The SIP Router Project aims to create a common framework for all projects related to SIP Express Router (aka SER). The projects that joined the initiative so far are: SIP Express Router (SER) – the initial project started in 2002 and Kamailio (OpenSER) – the project started as fork of SER in 2005.
SIP router is not a PBX like asterisk, its more like a IP router, but for for the SIP protocol. Its peformance and flexibility make it suitable for carrier grade networks, e.g. its used to provide the Voice over IP plattform of 1&1 (big german ISP) which several millions of customers.
