Join us to help improve OONI tools for measuring internet censorship!
Born in 2012, the Open Observatory of Network Interference (OONI) is a free software project measuring internet censorship around the world (https://ooni.org/). We build tools (OONI Probe) for measuring various forms of internet censorship, and we host one of the largest open datasets on internet censorship.
As part of this hack session, we'll provide a deep dive into the OONI-verse and present some of the various areas of current active development. Depending on what you are interested in hacking on, you can work on developing new network experiments (https://github.com/ooni/probe/issues?q=is%3Aopen+is%3Aissue+label%3A%22new+nettest%22), improving the data analysis techniques (https://github.com/ooni/data) or the apps (https://github.com/ooni/probe, https://github.com/ooni/explorer).
Depending on your skills and interests, we will propose a set of different tasks and start hacking on them.
If interested in working on some data analysis tasks, some of which also include a machine learning component, you will be given access to a Clickhouse database which includes extracted metadata ready to be queried. In preparation, you might want to take a look at the following resources: * https://ooni.org/support/interpreting-ooni-data/ * https://github.com/ooni/data * https://ooni.org/notebooks/tutorial-russia-data-analysis-case-study.html
The session will take place at BornHack.
