One of the most ubiquitous networks of our time is the telephone network. We use it daily and take it for granted that it works - but how is this achieved? How does modern telephone switching work and why are cereal consumers equipped with whistles not able to place free calls anymore?
Main objective of this lecture is to give you some basic insight into the Signaling System #7 protocol suite and to understand the fundamentals of state of the art telephone switching. Supplementary services like SMS and number portability is discussed as well as the smooth integration of ISDN.
