Use of open-source assistive technologies, such as social and emotional AI & terminology related to neurodivergent individuals can meet the needs of those with cognitive disabilities.

How can we push for disability-centred policy and ethial open-source coding as a way of stopping to perpetuate social exclusion? As a developer and social inclusion advocate, I developed an app to support the hearing and visually impaired people to access education and training. In this talk, I will build on this success to talk about accessibility technology, for example, how specific assistive technologies, such as social and emotional AI used for learning purposes and the use terminology related to neurodivergent individuals can meet the needs of those with cognitive disabilities or autism-related conditions. Recent research shows how autonomous systems may discriminate against individuals with facial differences or asymmetry, different gestures, gesticulation, speech impairment, or different communication patterns. It especially affects groups with disabilities, cognitive and sensory impairments, and autism spectrum disorders. I therefore intend to develop and also advocate for the use of inclusive technologies and their embedding in sociotechnical systemes.
