.berlin
Well, DNS is a hirarchical system. We have ".", we have ".de.", we have ".berlin.de.". This particular Berlin will never be anywhere else then in "de". Then why this crazy initiative? It simply breaks a system that was once nice and clean and gets more unclean (to an engeneers point of view. then again, it is a technical system) every day. --MarcusWolschon 08:11, 20 December 2007 (CET)
Marcus, the DNS system was never really nice or clear. When Jon Postel added .com/.net/.org/.edu and the ccTLDs (.de etc) to the root (that was starting from 1985) only a couple of people used the "Internet" at that time and Jon never imagined that a billion ordinary people will become users one day and would have the wish for a personal, cultural or ethnic identity on the net. At least when more new gTLDs have been added in 2000 and 2004 (.info, .biz, .mobi, .cat and others), the Jon Postel system was broken. If you have a look to the first regional TLD, the Catalan .cat, you will see how well this one is accepted by the community (people, academia, business, government etc.). Especially the ccTLD system is questionable: Even uninhabited islands or countries with 50.000 inhabitants have an own ccTLD identity (for instance the UK has 17 ccTLDs for all its terretories), but much bigger communities like California, the Scots or the Berliners don't have one. That there's a demand you can see on over 100,000 domains already containing "berlin" (zoo-berlin.de, create-berlin.de and whatwever). Marcus, I would be happy to continue the discussion with you.
