TL;DR: Just like in previous years, a team of translation angels will be on hand to whisper simultaneous interpretations of all talks at 34C3 in your ear, starting right on day one. All German talks will be translated to English, and all English talks to German. There is a second translation stream in all four locations that we will use for various target languages – catch the heralds’ announcements for details. To listen to the translations, you will need a device with either a web browser, a generic audio stream player (such as VLC), or a Mumble client (“work in progress”). We cannot provide any transmission technology that is independent from the Internet this year, but we are working to make the IP-based technologies more immediate and reliable than in previous years. Details:

With the continuing growth of the congress and the move to a new location, serving our translations via DECT is no longer feasible. We will have two distribution technologies this year – both new and hopefully accessible to everyone. Since this is the first year with the new system, there might still be some glitches, but we will do our best to make this transition as painless as possible.

  1. You can listen to the translations at https://streaming.media.ccc.de/34c3_translated, kindly provided by the VOC. This is specifically optimised for listening in the lecture hall, minimising latency compared to the normal stream. You can listen directly in the browser or import the link to your VLC player on any device. Instructions for this will be made available on https://streaming.c3lingo.org/. Note that latency might be a tad higher due to technical constraints.

  2. We are setting up a Mumble server. However this is “work in progress”. This server had very low latency in our tests. It can be found at mumble.c3lingo.org on the standard mumble port (64738). You can access this server on a mumble client of your choice, our recommended clients are listed at streaming.c3lingo.org. We have also set up a web client at https://mumble.c3lingo.org/ that allows you to use Mumble in your browser without specific Mumble software.
    The Mumble channels are ordered according to hall name. We have two channels in each hall. The first channel is for the translation to English or German, the second channel is the optional translation to another language. The heralds will announce whether and which other language will be offered. We have configured the channels so that you will only be able to listen, not talk.

We will update https://streaming.c3lingo.org/ with recent information and pointers, so this is a good place for you to check at the beginning of each talk. As always, our translations are also available when streaming the talks off-site (at streaming.media.ccc.de) and when viewing the talks later (at media.ccc.de).

TL;DR: Wie schon in den Jahren zuvor stehen unsere Übersetzungs-Engel bereit, die dir eine Simultanübersetzung aller Vorträge auf dem 34C3 ins Ohr flüstern. Alle deutschen Talks werden nach Englisch übersetzt und alle englischen Talks nach Deutsch. In allen Sälen gibt es einen zweiten Übersetzungs-Stream, den wir für verschiedene Zielsprachen benutzen – Details werden von den Heralden bekanntgegeben. Um die Übersetzungen zu hören, brauchst du ein Gerät mit einem Web-Browser, einem üblichen Audio-Stream-Player (etwa VLC) oder einen Mumble-Client („work in progress“). Wir können dieses Jahr keine Übertragungswege anbieten, die ohne das Internet auskommen, aber wir bemühen uns, die IP-basierten Übertragungswege mit geringerer Verzögerung und mehr Zuverlässigkeit als bisher zu betreiben. Der Congress wird immer größer, daher ist es nicht mehr möglich, unsere Übersetzungen via DECT anzubieten. Dieses Jahr haben wir zwei Übertragungswege – beide sind neu und hoffentlich passend für alle. Weil alles neu ist, kann es Kinderkrankheiten geben, aber wir bemühen uns, alles so schmerzlos wie möglich zu machen.

  1. Ihr könnt die Übersetzungen live auf https://streaming.media.ccc.de/34c3_translated anhören. Diese Seite wird freundlicherweise vom VOC bereitgestellt. Der Stream dort ist speziell dafür optimiert, ihn in den Sälen direkt zu hören, und hat weniger Latenz als der normale Stream. Ihr könnt direkt unter dem Link im Browser hören oder den Link im VLC-Player importieren (cross-platform). Eine kurze Anleitung, wie man den Stream in VLC öffnet, findet ihr unter https://streaming.c3lingo.org/. Trotz der Optimierungen könnte die Latenz hier etwas höher sein, daher haben wir noch eine zweite Option bereitgestellt, die in unseren Tests weniger Latenz hatte.

  2. Wir sind dabei, einen Mumble-Server aufzusetzen. Dies ist aber noch „work in progress”. Dieser hatte in unseren Tests sehr geringe Latenz. Den Mumble-Server antwortet auf mumble.c3lingo.org auf dem Standard-Mumble-Port (64738). Ihr könnt einen Mumble-Client eurer Wahl benutzen. Hinweise auf die Clients, die wir getestet haben, findet ihr auf streaming.c3lingo.org. Zusätzlich stellen wir auch einen Web-Client bereit auf https://mumble.c3lingo.org/ – damit könnt ihr direkt im Browser den Mumble-Streams folgen, ohne spezielle Mumble-Software.
    Die Kanäle sind nach den Saalnamen sortiert. Wir haben zwei Kanäle pro Saal. Kanal 1 ist für die Übersetzung nach Englisch oder Deutsch, der zweite ist für Übersetzungen in eine andere Sprache. Die Heralde werden vor den Vorträgen bekanntgeben, ob wir Übersetzungen in eine andere Sprache anbieten können, und welche das sein wird. Die Kanäle sind so konfiguriert, dass ihr nur zuhören, nicht sprechen könnt.
