Story File (Blorb)

Story File (for older interpreters)

What is this?

In the 1970s and 1980s, a genre of computer games called "Interactive Fiction" was very popular. Many people today know them as "text adventures", worlds created in text form, where you wandered around, solving riddles and quests using short English sentences like "GET LAMP" or "GO NORTH". Reconnaissance at Finowfurt is a piece of interactive fiction that takes you on a journey to the Chaos Communication Camp.

Great! How can I play it?

Download the game from this site. It comes in a package format called "Blorb". To play a work like this one, you need an interpreter program: many are available, among them Zoom for Mac OS X and for Unix, and Windows Frotz for Windows. If you want to run the game on another platform (it is written for the classic Infocom Z-machine, making it playable on almost every computer or operating system in existence), try downloading the story file for older interpreters instead of the Blorb version and find a suitable interpreter.

I've never played a text adventure before. Is there some kind of introduction?

Glad you've asked. One of the best texts for absolute beginners to the genre of interactive fiction is the classic introduction at brasslantern.org.
