the congress you are a reference group and can explore the congress together.

Why are we doing this?

We ourselves have had a great time at the Congress for 1, 2, 10 or 30 years. But we know from our own experience how difficult the first step can be. Thoughts like “A big hacker conference, am I even watching this?” are not foreign to us. But do not worry – is the first step done, waiting for great people and the opportunity to learn a lot about you. But exchange is not a one-way street: even the community at the congress can learn a lot from you and lives from the diversity of the participants. That’s why we want to encourage those who did not dare by themselves with the chaospates.

For chaos mentors:

Of course, we are again looking for energetic support from nice, experienced and reliable mentors this year. If you feel like taking on a group of newbies and looking after them, then contact us by mail at chaosmentors at lists dot ccc dot de.

For us too, this year is a venue and we have to find our way around ourselves. Therefore two requests: Sign up until December 3rd, sadly any registrations that come after this date will not be taken into account. Also: Please refrain from spontaneously referring people to us. We do not offer guided tours (Persistent Fake News!) And the program is for those who have registered in advance. If you meet people who are looking for orientation and connection, then support them! tl;dr register your assembly asap

We’ll have a huge chunk of an exhibition hall for the Assemblies with nearly three times the space as there was in Hamburg. To transform a faceless and boring exhibition hall into a cosy, hacky, welcoming and inspirational place, we need you!

Over the last years the concept of Assemblies was constantly evolving and changing. With our move to Leipzig, there are new challenges and opportunities. In this huge space, Assemblies, people and groups will gather around different subjects, interests and competences. These will be represented by “Chaos Competence Centers.”

A Chaos Competence Center is a structure very much like a village at Chaos Communication Camps: The usual Chaos where Assemblies blend into each other and everyone cares.

Chaos Competence Centers can provide stages, workshop spaces, shared areas and cosy places to talk, discuss or chill, and much more – only your imagination is the limit! For a start, some bigger groups went ahead to form Chaos Competence Centers. They evolve around a subject, but are by no means limited to it:
“The Hive” will gather machines that fabricate anything out of digital bits and real materials; “Chaos West” will gather all objects that move over the floor, they even have a huge test track for your motorized couch; Freifunk will be bigger than ever – expect many more Chaos Competence Centers!

If your assembly covers similar topics and interests as one of the existing Chaos Competence Centers, please attach and join! Also, please feel free to create your own Chaos Competence Center and let gravity do its work to catch more assemblies, we’re curious!

Besides these Chaos Competence Centers, there will be a lot of space for your very own ideas and projects; have fun and let others participate in what you’re doing!

The exhibition hall is an empty field where we’d love to see areas growing, spaces and places for things and people – we want to see rooms spawning where you place furniture and tools, host workshops and even provide stages next to them. As long as you meet the technical regulations of the Messe Leipzig (PDF) you can bring and build literally everything in there. (tl;dr tech specs: Max. 30qm² continuous ceiling, everything “B1 flame resistant”, maximum height 4.5m, no two-story buildings with both floors accessible by people, if in doubt: ask!!)

Certainly we’ll provide some tables and chairs “as usual” for all Assemblies who don’t want or can’t build big infrastructures and focus more on meet-up and work together on projects.

Due to the fact that this year all the assemblies will be sharing one big hall, there will be some challenges: light and noise. So if you plan to bring very bright or very noisy stuff, please keep in mind that there will be a couple of thousand people in the same room with you!

Leave the floodlights and Disco PAs at home, think about low ambient light design or table-spot-lights for hardware-hacking and be creative about noise pollution – you might also try concepts such as “silent disco”, DECT, rad1o or FM transmitted talks/workshops. Be prepared not to run your loud machines while your neighbors wanna run a workshop or host a talk. Dampening noise and blocking light pollution can also be accomplished by creating walls – from fabric or other materials; be creative! Transforming this huge hall into a maze of cozy corners is our quest for this year’s congress!
